Deer gets me
« on: September 22, 2008, 04:28:43 PM »
Yesterday about 6pm I'm rounding a left hand twisty right after the left hander.
That's is I think I was in the second one. Anyway a deer jumped the guardrail and right in my path.
That's what I think I saw but this was at speed. So, I didn't even have time to touch the brakes, but for
split second I thought I'd miss him. Nope, then for  a split second I thought I might actually get lucky and
catch the tank slapper, nope. Then the high side. I'm pretty sure I cleared the deer.
I don't remember the slide, my buddy said the bike tagged me as I was rolling before ending up in
a back slide. I ended up face up and pretty addled. The helmet shows a hard impact on the back and
road rash all around it so I know I rolled. The jacket, pants, and boots did their job. The jacket was my
new FieldShier Airspeed 4 perforated. It tore one of the shoulders open but the armor held, the back shows a pretty
good slide, I was told about 75 yards.

I broke my tibia just below my knee and their saying 3 months to heal completely. I suspect it's going to be hard to cut
timber on crutches, not to mention finishing my house project (ok this might be doable).

The duck is back at the house and I suspect the insurance company will total it. I had full coverage with
a stated amount.

Thanks Fuzz, the fellow I was riding with is an EMT and he wouldn't let me up,
I asked about the bike and he said it was only bad on one side.  ;)

Your right of course, there are lots of bikes out there. I think I'll buy this one
back from the insurance company and make a naked or near naked bike out of it.

It does still run.

Sh1t Rob, glad your still with us. I was only talking to my Brother on Saturday who had visited your area, he said you couldn't hardly move on the roads round there for dear. Shame about the Duc but like Fuzzy said you can replace that, someone must have been looking over you. Will you still be able to get to Piedmont on them there crutches ?  :D :D :D :D Take care buddie.

Glad to hear you made it out alive.  Good on you for wearing your armor.

I had a close call with a fawn at night once, it was there and gone in a split second, I was past it before I could properly absorb what I was seeing.  Just a freeze-frame in the headlights.  Very scary.

Don't push yourself too hard while healing, do keep up with your PT.  Hope you're up and around soon.

cheers

Glad you don't seem too fazed by the event. Hope you heal easily and quickly.
Sounds like there was nothing you could have done, just fickle finger of fate stuff.
Hope to hear your getting back on the bike tale soon,
Ben

Tough Man tough, but think about it when boredom drives you round the bend, think how do I do it without hurting myself and you'll do more than you think you can.

Dude- please tell us the deer bought it.  Too often they get away without a scratch.

Sorry 'bout the crash Rob!  Good thing you got off with the broken leg.  I am sorry about how that will complicate your livelihood.

I'm real glad you had all the gear on for this one.  ;)

Rocking-M, like has been said, sure glad you're still with us too!
That could have been really drastic! :(

Are you having venison for dinner?

mmmm, or venison lasagna....

Glad to hear you are in repairable shape! Oh and as far as the bike goes, negotiate! Try and get them to give you the amount just below totalling it so you can keep it with a clean title and not have to buy it back. That's what I did with my 748 and it worked out great!

Thanks all, I don't know what happened to the deer, my emt buddy would let me get up to
go and shoot it.  ;D I did give it a good wack in the rear so I hope it wandered off and died a slow death. ;)

I don't know how to go about the recovery stuff so today, I had the son back the flat bed against the tractor
and I got on it had raked some hay, I can drive it with one leg and the other sticking straight out  ;D
whilst racking hay at 12 noon (when deer aren't suppose to be out low and behold there were two in the
pasture. When I came back around the wife got me the rifle. There is one less now.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I have a personal vendetta now and a life mission, to put the deer population back into balance.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hey Sam, I plan to make it, the wife will drive of course.  ;D ;D ;D
