Sync’d the carbs on the Sandcast this afternoon. After struggling for ages with the bench sync and the infernal 4-1 throttle cables, it only took a few minutes and it’s running spectacularly well! Very happyish!

We had our big car cruise friday night. We hired Joe Zolper from the Builders Brawl drag race series and Garage Squad TV to bring his Daytona for the afternoon and evening. The guy is a pro and a genuine hoot to be around. He built not only the Daytona but also built the toter home from a used semi tractor.

One of our kids took us to see Nate Bargatze, his opener was a riot. There is a John Deere plant near there that just had a layoff so they can move jobs to mexico.
A few folks came in late and the opening comedian said oh, nice to see the rich folks come in late, got dropped off, don't have to fight the traffic, sit in the front row, probably had a busy day laying people off. Crowd went OOOOooh. Funny man said that's the problem with being in the 1%, there's so few of you. Dang, he went right for the jugular.
All 5 guys there were hilarious.

I had to go to court on Monday. Well, if I’d paid the parking ticket I wouldn’t have had to go to court, but I don’t like bending to my local councils cash grabs, which was all this is, every year they see where you’re parked and issue you with a council parking violation ticket, this one was around $80, US.

Now like a lot of local councils ours has been infiltrated by hippies and greenies who would fine you for farting and producing greenhouse gas. They’re so corrupt that their first attempt at issuing parking fines was during COVID lockdowns when everyone was working from home (if they were lucky enough to keep their jobs) and due to so many objections they withdrew the fines, but they came back with a vengeance and have been fining us for parking on the sidewalk (footpath, nature strip, etc, depending on where you’re from, so every year I’ve been sending them back and ticking the box to say I’ll go to court.

Well finally after 3 years I received a summons to go to court on Monday. As it turned out, my courtroom was just for people from my area who had received parking fines. I was getting a little pissed off because I’d been there for 2 3/4 hours before my case came up, but it was good as I’d had time to listen to other people’s excuses and saw the reaction from the prosecution and the magistrate and I was able to see what punishment they copped.

The magistrate was female and appeared pretty fair so if the other folks pleaded guilty they were either found guilty or innocent, if guilty the magistrate took in consideration that they’d pleaded guilty and didn’t make them pay the fine, but they had to pay court costs (averaging between $70 and $120) and had to accept a “good behaviour” bond for 3 months. (If they break the law for anything in that 3 months they had to pay the original fine/s plus whatever they get for their other crimes)

Anyway, I finally came up, and told the magistrate a much shorter version of what really happened, (mostly BS, infused with a modicum of the truth) and I was very happy that the magistrate swallowed my story hook, line and sinker, and I was found not guilty. That made me happy as it was the first “Not Guilty” judgement the magistrate had made all morning. Obviously I didn’t hang around to see how the other folks made out after me, but I did wonder if anyone else got off completely….. ;D

Thanks Per, I haven’t had a motorcycle speeding ticket since 1978, but the law takes a more stringent approach to speeding fines so I just pay them. I did go to court once to fight a car speeding fine but I relied on a statement I heard on talkback radio by the police commissioner that the fixed speed cameras were calibrated every 3 months, so my argument was that as the speed camera that got me was calibrated 5 months before the alleged offence it could be inaccurate.

Neither the prosecutor nor the magistrate knew the calibration length so the magistrate retired to his chambers and checked, and it turned out to be 12 months. I didn’t get a fine, but the offence was found proven and I had to make a $100 to the trauma ward of the Alfred Hospital (that mostly treated vehicle injuries) and was put on a good behaviour bond of 6 months, which I thought sucked balls. ;D

I took my RE Interceptor for a ride today to try out the 21" front wheel I built for it earlier this year.
It works perfectly, rides so much smoother and no issues with the ABS system, somehow even the speedometer is accurate to Google maps' speedometer. It's the only one of It's kind in the known universe now, none on youtube, Instagram or anywhere else that I've been able to find. More smiles per mile.

Looks good Alan, I don’t think I’ve seen one with a 21” front wheel either. How close is the front wheel to the headers under full fork compression? ;D

Thanks Stu & Terry.

Honestly I didn't check clearance under full compression but I do understand and respect the importance of this clearance. It did occur to me about halfway thru this ride, but I figured I'd know one way or the other soon enough, and the odds of compressing the suspension that far without the front wheel pointing forward were zero on a casual street ride.

I'll try to check it out tomorrow, do you think I should compress the suspension with a ratchet strap or just lean on it while holding the front brake while a helper watches for clearance issues?

I do have fork mods in mind but I'm not sure when I'll be getting them done.

Alan, would you be able to remove only one-side fork spring, which will allow both forks to bottom w/ less resistance,to check the bump stop ?

I see.
Well, you'll know for sure when the forks 'bottom' on a bump..
I would certainly take the "time" to sort this.
Alan,I'm surprised you haven't done this initially, because you're really into front fork swaps as shows in your signature.

