79 CBX project
« on: June 05, 2018, 05:39:08 AM »
Well the 74 CB550 is running great thanks to all the help I received here.  Guess it's time to start on it's big brother.  Both were parked back in 88 NOT with the intention of leaving them for 29 years.

I'm hoping the CBX will be as easy as the 550.  Some rust in the tank carb rebuild and some brake work.  Fingers crossed.  My evapo-rust was delivered yesterday!

Right now the bike is as dead as a door nail.  Off with the tank for cleaning and a wiring inspection will be next.  Probably purchase Mike Nixon's booklet, "Rebuilding the CBX1000 Carburetor" before starting on the carb rebuilds.

If your CBX was parked in '88, you WILL have to go through the carbs! There is, never has been any CBX that was parked for more than 2 years which did not require carb work. If the carbs were no drained, the small jets and the accelerator circuit are gummed up. If the carbs were drained, most likely the O-rings are dried out and leaking.
Prepare yourself for quite a few hours of work and/or frustration. Engine need to be tilted to get the carbs out and very few get the carbs running right on first try.
If you don't have it already, Mike Nixon, a former Honda service rep put together an invaluable little pamphlet on how to restore CBX carbs.
It is available on ebay of from the author himself.

Parts can be a PITA to find and very expensive.....I have a red 79 in pieces and have been collecting all the parts for 5 years. Have 99% of the parts now and even scored a NOS Sport Kit for a very fair price.

Randall has a very good kit for CBX carbs.  It and the book you mentioned are what I used.

You will have to pull the pressed-in slow jets out. They sit under rubber plugs. You can tap them and use a small M3 or M4 screw to pull them out. Very difficult to get completely clean without pulling them. Also, the emulsion tubes have a tendency to stick. You may have to heat the jet tower they sit in and/or soak the carbs in hot soapy water for a while.

Find a turbo kit for it and you can leave those six carbs in the garage.

Good looking CBX, be looking in to see how it goes with yours. I had a 1980 CBX, for about 6 years. Then, situation changed & I needed to come up with some cash and with me getting older, I thought it was best to let it go. Boy, I have been regretting it ever since.

Got Mike's carb rebuild book in the mail and was going to start this weekend, but I got side-tracked with this little beauty.

2011 CBR250R with less than 6000 miles.  Needs just a tiny bit of tlc, but got a great price and it's a blast to ride.  Plus I can ride it to my night job.... won't take the '74 CB550 for fear that something would happen to it in the parking lot.

Fyi if you need any parts, a friend of mine has 3 cbx's, and a parts room for them. Probably enough to build 2 more, at least 1 complete one.

I saw a red 79 CBX earlier this week. I like the stock look. I have forgotten how nice the engine sounds. Really quick throttle response.
A NOS looking -79 will be fine in my garage.
