Yikes.  Good luck going under the knife and with the recovery.  I have a couple of herniated discs that I have to go easy on.  Thankfully, no surgery required.

Do you have an estimated time of recovery?


I can (for the most part) control the pain with the cortisone shots.  It is the numbness in my left arm and especially my left thumb, index, and middle finger that requires the surgery.  We are afraid that if I don't take care of it now it will become permanent.  I will be given 42 days of convalescent leave which is going to drive me crazy.  I was given 30 days when I had my knee surgery and I went back to work after 18 days because I couldn't sit around the house any more and that was when I was working on the USS Bush.

That blows.  They tested me for nerve damage buy sticking needles into my skin and running current.  After being poked with needles and zapped for about 90 minutes I was about to crawl the walls.  My knee kick reflex was shot.  Thankfully, I was able to avoid surgery, but if I stand for a half or more of a day, my back starts aching.

I can ride a suberbike with clip ons, and my back is fine. My wrists are numb but my back is fine.

I wish, but I have a feeling I won't be up to or able to do a whole lot.  They go through the front of the neck and move all the parts out of the way to get to the spine.

Riding a sport bike helps the compression issue I have in my lower back since it provides a nice stretch.


Regardless of the surgery I need to get moving on this thing.  I would like to get the engine painted and rebuilt within the next couple of weeks.  However work is killing me right now.  Up at 0430 and I don't get home until 2000.  Hopefully this weekend I can get the cylinders honed and get the head to a machine shop to remove some material for the new slipper cam chain tensioner.  I need to find a place to bead blast the engine.  The buddy that let me use his blast cabinet when I did the 750 moved.

Do olio I want the cases soda, glass or "sand" blasted? I have a cabinet with glass or aluminum oxide that is available. Unless you are doing a complete teardown and willing to fully clean afterwards, I'd avoid the media and stick with soda. I do have someone local to me that does soda blast. Am happy to help coordinate (pick up and deliver if helpful) get that done for you.

If you are happy with glass beading, I'll do that for you with pleasure. Just let me know. I'll pop down and grab the cases, blast them, and turn them back to you Saturday or Sunday. No sweat-

WOW that is an incredible offer.   Thank you very much.  I bead blasted the cases on the 750 and had no issues.  I just spent a lot of time cleaning them afterwords to make sure I removed any traces of the blast media.  Right now I haven't had time to finish splitting the cases.  Plus I ma going to see if my powder coater (he is a friend of mine in the Navy) will let me borrow his booth. 

One way or the other I will let you know.

I herniated a disk at the bottom (L1/L2) to the point where a piece broke off and was pressing on a nerve.

I woke up one morning limping because I had lost most of the strength in my left leg. Fortunately for me a cortisone shot and  months of PT dealt with it and I was able to avoid surgery.

I snuck out of work a little early tonight and was able to get the cases split.  Now just the simple task of removing the crank shaft and transmission.  Everything looks pretty clean inside so I am happy about that.

Crap...I think I lost one of the knock pins that goes between the top half of the case and the jugs.  I was cleaning and degreasing the case halves this morning and when I went to put them away I noticed one of the pins was no longer there.  I didn't have time to search for it before I had to leave for work.  So now my brain will be going crazy all day thinking about it.  On the bright side...I got the case halves cleaned up and pretty much ready for bead blasting.

I couldn't handle not knowing where the knock pin was so I went home for lunch/dinner and found the darn thing.  My mind is much more at ease.  I also went through the oil seal and gasket kits I bought and found a total of 18 o-rings or seals that aren't in the kits.  So I will be stopping by the dealership tomorrow and get them ordered.

Well this is what two hours worth of sanding and polishing will get you.  I started out with 400 then moved to 1000, then 1500, then 2000 wet sanding.  After that was done I moved to the buffing wheel.  Started out with black course media then moved to brown, then to green.  They aren't perfect, but I think they will work nicely.  Not sure if I should try and repaint the black background behind HONDA.

I forgot to take a pic of the small piece before I started working on it, but it had the same patina as the piece next to it.



All done.

I am going to paint it just like I did the 750.  I used VHT paint.  I painted the cases silver, but the head and jugs were black and I polished the fins.

I have to send out a huge thank you to calj737.  He drove to my house (~2 hours) and picked up my parts, drove back to his place and bead blasted them, then returned with them the next day and wouldn't take anything for his time or fuel.  Thanks brother I owe you big time.

All that is left for me to do is to clean them up to get rid of any media.  I plan on stoning the mating surface just like Jphoenix did on his SL350 build.








The combustion chamber was absolutely coated in carbon build up...not anymore!

I had an ulterior motive: to see his 750! Plus, the very best craft-made donuts are about 20' from his place, so I got a chance to take my 8 yr old daughter along for some Daddy time and donuts  :) The smile on her face was well worth the trip.

OK...I will get the wife on it.  She has a much steadier hand than I do.  Any recommendations on what paint to use for this?

Stopped by the place that installed my granite counter tops a few years back and picked up a remnant (for free) so I could sand/polish the head and jugs mating surfaces.  It is 10" long, 4" wide and 1.25" thick.  I plan on starting with 2000 grit wet dry paper and see how that goes.  I should hopefully get a nice, smooth, and flat surface.

Spent all day cleaning the engine parts to get rid of any left over glass bead media.  I ran a tap through all of the threaded holes in the case to clean them out thoroughly.  I also drilled out the rivets that hold in the windage tray so I could thoroughly clean under it.

I spent some time lapping the valves.  The seat on the valves looks good, but not the ones on the head.  I will do a leak check after I get the head milled to accept the new cam chain slipper.  I stopped by a machine shop this morning that is just down the road from me to see if they would do it and how much.  The guy was supposed to call me back, but as of right now I have not received a call.

I took apart the starter to clean it out and check the brushes and what not.  There was A LOT of dust inside, but everything looks to be in good working order.

I also spent some time working on the mating surfaces.  It is amazing what is brought to life when you remove a little bit of material.  There are all kinds of little casting flaws.  I guess I have some more work ahead of me to try and get a few of the scratches out.