G’day Alan, yeah I was looking through my glass sliding door out to the patio at my sons RE 650 and just wondered if it would interfere with anything. I think your idea of just grabbing the front brakes and pushing it forward while someone else looks on would be a good enough gauge on whether you need slightly longer forks, I know that we’re only talking about maybe bringing the wheel/fender a couple of inches closer to the front of your engine and you’re right that it would be unusual to fully compress your forks at full lock, but probably worth checking just for your peace of mind.

As you said you’re probably the first person in the world to install a 21 inch front wheel where an 18 inch front wheel was, so I’m sure other folks on RE forums etc are going to ask. ;D

Well done to your son and daughter in law Trevor, I went to my son’s engagement party last night and watched his young fiance fawning over one of her friends babies and realised that I might just become a grandfather after all, and the thought made me happy. ;D

Huge Congratulations to Trevor, and a smile and a pat on the back for you too Terry.

Honestly nobody else seems to care at all about this little project, a few likes and thumbs up but few comments.  Bill and Terry are leading the pack cautioning me to be sure there won't be a clearance issue. I was thinking about it yesterday, I'll leave the steering locked and set my phone to record a video of the important area while I climb aboard and compress the suspension while holding the front brake. More on this to come.

Fork clearance seems OK, I've updated the relevant thread. I'm happy.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,190434.msg2300700.html#msg2300700

I compressed 3.5" (about 1/8" further than the grime ring the dust seal left behind) and found 1/2" clearance remaining between headers and fender. Fork tubes are raised 8mm from the factory so I'll level those with the top triple soon for extra room.

Good job Alan, better to be safe than sorry. Spotty and I dragged my “free” Kawasaki Kz750 out of storage a couple of weeks ago with the intention of getting it running again after a 10 year hibernation. We changed the oil and filter (which is up where the starter motor sits on most bikes of the era) and were happy that there was no metal in the oil.

The front master cylinder was badly corroded and didn’t work so I bought a rebuild kit for it, which was a little bit different to what came out of it, and after installing everything we couldn’t get any lever pressure out of it so I bought the cheapest “Generic” MC assembly on Amazon ($20 AUD with free delivery) and installed it yesterday and have now got a pretty good lever pressure. At this stage the intent is to sell it, but I’ll take it for a ride before I do, just in case I decide that it’s another keeper.

The tank was pretty much empty and was surprisingly clean so I mixed some carb cleaner with a gallon of fresh gas, and turned the fuel on, which immediately started pissing out of the overflow on the left carb. It had plenty of spark with the battery I’d taken out of the K0, and would run if we sprayed carb cleaner into the air box, but no amount of tapping the float bowl would stop fuel running out, so we pulled the carbs and I took them home to clean in my ultrasonic cleaner.

I pulled them apart and the left carb was disgusting. The float had actually seized and I couldn’t remove the pin. I stripped the right carb and it was really clean. I was able to remove the float and float valve with no issues, so I removed the slides to check the diaphragms and they were both good. Rather than risk snapping off a float pivot tower I decided to put the carbs in the ultrasonic cleaner as is, hoping that the heat and the new degreaser I’d bought would help to remove the float.

The degreaser was just some cheap water based stuff I’d bought on Amazon for I think about $15 for a 5 litre container, and I used the garden hose to fill the 30 litre cleaner so I wasn’t really expecting a great result considering that the $200 20 litre container of simple green aircraft parts cleaner I previously used didn’t really make a set of carbs look as nice as some carbs I’ve seen guys post, but to my surprise, after an hour or so, the carbs were perfect! Woohoo!

I pulled them out of the cleaner and the brass float came off as easy as could be. Only problem was, it has a pinhole in it. Bugger. Rob, the previous owner had told me that it might have a pinhole as apparently that was a common ailment with KZ750 twins. I’d thought about soldering the hole, or using a splotch of JB Weld, then I wondered if perhaps one of the H1 500 floats might fit, but really wasn’t confident. I pulled one out, and was surprised (and happy) that they’re identical! Woohoo again!

I used my cheap little Amazon ultrasonic cleaner to clean all the little bits like screws and jets etc in some other degreaser that Spotty recommended and they all came up like new, so I’ll put the carbs back together and check the float levels, then next weekend I’ll take them back to Spotty’s place and we’ll reinstall them and see if it’ll go. Being an American import it has no mixture screws visible (I think they’re there, but have metal caps pressed in over them so owners can’t mess with them, like the OEM carb on my Harley Sportster) but as it ran fine until Rob parked it up, it shouldn’t need any fine tuning. I am happy that I have another float for it, if I decide to sell it I don’t want to spend any more on it than I need to. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

I looked at the other thread;are they bottomed ?
The 8mm extra on the tubes may be just enough.

Alan, did you change to a 21" front because you plan to enjoy the bike off-road ?

I had always hoped to find a map of green-trails on a type of GPS app.. to sort of skirt-around private property;a person can get tired of being at the mercy of automobiles/traffic patterns every time I go for a ride.

There are probably apps like that available but I haven't looked into it. I'm interested in going confidently wherever the road takes me, which has so far included dirt, gravel, unmaintained roads, double track.... I'm sure I'll take it to some more challenging places eventually. This wheel rides so much smoother than the stock 18 that I'd seriously consider keeping it if I switch to street tires.
