Topic: "Break in" miles on new rings and honed cylinders?

Hey guys,

Did my piston rings and had the cylinders honed, just wondering how many miles the break in period should last? Iv read to ride it fairly hard (without redlining), no constant rpm, lots of speeding up and down shifting ect...

couple of hours will do it,change the oil as they'll shed metal in 3 and 3/4 hours use.

I watched on of those car shows on TV, Fast and Loud, where they had a freshly rebuilt or maybe brand new engine, and they used "break in oil". It contains extra zinc to harden metal surfaces like the cam lobes and lifter pads.

Is there any truth/validity to that?

Just done mine on a 750 and used mineral competition running in oil.

Have done 90 miles and plan on another 100, then change oil and filter to standard mineral oil, plus adjust valve clearances, carbs and recheck cam chain adjustment.

May remove sump, to check pick up filter as well, depending on whether I have the exhaust off.

(I went with a cheap dino oil and added zddp)
Ran it pretty hard for the first 30 miles after a hone/re-ring.  All rpms.  Nothing constant.
Changed oil (same cheap dino+zddp) and filter w/magnets
Did another 70 miles in all RPM's.
Changed oil (my preferred oil) and filter w/magnets.
Almost at 500 where i'll do it again.

....not one bit of smoke.

is it best to use the cheapest oil I can find for break-in? and then run it moderately hard at all rpms ? I like that & I think it might help break-in the new rings better. I've always gone real easy(I think too easy)for the first 600mi. and I think it took forever to seat the rings.

I dont know if its 'best' but cheap (oreillys auto house brand) oil and leftover zddp was what i had on hand, so thats what I used for the first and second break-in intervals.
Once I got my vacuum sync done, I was off to find short straights and wind it up.  No moderation on rpms here

Read a few of the threads on the forum about it.  Just search ZDDP.  Hondaman speaks volumes    Its wear protection....
You have a few options.
-order it online(amazon) as an oil additive
-get other brand additives containing zddp, like Rislone
-buy an oil containing high levels of zinc/phos (VR1)
(After initial break-ins, I am using (non synth) Valvoline VR1 Racing 20w50.  High zinc/phos + low detergents)

Actually Advance Autoparts carries it, not Autozone at least in VA which is not that far from PA.  Yellow bottle Rislone.

Wouldn't use additives. Too much zinc IS harmful and this whole zinc thing is out of proportion if you ask me. All oils still contain some zinc.

Wasn't it the introduction of catalytic converters that forced lower levels of zinc in gas car oils? Before that, oils were optimized for best protection. Now they are compromised, having to accommodate the catalytic converters. Diesel and race engines don't have cat converters so oil types for them is preferred. That's how I see it.
