SPIKEYBIKE'S EXTREME MAKEOVER (lots of pics)
« on: January 01, 2008, 03:58:13 pm »
So i had been kicking around many ideas for my seat ,none of them that good.

all right here is the scenario, it's Christmas day. i'm at the inlaws the kids are off playing with there new toys . father in law and i are having drinks (keep in mind that it's noon)
we are talking bikes (he's an old chopper guy, not that i hold that against him)
so as the day progresses i get to thinking about how i really want my seat to look . and i also realize that i'm getting really drunk (slurring before dinner is never good, even without family everywhere)
so i decide to hide in their computer room and sober up a little. and of course i came here....  so i'm in the BOTM thread looking at the pics of my bike next to pics of Johnbouy's, i'm admiring his seat ,tank set up (mmmmmm...dunstall)

then it hits me. like a slap in the face,"BAM"   if you would have been there you could have seen the lightbulb above my head.
i didn't just have an idea i had a master plan , and i knew i had to act on it quick because i was so drunk that i would forget . so i grab a loose piece of paper from the trash and a marker and sketch up this "rough draft"..

just looking at this pic makes me laugh , ... so the next day i have no memory of this happening, then i found this drawing and it slaps me in the face again.

and i got started within an hour ... so here is the starting point

and so it begins

i played with a few differant patterns before deciding on one

i cut the first side and made a template for the other side

starting to get the idea are you, now the real tricky stuff starts

back down to the basment to steal a shelf from my pile of use-able/weld-able metal
(witch is running low at this point)

here it is just tack welded in place

i cut the diamond shape in it so i could get to the wiring , and lined the edge
with 3/16" round bar to hep with the bondoing

i ran out of shelves ,for the seat pan i actually had to buy some sheet metal (18 gauge)

my last seat had a gotten a few "that looks un-professional" comments witch i took very seriously
since it is my business to fab, so this is very thought out, anyone who has followed this bike will know that i'm very detail oriented, and i stepped it up for the seat.

the front mounting bracket , plug welded and ground smooth

at this point i wanted to start the bondoing , i thought it would be easier to make the seat to the bike not the other way around, (i was wrong, you'll see later)

first round of many bondo layers

so the idea here is to make pegs in the back of the seat that slide in these holes and hold the back of the seat in place

these are side cover grommets for a goldwing they are larger then the grommets you can buy at the hardware store, and the "pegs" i'm gonna use are 8mm bolts

worked out perfectly, solid as a rock. there is no play in it at all

the bolts were put in place and secured with nuts then welded solid and the nuts removed

at this point i start trimming the seat , i used a 4 1/2" angle grinder with a 36grit sanding disc
I DO NOT RECOMMEND TRYING THIS UNLESS YOU ARE SEASONED WITH AN ANGLE GRINDER
the seat foam will "grab" the grinder , it's quite dangerous. i wouldn't do it but i gotta make due with what i have
here is a early shot of the seat

and another

now its starting to look like something

i really wanted to send my seat off to have it covered, but it was too pricey (too many zeros for me) so the plan was to do it myself untill i can afford have it redone.
i even used the same piece of leather, the top of the seat was covered with contact cement. pulled the leather tight, and used high strenth glue for the backing , it's not perfect but it's pretty damn good
sorry the photo's so crappy

should have made the seat first

ok so fixing this is not as hard as you would think,if you know what your doing

some marker lines

more round bar

like it never happened

ok there is lots more to this thread but i'm sick of typeing for now
i'll get to the rest of later , this is only half way to the end

thanx for the comments ,PT you can count on seeing this thing around..
i got a little recharge sooo... on with the show

so with the changes to the seat , i moved on to the tank .since the tank was not really "custom" it was just covered with fabric.. so i had the idea to carry the round bar over to the tank ..(now it gets cool)

so i wanted to use a K model tank because i want one of those gas gauges i've seen on ebay (anybody got one hint hint)

