I'm using the Yoshi road race cam, which is nearly identical to the 126-20 megacycle. My thinking was a little opposite of yours. I wanted more topend speed. My 79 cb650 had a 17in rear wheel all of the other models had a 16. I don't have my exact numbers in front of me, but I remember with a 18in rear and a 17/37 set up , a loss of 10% torque but a 10% higher top speed.

Wasn't aware they used anything other than 18". The plot thickens!

Yeah, I'm thinking now that I may do a 17/39 (2.29:1). If I want to get a little more pep I can put in a 16 (2.44:1). They're cheap enough and takes 5 minutes to install.

The 40 rear may be a bit extreme...I don't know, haha. I guess that's what test rides are for.

Are you sticking with the 530 chain or swapping to a 520 for lightness?

No idea, haha. I'm not overly concerned about weight savings on this. I'm 140lbs so as a set, the bike and I will be pretty light. That being said, if they're comparable in price I'd go with the lighter one.

What does a 520 conversion entail? Just a spacer to accommodate the thinner front sprocket? I'm looking into it now, hmmm.

Regarding the gear ratios again...it doesn't help that the later 650s had different primary reductions than earlier ones. And some gears were different sizes. Second picture is the addendum for the '82. Glad there's this much info in the manual.

There's a lot to think about. I think I've settled on 16/39 but who knows, I change my mind on a whim...but you guys know that already :))

Another "by the way" I just made up an 18" degree wheel. Huge compared to the 8" one I used previously, haha.

Haha, I don't know about Cam but I'm 5'5", maybe 5'6" if I do a hipster hairstyle ;)

I'm half Swedish and half Chilean. I have the thinness of a Swede but the height of a Hispanic...

Where you guys getting your 520 sprockets from? I can't seem to find a source for the 650.

Finding a 39t 520 sprocket (or 530 for that matter) for a 550 is not easy. There's plenty for 650's...anyone know if those will fit?

I also emailed Sprocket Specialists to get a quote on a custom aluminum one. We'll see what they say :).

My 550 sprocket is 2.5mm thicker so a 520 should fit fine. But I did find a JT 520 16t for a 650 on eBay.

Having a hard time finding properly sized Bridgestone BT45's. My current tires are as follows:
Front: 3.5-19
Rear: 4.00-18

Which are a little bigger than what's in the manual:
3.25-19
3.75-18

Since the BT45's are only available in metric sizes, I think I'm looking for something like a 90/90-19 front and 100/90-18 rear. All I can find is a 100/90-19 front and a 110/90-18 rear, which seems too wide.

I'm also not against the Avon road riders which seem a bit cheaper and come in the inch sizes and also metric sizes I'd need (I think...I'll have to double check on that).

Thoughts?

Dave,

I really don't think the extra 10mm front and rear will make a huge difference.  We're not talking about going from a sport rear 180 to a 360 after all.  I run a larger (130 or 140) rear on my 550 and it handles great - no adverse handling issues.
