I agree with what you are saying Cal with one exception if the religion comes knocking on my door and I politely decline proselytizing and it's pushed I will destroy with humor or other to drive them away for there limits on the other end as well.
Bill the demon.
Same here Bill, we get the Jehovah's witnesses a lot round here, I tell them "i'm a Jehovah's bystander, I'm not like the witnesses, i don't like getting involved....
I don't bother to ask what branch of religion door-knockers claim to represent, I politely hold up my hand like a traffic cop signaling to stop, and say "I'm not interested. Thank you." End of conversation.

That is funny. I had them coming around a lot every Saturday. My Wife wondered why I spent so much time with the guy when I usually sent them packing.
I rolled my K8 out in the driveway and rolled out the toolbox. When he showed up I was always in the middle of something.
I would say, "I need to work on this while you are talking." He would go on and I would say, handing him some rubber gloves, can you grab the 12mm, or "can you hold this".
This went on for several weeks. My Wife got pissed until I explained, "this guy is a fairly good mechanic and who else is gonna help me.
Finally, he gave up, but I got the bike done.
