If it was dark on ride? On dark night and a clear sky the cold of space sets in quickly, it is interesting how being in the sun warms you a little even if it is a cold day.
Getting light here at 7:22am and dark at 5:54pm today

Way back when I was young and foolish, there was a huge midwinter snowstorm, a foot or more snow on the ground and still more falling. Being midwinter I was craving a motorcycle ride so I hopped on my SL100 dirtbike with full knobs and set off with visions of powerslides and drifting nirvana. But… it was all I could do to keep the bike upright. There were several dumps before I made the first cross street. I pressed on hoping my skills would quickly improve but it wasn’t happening, so I turned around with my tail between my legs and putt-putted back into the garage, content to wait for spring.
I’m no longer young, but the rest of my book is still being written. :) :)

I think that's it, even under all my layers. I don't leave for work for at least an hour after sunrise if I'm riding, to be sure any iciness has melted off the asphalt and anything remaining is predictably located and visible. I leave work after it's dark.

Wow, Dunk, you are a glutton for punishment!  Should I start a Go Fund Me acct to get you some gear?!!

18* this morning when I left. I wanted to cut out of work early and stop at cycle gear to see about heated gloves, but I got stuck working until after dark. Another day.

A set of hand guards like the adventure bikes have and heated grips are sometimes a better solution with a set of wool liners with leather gloves is my go to...
Once things warm up remove the guards. I bought a set of Oxford (UK company) that works really well.
Heated gloves that work well and last are going to be in 175-200 range or higher. The Gerbings have really fell in quality in recent years from what I have read. See what RevZilla has and recommends, talk to a GearGeek... You might want to buy at Cyclegear... Depends on your buying preferences...

You will spend a bit more but you will find that the guards give you enough wind protection that your hands don't get cold any you don't need to turn the grips on when it gets 45-50 or above...
Also depends upon the length of your ride how much heat and protection you need.

Went on a 40 mile ride yesterday. Met a fellow rider at Rainbow drive-in for breakfast and rode around Haunama Bay and Sandy Beach, turned around at Makapuu and hit the winding roads back to Honolulu. my riding partner has a Kawi 750 motor in a 500 frame so i was playing catch up the whole way.

That’s a beast by the sound of it mate, got any pics? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I stopped by Cycle Gear but they didn't have anything in stock. RevZilla is close but I'll never give them another penny after an experience last year getting absolutely terrible (and outright hostile) customer service. I went to Cycle Gear afterward and they were super friendly and helpful for what we needed (I got some maintenance stuff, but we spent a fair bit getting a helmet and gear for a new rider friend).

In any event, I ordered FirstGear heated gloves, controller, and Y cable shipped to me. I finally got a chance to try them on now that I'm done shoveling snow for the week, and I'm very disappointed in the fit. The left and right gloves are literally two different sizes though both marked large. Left feels like a large in most brands and fits me well enough for a winter glove, but the right glove is clearly smaller in the finger length. I'm guessing a production mishap that got past QC. Bummer, I hooked them to a battery and they feel heavenly (in a 60* garage anyway). I'll give a shot at trying for consistently sized replacements. Bummer, I was looking forward to heated gloves for my Monday morning below freezing ride to work after the snow melts this weekend. In what I've read, Gerbing quality and customer support is not what it used to be. There is little info on FirstGear though it seemed mostly positive.

If round 2 with these gloves works out they are 15 watts each. I figure 30w might work with the 225w CB750 alternator, plus solid state regulator and clean wiring. Might have to replace the bullets on the stator wiring with blades as they tend to need a slight crimp to tighten them up periodically. I have a Cibie H4 reflector on all my bikes, huge improvement so I can probably go down to a 35w bulb and be better than a sealed beam. I do have a CB750A alternator collecting dust somewhere, those are supposedly 285w. I was planning to use that on my restored K1 next time it's apart but it may make more sense to use on the daily rider K5.

Dunk, you've had issues with customer service?  >:( I DO understand some of that.
What used to be 'customer service' doesn't seem to be around much anymore..  I hope Cycle Gear is able to let you look at their Parts Unlimited & Tucker Rocky catalogs to where you can make your own choices in products.

We Need Honest manufacturers who aren't in it Just for the $ but want to 'Make a Customer For Life' customer appreciation.I remember certain vendors in the past would research all the products that're out there and give a 'heads up' to their customers to let them know they Do have better choices.

I used to live back in New England and just moved out here in 2017'.
I owned Gerbing heated gear back in the 90's and it was a good fit and worked stellar.

I last rode my 750 last fall, my 650 in... 2007 or 2008? Back when W handed out stimulus checks. And my chopper, I've never ridden it.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

Well I've gone as far as I can with my Kawasaki Z1-B until my new RS34 carbs arrive, so tomorrow I'm gonna take my K0 or K2 bitsa for a ride. ;D

Today was a great day. After a breakfast of peanut butter on home made wholemeal toast (thanks Eric) the doorbell rang and to my surprise, it was the UPS man with 3 boxes, one huuge, containing the Kawasaki Z1-B OEM bodywork and fenders that I'd bought from Nils Menten a couple of weeks ago.

