I think if it is not resting on top of the cam/valve train, then you should pull the oil pan and hope it dropped through to the bottom.

Dont run it till you find that nut!

Was on a ride a few years back and my buddies K5 shot the nut right threw the cap!

thanks guys! yes i certainly won't run it.
i'll take off the rocker cover and hope i can find it, if not then the oil pan. if i can't find it that way then it gets tricky...
it did not come out with the oil change i just did.

the engine still ran well on the last ride so my hope is that it's resting in some "safe" place but not knowing where it went i'm still worried what it may have done!

it's morning here, i'll need to go to work so this has to wait until evening unfortunately.

got the nut, luckily it didn't go far after all. it was wedged in between the spring and the case. you may be able to make it out in the picture

the valve retainer get nicked as you can also see in the picture. i checked the valve stem and it's straight, and in line with the others (verified with a ruler). then gave it a couple of good blows with a hammer and the retainer seems to be seated well and secure. i think i can run this.

the inside of the tappet cover also got knocked but that's nothing to worry about.

was a bit tight to get out but who can resist the combined efforts of a little allen wrench and a pair of needle nose pliers?

well this was a good occasion to re-torque the head nuts. then it all went back together.
this time i made extra sure to tighten the tappet nuts really well. don't want this to happen again.

some easy fixes of minor annoyances:

alternator cover - pushed some some non-hardening sealant into the holes where the logo plate clips in. since then it's stayed put.

ignition cover - hammered out the middle part a tiny bit so that the nut doesn't touch it any more.

didn't look for the source of the small oil leak under the left-side engine cover yet...

Clean the area good then sprinkle baby powder in the area of the leak to pinpoint where it is if you catch it before it has leaked a lot.

thanks RAF, that's what i'll do. i'm pretty sure it comes from under the cover, not the oil pan but we'll see. it's really more of a sweating than a leak, doesn't leave a single drop under the bike. first i'm off to the dyno on wednesday to get the carbs sorted...

just got off the dyno recently: there's a herd of 54 ponies kicking down the backwheel. and some interesting result on air filters.

more to follow with the graphs etc...

Congrats on the 54 rw hp figure.  Please summarize the motor mods to get there when you post your dyno graphs and filter results.
Thanks,
David

here's what i had last year, before engine mods:
  • 44.6 rw hp
  • 30.7 nm torque

graph is here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,134863.msg1522043.html#msg1522043
that's pretty good as honda claimed 50 hp at the crankshaft, and many sources quote 38 rw hp for a stock 550.

after the current engine mods:

  • 54.1 rw hp
  • 67.9 nm torque

that's an increase in horsepower of about 22% and torque of 121% (!) compared to last year.
spark plugs and airfilter had about 8000km on them when measuring, with fresh ones it may be a tiny bit better.

here's the final graph:

the bike pulls like a train right from the start and keeps reacting strongly to throttle input through a wide rpm range. the power distribution seems very usable. does not peak as high as it could with maximising high-end output but for use on the road, this seems very good - apart from the theory that's also how it feels :)

we also tried the uni filter NU-4055 that fits in the stock airbox, vs. the honda OEM paper filter (with 8k km on it, so not totally pristine):

at higher rpms the unifilter provides less airflow than oem, shown in the dropping air/fuel curve. this manifests itself in a lower power output. this seems contrary to what some people claim - but these numbers don't lie and i'll be sticking with the OEM paper filter.

we then experimented with taking off the cover (mine has that "snorkel"), off the airbox: also that did not improve anything, neither flow nor power.

RAF i need to go now but will post a summary of the mods.

finally, the man i need to thank most is mike rieck.
over lengthy email conversations he patiently listened to my needs and ideas and helped with excellent advice to come to this result! that of course is on top of the brilliant work on the head that he did himself.

Actually, the A/F mix looks a tad lean on those graphs, no? Perhaps a bit more fuel might perk you up even higher? I have been under the impression a target mix is between 13-14. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in with actual data instead of my anecdotal impression.
