I think swede hit it....its all about light and fast and nimble....function over form, doesn't matter how it gets there. Me, on bike i build for myself I combined any parts that I think will make a better bike.  I am in no way a purist, which bothers some people. To me, there is no set style, no checklist of modifications, but what comes out when function is put over form is a bike that I would call a cafe racer.

To me this is what has happened to the chopper scene.  Back in the day choppers were about removing anything non-essential parts from a bike...things happened out of necessity, fenders were cut short because it was cheaper than repairing them after they got bent...mirrors were removed because they broke, and guys could buy new ones, ect. Out of this mentality arose a style that people started replicate for style over function....and look where this has gotten to the point that has now reversed and become style over function..and we all know what I'm talking about.  Bikes that the average person could never even think of owning or bikes that are so tweaked that they are barley able to be ridden.  I saw a guy the other day with ape hangers so tall he literally could not stop at a light with both hands on the bars and his feet on the ground....

the cafe thing is not there yet....at least from what i've seen.  To me it reminds me of the early to mid nineties when import tuning scene started to come of age....there was alot of silly #$%* around back then...3" muffler pipes on honda civics, cars lowered so much the tires splayed out a craze angles...but there also alot of really slick cars being built.  And look where things are today in that scene....its become style over function once again.

hehehe.....  I asked the guy who is selling the Carpy-look-a-like bike about his statement "This is not trailer queen, it should suit you rockers and ton up boys just fine for your daily joyrides."

I specifically asked him, "You stated that this bike should suite ton up boys.  Does this mean that you have driven this bike over 100 mph?"  His response was:

Quote
Ok, this bike is not focused specifically on the "ton up" concept. When I stated that it should suit "ton up boys" and "rockers", I simply meant that this bike was built for riders looking for that style, attitude and nostalgia that is represented by "ton up boys" and "rockers". If you are focusing on only the "ton up", then I would suggest you find a "ninja" or "hayabusa". But to answer your question, the most that the meter read while I was riding was at 92mph.(I could try but road wasn`t long enough)
Thank you.

Yes...  ;D

Vespas are pretty sweet but dang they want a chunk of change for those things.  I think I will stick with the Honda 90 Trail bike I can throw it in low gear and climb over my house...  :D

There are a ton of Vespas around here (Portland, OR) and I always thought they were kinda cool and all but I like the Honda CT90 way better. That's actually what I was looking for when the CB500 came up - owned by a friend who wanted to see it have a good home. I totally didn't think I could handle it at first and it took a while to grow on me but now I am sooooo hooked. .. lol.

I still want to eventually pick up a CT90 though - as a grocery getter, cheap run-about sort of thing. They look like a moped on steroids to me.   ;D

Now this is what I'd like to see, a Cafe'd CT90! ::)

But seriously, even though there are a lot of folks here who are new to our bikes and somehow assume that Carpy "invented" the Cafe look, many of us are offended by that, as we've all been building CB750 "specials" since they rolled off the production line. Of course, some of us wouldn't be seen dead with some of the crap he puts on his bikes...............

Ooh, and by the way, I was watching "American Chopper" and saw that Paul Snr has just bought a CB750 period chopper. He referred to it as a "time machine", and I was impressed that even though Paul Jnr thought it was crap, Snr actually seemed to show some respect for it. Jnr was obviously born into money, but Snr's roots were showing. ;D

As further proof that crime doesn't pay, the reserve wasn't met.  Not knocking Carpy or the style of bike that he produces, but if swapping the tank and rear fender and gage backgrounds; and then adding a pedestrian slicer and a black/white paint job is all it takes to turn a few hundred dollars on a bike, I have just found a side job.

Seriously though, I like some of Carpy's designs, I like some of Benji's designs and have seen bikes from both that make me envious.  Just don't like the guy bolting on some aftermarket items and giving it a paint job to fit some predetermined sales point.  Makes me feel dirty just looking at it  ;).

Hey MoTo,  you are right about the Vespas I have seen quite a few around P-Town.  Also there is that really cool scooter shop I want to say it's on Hawthorne but I can't remember for sure.  The CT-90 is a blast to ride and there aren't many on the streets.  I also like the Trail 110's I've gotten my 90 up to about 55 mph (in a full tuck...  :D) so I imagine the 110 would have a bit more speed.

