K3 Project has now started.
« on: January 23, 2017, 07:19:19 PM »
Ok, this is it, I finally got the K3 I've been moving toward. The original owner needed to find a new home for it. It runs fine with the usual exceptions such as carb tuning, head bearings loose, swing arm bushings and a few other things. 29,636 miles. Needs a set of stock exhausts. My goal is to make it like new again in K0 candy blue green (my first CB750, 1970), otherwise mostly stock. The frame will be powder coated, engine freshened up (especially cam chain and top end). All black parts re-coated, aluminum either polished or painted similar to stock livery. No hurry, I will do it as $$ allows. I will try to post some photos as I go. Since I live on Maui I will likely make some decisions based on our ocean environment like replacing the spokes with stainless, etc. I'm wondering if clear coating the forks after polishing is a good idea and what product to use. I will be re-watching Dean's Hackaweek episodes a lot.

It'll be great to see a restored bike on Maui.

Aloha.  I used to live in Kihei many moons ago.  Was there three years ago for a visit.  My ex-brother-in-law runs a body shop there...if you need some help with the paint work.

Due to our marine environment here I am thinking of stainless spokes. Has anyone heard a downside to using them?

None, especially given the exposure to salt air.

I guess you can still buy chrome spokes, but why?

I've also gone the extra mile and replaced all the hardware on my build with stainless steel hardware.  I'm on the gulf coast and don't like looking at rusty chrome hardware.

By hardware, do you mean the fasteners? Or have you also obtained stainless parts as well.
Thank you for the answers all.

Yeah, all nuts, bolts and washers.  I say all, but there have been a few that I've had to use stock fasteners because it was Honda specific or I couldn't find a ss equal.  Mine is more of a custom build rather than a restoration though, so I've tried to simplify things and used ss where I could.

Ok, here is a question.
I want my K3 to have painted headlight can and fork ears, like a K0. Does anyone know if they are compatible? Can I swap K0 fork ears into a K3?
Thank you all

You can bead blast the chrome and use a good metal etching or epoxy primer, then paint the ears to match.

Ouch
I just could not stand to look at it any more, so I ordered the stock (replica) exhaust from David Silver Spares. Only hurts once. I will install them, give a good tune up and carb synch, ride it a bit and make my "to do" and parts list up for the rest of the project. My wife wants me to ride her around on it before I take it apart.
Does anyone have a good fix for the faded switch gear and master cylinder? Are they paintable?
Or do I just get new stuff?
I will be doing some of the Hondaman mods such as headlight relay, etc. I'm hoping to send the head and cylinders to him as well.
Thank you for all the great input.

Thinking ahead....
This bike had dual discs at some point and I have the parts. I did this conversion back in the day but I forget some things. The bleeder port and brake hose port are reversed on the right caliper. Can this be changed by moving what appears to be an insert for the brake line to the other hole? If so it would be symmetrical.

In order to preserve as many usable small parts as possible, I want to set up a little zinc chromate plating bath. I have cruised the various videos and it seems very doable with a little practice. The only part I can't seem to find is where to get the chromate conversion solution. I'm sure someone here knows the answer to this. Any help would be appreciated.
