I used to run coils under the carbs, and the chopper guys ran them under the carbs and in a box.
So you could run a coil box , and the other box.. I think brass strips and knobs on the side would look really good..

You know, now that I see it assembled a bit, I really like how the light wood grain stripes in the instrument backs goes with the copper color from the other parts, you've got a nice interplay of colors going on.

Absolutely. I love this part.

As for heat, the only component I'd be worried about is the Reg/Rec if you plan to install that in there.

Nah, that'll be out in the wind somewhere (dunno where yet). I will keep investigating the coils in the box idea though, I really like it. Will probably depend mostly on room given I hadn't planned to have them in there.

I'm really stoked you stuck around to build this bike and share it. Especially given all the BS you endured when first undertaking your project. Oddly, those same yokels haven't been by to commend your project or admit how they're words tasted going down.

Thanks mate, I appreciate that (and you other fellows who are being supportive). I have noticed certain folks are conspicuous by their absence. Still, a long way to go yet though, haven't "saved this poor bike from being destroyed" just yet...  ;)

Andrew, leaving aside the subjective opinions of whether the CB750 "deserves" this sort of treatment or not, I find your design aesthetics, artisan skills and innovative approaches both admirable and inspirational.
The last 33 pages of this build have been some of the most enjoyable I have come across on this forum and l look forward to the ongoing build leading up to the final product.

Personally, I don't think any mass produced, multi-flawed (by today's technical and engineering standards) 40+ year old motorcycle is all that sacred.

Having said that, I am also respectful of the people that pull off great restos, but at this point, give me a well done cafe'd or brat'd or chopper'd or trike'd or steampunk'd effort any day.

This is one of those threads that I love coming back to.  I'll echo cal's words that I'm pleased you stuck with it.
I love restorations and see them the beauty in them but I also love custom work on bikes and see the beauty in them as well.

Regardless of a person's taste, it isn't difficult to recognize when someone has talent and your pores are oozing with it.  Great attention to detail and it continues to show on the finished pieces.  Looking forward to seeing this bike out on the road someday.  Keep on keeping on!

Totally agree! Thanks Noddy for the inspiration and looking forward to seeing how this bike turns out and then to see it on the road.

Good luck!

Absolutely. There's plenty of room for both.

So, figured it was probably worth busting out the good camera for the final (well, for now) product:

Pretty happy with my little wood-working job! Next on the list is trying to get that oil tank all soldered up, I have a feeling that won't go quite as smoothly...

Some wood working finishes will not hold up long to uv exposure or will yellow or will simply flake away or degrade quickly.  Keep that in mind.

Ever thought about using stained glass adhesive copper tape on any of the parts.
A stained glass cover for one of FrankenFrankenstuff's points covers could be interesting with the right pattern.
Not sure how it would look but it could be interesting with points at night.

Yep, it'll eventually be varnished, same as the gauge backs:

About 14 coats (from memory) of Marine Spar varnish, so should be good for a bit of outside work.

I didn't know about that copper tape... not sure where I'd use it, but good to keep in mind, ta! Oh, and I've got a pamco ignition lined up, so no points.

Marine Spar Varnish is built for outdoor use so it is UV stable and fairly long lasting.

Nice wood work.  It reminds me a little of the Hacker Craft and StanCraft wooden boats.

Glad to see some activity in this thread again. :)

I love those old wooden coil boxes!

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Nothing like the adage, Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

American sentiment of no replacement for displacement.  If it is good with 150hp then it ought to be great with 200-300-400 or more...

How does it go? If some is good, more is better, and too much is just enough.

Nice work Andrew, keep it coming.

Well, the can says 6-10 coats, and I really don't want to have to re-coat it anytime soon, plus it's not that hard to whack a few extra coats on to be sure... so, you know, why not!

I'm assuming by the RAF part, you're of British background? 122 Squadron?
