Mike, I did only because I saw them referenced by you in a thread a couple years ago.  Thank you.

Now, back to the build......

Half way home after my third attempt.

All the way home.  This time all rings slid in nicely.  Phew!

Dry installed MLS head gasket (.020) and kept oil passage o-rings even though the MLS had "bump outs" for the indentation in the cylinder.  If this is not correct, please let me know.  The stud nuts are not installed yet so I can lift the head and remove the o-rings if necessary.  And, the cam tensioner and guide will go in tomorrow before the head is torqued down.  Just had to see how it looked.

Looking good!!

The thing that is missed...and I don't mention with the 550 heads....is the improvements to the oiling slots to the cam. I take pride in those little touches.
Mike

Are you able to elaborate in regards to the 550 oiling slots for a newbie like myself? Or is that like asking the colonel for the KFC spice recipe?

The oiling slots cut into the cam saddles are very shallow. The 2 central ones actually have a raised ridge perpendicular to the channel. I deepen these and slightly extend them so they act as a oil reservoir. I also blend the feed hole into the channels. Nothing spectacular but it does make a difference in keeping the journals well lubed.

Almost had a postal moment.  I came across 2 of the 10 x 16mm dowel pins and immediately thought I left them out of the cases....until remembering 2 are needed in the top of the head.  For a minute there...

Pit Posse.  They are made for ATVs.  Great on #2 and #3.  Tight fit vertically on #1 and #4 before they bottom out on case.  If I had to do it again I would trim the bands to make them narrower.  The flange on top edge of the band really helps slide up the pistons.

Getting a sinking feeling I didn't properly capture the bottom end of the cam chain tensioner.  Can't get it to seat against back of case without firm pressure.  Head not torqued yet so will either try to get a peek through the pan or remove head, lift jugs and re-insert just to make sure. Better to do it now I guess.

OK, Don - what's the trick?  I installed the second stock front caliper.  I got the parts from Godffrey and used a dual banjo at the MC.  SS brake lines from Shaun at Slingshot.  Unless I let the air out of the front tire, I can't squeeze the wheel in between the calipers.  One odd thing is that the 2nd, new right side caliper hits the fork sooner than the left caliper when pivoted outward (and no, the bracket spring is not limiting pivot travel.  It wasn't installed when trying to fit the front wheel).  I haven't tried fitting the wheel first and then bolt on the 2nd caliper after.  I remember, Don, this issue gave you fits at first too.  Any suggestions?

In the interim, the other bikes are coming along nicely and being ridden.  Really only some carb issues, like re-jetting and new gaskets & o-rings.  That's my 550 in the lower right - lagging way behind.  I've gotta stop spending so much time on my buddies' bikes.

Wow.  Light speed reply.  Thanks, Don!

I ran out of shop time today to try the other option.  Bummer the wheel won't slip in and out.  I have a 100/90 front and thought a 90/90 might just make it.

Just told Slingshot it's a dual line with clipons going from MC to the calipers directly.  You can navigate your way around the web site and order there without having to call.

Well, spent some time this very hot evening installing the 2nd caliper after getting the front wheel back on.  Not bad, but it was a bit tedious tightening up the mounting bolts a 1/2 turn at a time.

As you can see, I powder coated the calipers black, polished the brackets and powder coated the disc retainers a pale gold.

The pads are aligned very well fore and aft, but slightly tilted on the discs vertically by about 1/32".  I'll try to deal with that later.  The shop's AC is on the fritz so at 10:30 p.m. it's still in the upper 80s after baking in the sun all day.  But, by the way, the Fat Tires were icey cold.

Here's a side shot of the new box swingarm and the brake stay.

Fork tubes and calipers binding.  Not a big deal.  On calipers its most likely the paint on the sides of the pads.  Just too hot today to deal with it.  So I did a quick mock up to keep me inspired.