Z1-B bodywork 6 Feb 2022 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

It was actually better than I'd expected. I've always liked black Z1's, so I think I might put the bodywork on my 1428 build when I restificate it back from the dead next. I also had a mate offer me a used Z1 front brake MC (mine's a repro) for $100, so I grabbed that too, just to go in the "OEM box" for if and when I ever sell it. Anyway, I hid all the parts and drove over to the self storage place, so I could go for a ride on the magnificent K0. I rolled it out into the sunlight and fired it up so the engine would have a chance to warm up while I put on my jacket, helmet and gloves.

I'd filled it up on the return leg of my last ride, so I didn't need to stop for fuel which was good, because it was ridiculously expensive out on the highway. I stopped at a little town in the middle of nowhere and took a couple of pics as I gave my poor back a rest, the "Road less travelled" is my favourite, but it is also the "Road most pot holed" ;D

I rode on to Heathcote and stopped at the bakery for a meat and vegetable pastie for lunch. I wandered back out to the bike, and a Harley guy was admiring the old red rocket. He was a bit younger than me, but obviously liked old CB750's, so we had a yack before we hopped on our bikes and roared off in different directions. I got back to the self storage place and realised that I've now done 2400 trouble free miles on the K0, and as the last oil change was at 500, I'd better order a new filter and this time I might even pony up the dough for some "Motorcycle Only" oil, instead of the car oil that I've been using, without issues. All in all, a great day! ;D

It must be wonderful to have a ride like that with something tasty included. ;D

Rides comes closer for me, "only" 2 months left. Last year one early ride February 28. Frost returned so next ride last week of March. Frost back once more and a week in April the season could start without salty roads and freezing cold.
I prefer at least +15C when starting, can be a few less after an hour or 3.

The pipes look bluish on the photo Terry. Or is it the shadows that make them to look like that?

Good thing with SS pipes,  they can be fixed within a few minutes polish the colorations away. A ride later back to the bronze tone.
I have done that a few times on my Hindle.

Thanks Per, I had a great ride, the old K0 is the best "nearly standard" CB750 I've ever ridden, which is saying a lot. I might clean the pipes up when I give it an oil change. Considering that I was "Locked down" for 108 days in 2021, I'm pretty happy that I managed to clock up 2400 miles (3854 Km) in the 9.5 months that I was allowed to ride anywhere. Lockdown 2021 was truly my "Winter of Discontent"....... ;D

Looks very nice Terry. The exhaust looks like it belongs on the bike, sometimes they don’t. Can you do the oil change with the exhaust in place?
I like the more nimble ride that comes with a half tank of fuel. But I generally start with a full tank and fill just before home. That exhaust is much lighter than 300’s too.

Thanks Kevin, yep that exhaust is great, doesn't foul the centrestand, no problem dropping the filter canister (even on my K2 with an oil cooler fitted) or the sump plug, and it makes the old bugger sing. I've got 39 days to get my Kawasaki Z1-B running well (new carbs on their way from the US) and on the road legally so that I can ride it 1000 miles next month for the 50th anniversary "Stone Ride", but if it's not going to be ready, I'm seriously considering taking the K0. If the weather's gonna be wet I'll take the Triumph Rocket III with it's big fairing, but if it's gonna be good, I don't think the Kawasaki boys will mind if I tag along on the ol' K0? ;D

The Kawasaki boys will be jelous if they will see a K0.

They should be grateful since that bike might be the reason for the birth of the Z1-900! ;D

Terry, do you have time to fiddle with new carbs?

Thanks Per, actually from what I’ve seen the Kawasaki guys who’ve owned Z1’s since the 70’s don’t have much interest in CB750’s, a guy I spoke to in England last night said he had a K6 but didn’t think much of it, as it wasn’t all that fast?

No matter, I like them both. I love Mikuni carbs, my last new one (HSR42 on my Sportster) was super easy to set up, so I’m hoping the RS34’s are the same, but either way, I’m going, I bought my tickets and booked my accommodation yesterday, so it’ll be a great weekend either way! ;D

Woohoo! Hey thanks Brian, I was really struggling with the thought of a big ride like that in one day, last time I rode that far I was exactly half as old as I am now, and at that stage didn’t have “Paratroopers back”, so yep, I’d love to take you up on your very generous offer!

You cannot miss that event, Terry!
A good reason to buy a Kawasaki!
A Z1-900 was a different league even when I bought my K6 1979.

I had ideas to buy a new GS1000G early 80's, never a Z1-900 or Z1000.
1000J passed thru my brain very quick ... Strange....
I'm happy that I saved my K6 though! This forum is a fun place.

No matter, I like them both. I love Mikuni carbs, my last new one (HSR42 on my Sportster) was super easy to set up, so I’m hoping the RS34’s are the same, but either way, I’m going, I bought my tickets and booked my accommodation yesterday, so it’ll be a great weekend either way! ;D

That's a nine / ten hour ride Uncle Tez. I'm right on the halfway mark if you are looking for a bit of back relief. The lovely Evelyn and I would be pleased to have you as a guest for the night.

Woohoo! Hey thanks Brian, I was really struggling with the thought of a big ride like that in one day, last time I rode that far I was exactly half as old as I am now, and at that stage didn’t have “Paratroopers back”, so yep, I’d love to take you up on your very generous offer!

Right!
We will confirm your booking ( Presidential Suit Chateaux Williams) as soon as you can give us the date.

You really do meet the nicest people in the strangest of places, even in the spinal unit of the Austin Hospital! ;D
The older I get the faster I was.