Hey Terry I can't say that I have seen many CT-90's with the cafe treatment but I have seen plenty of the Honda 50's, 70's, monkeys and gorillas that have been completely tricked out.

This one has been bumped up to 124cc and will do about 80 mph.

I used to live over on 30th and Burnside (I miss that neighborhood - got priced out because rent kept going up up up courtesy of all the development on 28th and Burnside) and I remember walking past a neat looking scooter shop between Belmont and Hawthorne? There are a lot of hot-rodded Vespas around.. ..they sound like insane chainsaws, going by. . . lol. I saw one in flat black with flames on it just flying by, one time - even had an extra tire on the back?!?

I heard someone saying that the CT110 wasn't as good as the 90s for some reason - don't recall what, something about reliability or something?  Dunno. . . .there are quite a lot of CT90s around in Oregon but not too many on the streets. I guess most of them are used as trail bikes or on the back bumper of RVs as run-abouts. I love the ones that have the full rack on back and that odd rounded extra gas tank on the side, with the full chrome exhaust guard. Quite the setup!

THAT is one crazy micro-Honda for sure. . .lol - 80MPH???  WTF?!   :o

I got the fake Carpy point, just saying that the guy didn't even try, just took Carpy's look straight out of the box and bolted it on.  Thats why I was saying I'm not knocking the look of Carpy's bikes, just the idea that someone bought it, bolted it on and tried to turn a good profit.  If it is that easy I'm starting a side business, I'll call it "Carpy's Middleman".  Either way though, I prefer the look of a bike that someone has but time and sweat into rather than a quick turnaround.

Yeah, but he sells all of these items on his site. He's even working on a gas tank to sell. So he he got it figured and is making his money either way.
I looked at the bike on e-bay, and well, yeah, I think he has a long way to go before Mr. Carpenter has anything to worry about.

With the money he's gotten out of some of his bikes you should feel bad for the buyers don't you think. They bought a name and didn't get much more in return IMO. Can't feel bad for someone that's stuck in a rut. It's like "Ground Hog Day", just cost more money each time.

Start getting ready for the new wave of "cafe" bikes...  I was just at the "artistry in Iron" motorcycle show in Vegas a while back - (it's a builder's invite only show 25 people - winner take all - 25k, builders vote nobody else)  It was during the middle of bike week.  Never seen that many bikes and bikers in my life....
Anyway, my buddy showed up with an old Kawasaki that had no more than $7500 dollars in it TOTAL -  5k was in the wheels alone, so the majority of it was done with old parts, fabricated parts and a bunch of elbow grease.  After talking to all the other builders about pricing and the costs associated with the flooded custom motorcycle market, they were astounded at how little his cost to make.  BTW, his bike got the 2nd most votes from the builders and it was built in about 5 weeks time...  Needless to say, the topic of CB750 and cafe style came up several times by several builders who normally will have 20k - 30k in parts etc. (not even counting all of the labor) as a way to actually make a profitable bike that could be sold to somebody who wasn't made of cash.   The late 60's early 70's vintage style is very hot with the premier builders now and for the last 5 years or so....don't think it's going away anytime soon.   It harkens back to the old hot rod days of the 50's and 60's where nobody had any money, or shiney new mail-order catalog parts to work with.  You made it faster and more unique (style-wise) with your own brain and ingenuity.   Just in the last year and a half I've noticed - at least in the Dallas-Ft Worth area of Texas that CB750s just don't come up for sale very often anymore..... I'm on craigslist almost everyday and I check the papers about half the time as well.   They are getting bought up and becoming more scarce.      Buy 'em while you can....the secret is out.

As for Carpy and his style, he wasn't there back in the day, but he was at the right place at the right time for bringing them back....southern california.   Not all his bikes are built at the same level of craftsmanship etc....it just isn't profitable to do that for him.  I think he even had a spot and won something with one of his cafe styled bikes at the Oakland roadster show (that's a BIG deal) a while back....  He's not exactly my style, but I like most of what he does....   I've looked at his site more than once....

Anyway that's enough rambling.... here's my latest project - I'll have less than 800 bucks in it by the time I'm done...labor is free and so is elbow grease..

Cafe style - who knows?   Still need to resolve rearsets & bars.  This one is a cafe/bar bike.....  The racier style will be my next project.    Don't you wish you had a time machine to go back and buy up some 750's ?

Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.
