Awesome, Charlie!  I understand the desire to ride.  I'm finally just now getting ready to go work on the 500.  I rode Stella to work today.  Then decided to swing by a different way home.  Then rode it to go get a massage because my shoulder was tight.

Well the weather was so perfect, I decided not to stop at the house and just keep going.  Found a few little small 2-lane roads about 15 miles from the house and enjoyed those.  By the time I got home, I had put about 80 miles on her today and it seemed like about 5.

Really proud for you on the bike; she looks great.  Well, truth be told, I'm not a fan of the seat but the bike itself is a thing of beauty.

Racer Fan,

You're the first one to comment on the Krauser Mounts.  Hope Stev-o doesn't get disgusted with the whole effect and unsubscribe.  :)  :)    (And I still need to clean up the Krausers.  They would be more of an eye-sore than the Second Ugliest seat and the Vetter combined.  ROFL  :)  :)

Ron,

Thanks!!!!!!  Now that I have  a running bike, I do plan to ride it more than just 15 miles at a clip.  :)  :)
And the seat thing.  Back in the day, I got to sit on a couple of friends bikes that had them.  Most were Corbins.  And they were VERY Comfortable.  Especially if you were doing a few hundred miles a day, essentially just stopping to get gas, take a whiz and get going again.  They may not be pretty (to some, cough, cough) but they do make long days in the saddle more comfortable on the butt.  And now that I'm older, and have lost most of mine, I need to gain some advantage.  LOL  But, I'm still not sure that this seat is going to stay yet.  (Still have to finish recovering the original seat.)

And, tell me more about this here "massage" thing?????  That could be another reason to come visit you.  :)  :)

Mark,

I prefer mine with some Gentleman Jack!!!!!  :)  :)  When I got my first bike, a CL450 modified to look like a CB450 I was stationed in Biloxi MS.  After my first springtime ride (around March if memory serves me), and getting hit in the Adam's Apple, more than once, I decided it was a whole lot more fun watching them splatter themselves on a fairing.  Then I could wash them off while sipping the Good Stuff!   :)  :)

I keep telling you boys we live the good life here in the ATL!  8)

I found a couple of really good Asian massage places here a few years ago.  After throwing batting practice for an entire afternoon one day, I woke up the next day with my arm almost unable to move.  It was then that I came to understand that when you get into your 40's (and especially your late 40's), while you may be to do a lot of the things you could do when you were younger, it will now be a lot more painful to recover and it will take longer.

I discovered then the magic of these Asian masseuses (sp?).  When they massage your back and then walk on it, those sore muscles just melt away!  :D

Ron,

Amen to that.  Longtime ago in place far, far away, there was this pretty little dark haired gal that maybe weighed all of 90 lbs soakin wet.  When she walked on my back, she hit all the right spots.  For all I cared she could have been doing a Spanish toe dance.  :)  :)  :)  So, I know what you mean.  And by the time you walked out of there, you were ready for almost anything!

I like her a lot. Congratulations.

If it works good, it looks good  ;D

Stev-o,

OK!!!!!!!  Thanks!!!!!!
Got the carbs sync'd up so they are all fluttering between 11 - 12 inches of mercury.  It actually was kind of fun.  :)
Finished putting some other stuff together.  And getting a few things cleaned up, like the side covers and tank.
Used some McGuires (sp) on them and it turned out fairly nice.

Put in about 2.5 - 3 gallons of gas from the can full I bought last week.

Then after rechecking everything, I decided to take her for her first ride.  Figured I'd take her to the Post Office and send the first battery back to Battery Stuff.  Got there and much to my chagrin, PO closed.  It's apparently Columbus Day.  Ugh.  So from there I decided to go see if a buddy of mine was home.  Got there, and he wasn't there.  His wife said he was picking up their grandchildren and then taking his daughters car to the dealer for service work.  Oh Well.  Went home kind of the back way.  Got down one particular street and they were fixing some little bridge so had to take a detour.   Only about a half mile.  Ugh.  But some streets I'd never been down before.  All in all, a nice 15 mile ride.

Now the not so good news.  Forks were VERY, VERY STIFF!!!!  Going to change the 30 wt fork oil out for some lighter weight fork oil.  Probably 10 wt BelRay and see how it feels with that.

After about 5-6 miles, it was a little hard finding neutral.  Also, the Neutral light stopped working.  Ugh.

The Turn Signal buzzer has to go.  Drove me nuts.  That or I need to mute the damn thing.  LOL

Also need to get used to shifting again.  My start up from a standstill needs a bit of work!!!!  :)  :)  After that, I was fairly decent and not slipping the clutch too badly.  But I suspect I may have heated it up from the initial few miles.

It always found the gear I was shifting into.  Never any missing a gear and no popouts.  So I'm happy with that.

Also, the Front brake was squealing like a pig!!!!!!  Got to check on that as well.  I did taper the leading and trailing edges, but they are the EBC pads.  Would not mind changing them to something else though.

So that was my day today.

Here are a few pictures when I got back.  Yes, the second ugliest seat was on her.  But it did feel pretty good.

I hear you. I sold my Honda in Europe in 1997 and got back on the road in USA in 2011, first few hundred miles I was grinning every time I set on her.

Had Krausers too:

Prokop,

Very Cool.  The Krausers do make carrying stuff a whole lot easier.  :)  :)
Before the 28+ year nap, I used to carry my laptop, and paperwork needed at different sites in them without ever worrying about things getting broken, damaged, wet, etc.  Also could carry my suit jacket, office shoes, etc.

Rafi,

Thanks!!! It's not an Ed World bike but she's mine and she's running really nice.

