Cool story Derek. Had a similar incident years ago when a mate and i bought a 14ft bondwood boat that needed some fixing. When we bought it it had a 50 horse mariner engine on it that didn't go but only needed a small amount of work to get it going. We go the boat seaworthy and were in a hurry to see what she was like in the water so we decided to use the auxiliary 5hp Johnson i had just so we could go for a spin...Anyway we were about 5 miles offshore in Moreton Bay and just off Coochie Mudlo Island when we clipped a sand bar and broke the sheer pin on the prop.......no go anywhere now....

. We walked the boat the 100 yards to the Island as it was quite shallow and after working out what had broken started thinking about how we were going to fix the problem and get back to the mainland. I had a pair of pliers and a shifting spanner {adjustable wrench} in the front of the boat and that was all we needed to remove the prop. After scratching my head for a while i went to the public toilet that was on the island and while taking a pee i spotted a loose nail in the door. I went back and got the pliers and pulled the nail out and went back to the boat, the nail ended up being the same size as the sheer pin and we were off again.
The wife used to say to me that i did my best thinking whilst camped on the toilet and i think this went some way to proving her right......She was joking of course

It seems no matter how prepared you are something can always go wrong.
I had lots of fuel, recharged the battery, packed a battery booster, just installed a new fire extinguisher, thought I was good to go

I do keep those 2 spare pugs in the well, it was just a matter of figuring out how to get it all done floating around

I know exactly what you mean mate. There was also the time when a mate and i decided to take his cousin out fishing and he threw the anchor out without connecting it to anything....

No more anchor, or the time we pulled up on an island to let a heap of rain out of the boat and my mate lost the bung....

Couldn't stop at all on the way home that time or we'd have sunk....

I have had some of the best, worst and funniest times of my life on the water....

A good tip, always keep a couple of old wine bottle corks in the tool kit.......brilliant for leaks....

A tampon might have fixed the leak Seaweb.

We were down launching our boat one day and these two newbies dropped a lovely big black ski boat into the marina, first guy drives off to find a park for car and trailer, second guy stands holding the painter rope.
That's about when we all started shouting "hoi your boats sinking"!

Mad dash for guy #1 to go get the car and trailer while the boat took on more water ha ha, they got it on just before it became a new underwater feature.

We used to go down to Cates park in N.Van right after the Boat Show to watch all the newbs practice their reversing down the ramp while having a picnic

My fishing buddy and I were all set for a great day of salmon fishing but the boat just wouldn't slip off the trailer at the launch. An old boy walking back up the ramp suggested it would slide off the trailer easier if we took the rear hold down straps off. He was right!

My idiot brother-in-law put a boat in without putting the drain plug in place, once. He noticed the water right away, but instead of going back on the trailer, he tied it up and went for a phone(before everyone had a cell) to call someone for advice.

I'm sooo glad he is now my ex brother-in-law.

No I don't have one. Right now the hole from floor to hull is only as big as your thumb. Just enough to drain out any water people drip in or waves over the bow. I would have to cut a bigger hole in the floor to install one, but maybe not a bad idea

Yeah in our old run about I used to do something similar....I would get the bow good and high at maybe 10-15 knots and go to the back of the boat and pull the drain plug. Then I would cruise for a while without planing and make sure it was all out and then go back and put the plug back in. It was more or less effective but a major PITA, the new boat (17 ft bow rider with a 70 ETEC) has all the fancy items like trim and tilt and a bilge pump

. It is amazing even with the cover etc how much water we pump out on a Friday night upon arrival.

Actually eventually we installed one in the old boat and all we did was fab a bracket to attach it in the well about 1/2 off the ground and had a hose coming off of it that we had run up along the transom and out the back. May not have been 100% effective but sure beat taking the chance of pulling the plug and either dropping or stalling (motor was about 30 yrs old at the time).