the idea was to do knee dents that were the length of the tank, with a round bar "eyebrow" to accent the dish ,

the start

to all of you who sell parts on ebay, if your gonna sell a tank ... clean ALL the molasses out first (what a pain)

here is were i put the round bar , i thought i snaped a picture of it on there before the dents, but i didn't

i knew i was going to be doing alot of bondoing to get the "eyebrow" to look right . so i wasn't as carefull as i could have been with the hammering

my boss once told me that i have a good eye for seeing what the end result will be, knowing it will look good when its done, eventhough it looks like #$%* right now.
there is alot of that going on here

i seem to have lost/deleted the during the bondoing shots, sorry.  but i move on

ooooooooooooweeee  that is lookin sweet . at this point i'm starting to get exited

"lots more work to do spikey stay focused"

you may be thinking this is alot of work for such a short time ...well it is ( i wasn't working for most of it )

so i was getting real sick of sanding bondo (if you've done it you know what i mean) so to break the tention i moved on to something else (i jump around alot, it keeps me from getting "builders block")

i wanted a drilled rotor to accent the drilled drum.
i used a degree wheel to mark the rotor every 10 degrees, and divided the width by 4 and thats how i got the pattern

turned out really good

mounted that up real quick,

now back to the tank, did a bunch more sanding and some painting

now go back to that drunken drawing and compare to this

this is how the bike sits today , i'm gonna put on some drag bars asap.
i have to take a break from the garage (gotta keep the woman happy, she comes in handy)

thanx . i worked really hard on it. i wanted to get it done while the ideas were still fresh in my head.

i haven't decided if i'm gonna put the leopard on the tank,  my oringial idea was to put it in the dishes but they came out so nice now i dont know if i should. but at the same time it has to tie together with the rest of the bike, ....and i swore i wouldn't got out to the garage for at least a week

i think i just broke some sort of record for most modding done in 7 days (i didn't sleep much)

I love the detail of the eyebrow on the tank and how it separates from the dish at the front of the tank. Makes it look really really trick. Nice job.

**Edit**
I just played around with Photoshop a bit and have to say that the leopard print must go back on the new tank, but not the whole think. It looked best either with print on the top, leaving the dishes alone, or vise versa. Just my opinion, but, I've always liked that bike. (Seat looks great!!)

Hey spikey,

What if you did a leopard racing stripe down the top of the tank?  That would tie the theme in well.

Spikey,

You do awesome work.  To the point where I really like the leopard print!  I agree with mkramer's take on the tank.  If you cover the dishes, they will get lost in the leopard pattern.  I think you should scheme up the dishes like the P-40's of the Flying Tigers from WWII and see if that could work into the design.  Either that or work with those cool looking eyebrows and do some intense looking "hunting eyes".  I have no idea what that means, but it is the best I can describe....

Great work!!!!

Hmmm........ i think i'll give the stripe a shot , just because it seems to not interfear (sp?) with the lines of the tank.  i just hope it looks ok with the off-center gas cap ...... my girl is gonna have to deal with it ..... i know ,i'll just bring the tank in the house. then i keep my word   ;D ;)

You could place the stripe off-center like you see on old muscle cars.  Or, instead of a stripe, do a tear-drop shape.

Man, that tank work came out great! The little character lines in the front really are a tasteful detail. I think the new seat design is a BIG improvement too. :D

I'm probably in the minority on this one and it would certainly be a drastic change, but have you thought about maybe doing away with the leopard theme completely? That tank looks soooo good in paint; I can only imagine how cool the whole bike would look with a little bit of the WWII fighter paintjob mentioned earlier! Just an opinion... ;)

so i was out in garage last night mocking up the raceing stripe idea.  and i dont really care for it at all, but i made it removeable so i could look at the pics and maybe it will grow on me

its a very thin gauge aluminium and spary adhisive

to me its kinda like mounting a 3kt diamond mounted in a peice of tin foil, (well maybe not that severe, but you get the point)