Just went out to the Post Office and stopped at the local Honda place to pick up some 10W fork oil and there was one guy that admired her.
That knew what it was.  LOL

He was of the opinion that the new bikes, while very trick are too complicated and too heavy for a comparable displacement. :)

So, today I changed the Fork Oil from 30Wt BelRay to 10Wt BelRay.  WORLD of DIFFERENCE!!!!!  And it is a GOOD difference.
Kind of hard to imagine that the difference in the front forks is that big, but, I guess it is.
Before the Restore, I had the following configuration:
Original K6 Fork Seals, S&W Progressive Rate Fork Springs (28/48) no pre-load spacer, BelRay 30Wt Fork Oil (155ml per leg)
On restore this is where I went.
New Double lipped (11.5mm) fork seals, Progressive Brand progressive rate Fork Springs (35/55) with the pre-load spacer (approx. 1.5" pvc), BelRay 30Wt Fork Oil (155ml per leg)
The new springs and the heavy fork oil were just plain flat too stiff.  Hence the change to 10Wt BelRay.  Huge difference.
Hard to believe that a 7 pound difference in spring rates would mean dropping from 30Wt to 10Wt fork oil, but it did.

Also, found a little "trick to getting the fork caps on which was a bear.  Took a 19mm Box end wrench and slipped it over the shaft of the ratchet extension with the 23mm socket on it.  Pushed down on the ratchet and kind of pried up on the 19mm wrench under the handlebars and it did the trick.  This is for those under 165 Lbs and over 60 years old.  Hahahaha

Found kind of by accident, why my neutral light wasn't working.  Wires pinched between the bottom of the dashboard and the Steering stem nut (cause I have the Setbacks that put the bars a little closer to me.  Turned the wires so they were facing the front of the bike and no more pinch.  I have a working Neutral light.

Sanded the Front brake pad a bit and beveled the edge of the fixed pad (already had beveled the moving pad) and the Squeal was reduced quite a bit.  Would be very interested in anyone who is using something other than the EBC Brake Pads, what kind of pad and what kind of results you are getting.  Have looked at several threads and have not really come up with much.  Possibly the Daido DH03 pads, but not sure.  Would like to get some confirmation on that as well.

Found my old Levi's Denim riding jacket, from 28+ years ago (Was new closer to 38 years ago.) down in the cedar closet in the basement.  It still fits!  :)  :)  :)  So I wore it today when I tested out the forks and brakes.  LOL

Clutch is already getting smoother.  That or I'm just remembering how to properly let the clutch engage.  :)  :)

Got a few more little things to clean up, but now that she is actually a rider, I can do them over the weekend.

Oh, last thing for today.  The vacuum sync is holding nicely.  Once she is warmed up she's idling very nicely at between 1000 & 1100 rpm and not sounding lumpy.  Thanks, Stev-o!!!!!

Hey Charlie - You're welcome, glad to have helped.

I also put Progressive spings in my K4, but no preload spacer and used ATF.  Front end feels real good.

Did you put grease on the back of the brake pad?

Stev-o,

That's what this is all about!!!!  :)

You don't run a Vetter so you have less weight on the front end, so, I'm not surprised about running the ATF.  What I am curious about is not using the pre-load spacer.  I'm trying to figure out what kind of road surface you would see the biggest difference in the suspension.  I would guess that it would be on the initial compression when hitting a bump???  There would be more compression at the lower spring rate is my guess.  Would be interesting to see a video of what the front wheel is doing and compare to my configuration.

And Yes I did put grease on the back of the pad.  Thanks for thinking of that though.
I also adjusted the clearance to 0.003 on the fixed pad side with the adjuster screw and nut.

I think the only thing I haven't done is cut an "X" in the pads like some have talked about.

Wondering what pads others are running cause I'm really starting to dislike the EBC pads.  :)  (Even with the limited couple of rides I've taken.

I used NOS Daidos, they stopped well - I have/had dual disc :) - and they were reasonably quiet.  Of course the squeal would randomly come but I think it is inevitable.

One thing I learned is that modern fork oil - such as Belray - will leak up top past the oil seal in CB750 forks.  Just something to be aware of.

Prokop,

Thanks for the info on the Daido pads.
Curious about the fork seals you used and saw the BelRay leaking past the seals?
But I will keep an eye on the forks and the seals.

Thanks,

I blamed me and crappy job I did on seals or getting wrong set of seals or whatever but recently I read Hondaman post where he stated the modern fork oil will leak and that's why he is using engine oil in forks he rebuilds.

My Yamaha RD350 manual specs motor oil for the front forks and thats what I used when I rebuilt them last year.

This is exactly what I'm observing with NOS Daidos. Stopping is pretty great and they were quiet until about the 700 mile mark against a blanchard ground rotor, then squealed for about 30 miles, now quiet again.

For the fork oil, I went with Mark's suggestion of using the simplest: Rotella 10w30 Diesel rated oil that will not foam on you nor will it eat seals (which synthetics typically do, I'm told). Progressives without the spacer, the feel is damn near ideal for me and I'm about 175 on a buffet lunch day ;D ;D

Charlie, did not even know they made fork oil in 30w.  That is way too HEAVY.  Heaviest I ever saw was 20w.  I generally use 15w in sohc4's and it makes for a nice firm ride and I have never had any problem with leakage.  I weigh 190lbs.  The Vetter shouldn't change the fork oil requirement much as I am always amazed by how light they are while hauling them out to the dumpster....ha ha, actually I have plans for one but its got to have the lowers. :D
If it works good, it looks good...
