Coffee
« on: June 21, 2009, 06:00:12 PM »
Ok, I have to admit it, lately I have not felt like riding much.
Don't have much $, as I 'm laid off again and the
rain has been constant.

SO, I've been drinking lots of coffee. Getting sick of Maxwell House.
ANy suggestions for inexpensive coffee?

I know you said you are broke, but i highly recommend a French press.  It makes even crappy coffee taste good.  Easy to use, just boil water on the stove, pour into the container, stir, wait 2-3 minutes, press.   Yummy.

Have you tried Yuban?... it is an "environmentally friendly" coffee, usually in with the large bargain size cans but still 10-12 bucks... I've been finding it at King Soopers (Dillons, Kroger, etc.) for half off on regular occasion.  I buy it every time its on sale... the dark roast is mighty tasty for a "bargain".

I'm a coffee snob  .  I have come to find you don't have to pay 9$ for a bag of good coffee .

Here's a few to try out .      Cafe Goya . Find it in the Latin section in some supermarkets . Ground very fine . Add it in you coffee maker with a dash of cinnamon in the beans prior to brewing and viola . Good stuff .
Another is 8 O'clock Coffee.  I prefer the French Roast myself .
Cafe Aroma is another decent one . Sold as an espresso but I've put it in a normal coffee maker and it comes out great .  Cheap .  Like 2.49 for a 12oz brick.
That's just a few that comes to mind .

Another idea to try out is using light brown sugar instead of regular sugar .  Or even better is putting panela ( hard rock molasses ground up ) in your coffee. The Colombians do it . The call it " Campesino " .

At my job I occasionally end up covering shifts at the coffee bar when somebody doesn't show up.  My favorite form of entertainment on those days is when any man orders some kind of fancy drink, I put a ridiculous amount of whipped cream (sometimes colored pink with strawberry syrup ;D) on top, and then give him a wink as I hand it over the counter. :-* :-* ;D ;D

+1 on the french press.  Coldbrewed coffee is freakin' awesome, too, and tastes a lot smoother than hot brewed.  look up DIY coldbrew coffee.  Takes 8-12 hours for a full frenchpress of cold brew concentrate but then you can put it in a bottle for later and the buzz is kind of excessive.  (I say that and down redbulls way too often)

Hmmm, good and cheap coffee... that's a tough one.

If you're looking to make espresso on the cheap with a steam toy (6 bars of pressure) get yo self a used Krups 871. We have a Starbucks espresso maker and a Krups and find we like the Krups better than the real pump machine. Go figure. They can be had for sub $20 on ebay and never die except for the gasket in the reservoir.

Anyways... coffee. Trader Joe has reasonable whole beans cheap. Most anything will work. Cheaper is usually a little more bitter but you can futz the grind around to compensate. If there's a local coffee shop you like that toasts their own beans that's a good bet too.

Hell, I'd be homeless right now if I had to buy all the iced lattes I drink in a day at a shop  ;D

Well,

I don't know if this will help you at all.  It might stimulate your interest though.

I can't recommend any cheap coffee at all.  Most of them are like using ground sawdust from cheap wood.

Try Christopher Bean's Jamaica Blue Mountain.  It's only $7 to $9 for a bag of ground blend or whole beans which you grind yourself.  100% Arabica....... of course, only part of it is actually Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee....... the rest is a mixture of other 100% Arabica beans........ still is mighty delicious.

Pure Jamaica Blue Mountain must run about $50 to $60 a pound.  But the mixture I describe above is still mighty, mighty good.

Brewed with traditional hot methods, it's great.  Use cold brewing methods, like a Toddy-O cold brew for 12 to 18 hours, it's out of this world.

When I lived in SF, I pretty much made Farley's my office.  Always a good bike show in front, and the baristas were all women who rode and had a lot of good tats.  One day a guy come up and asked for a latte, "...do you have skim milk?"
Instantaneous and total silence struck as every head slowly rotated to see who the dummy was.  A mouse fart would have sounded like a sonic boom as everyone waited.  Finally, the dumb-struck woman behind the counter was able to collect herself and murmered a steady, terse, "No."

Can't help it- life is too short to drink bad coffee.  I pay $27 for 2 1/2 lb of Uncle Ernie's House Blend.

Look no further friendo, "Chock-full-o'-nuts". Like $2 a can, looks like it would be horrible, is actually a wonderful taste treat.

I am a coffee snob for the most part and I agree that french press is the best way to go, but if it is not available, it's all about the c-f-o-n.

Anybody know where you can buy a reasonably priced grinder that does coarse for french press to a fine grind for auto-drip?

http://www.theroasterie.com/coffee/Solis%2DMaestro%2DBurr%2DGrinder/2062/10/1

They want about $170 for the decent one at the Roasterie here in KC, I was wondering if one could find a quality grinder for cheaper than that.

I've found that since I gave up the smokes about 6 years ago, my coffee consumption has been on a steady decline. I used to drink a half pot to a full pot a day when smoking and now I'm down to a few cups every 2-3 months. After quitting the cigs I started to get my sense of smell back, and it got to the point where I could smell my empty cup of coffee (I use sugar & 1/2 & 1/2) sitting on the end table at the other end of the couch. I found it to be a bit unpleasant. ??? Anyway, when I do drink coffee my brand of poisin is Dunkin' Donuts.  :P

I've thought about getting an old school manual grinder for french press, and only using my electric grinder for espresso.  Seems like you should be able to get a lot more control with a manual.

I've got a friend who has a coffee cart and roasts his own beans.  His beans are from a company called Capulin Coffee.  All of the beans are fair trade, organic, shade grown, sun dried, hand picked, and hand processed by a small Indian tribe in the mountains of Mexico.  Anyway, it's the best coffee I've ever had.  I only drink french pressed or espresso coffee and I take it with no cream or sugar, so it's about as black as night.  I don't like to be able to see throught the stream of coffee as it's being poured into the cup.  Drinking it as dark as I do, I've found that other coffees become really bitter or hurt your tummy after a cup or two, but this stuff is sweet, flavorful, and tasty no matter how dark you make it.  You can buy it directly from the company, but it's 18 bucks/pound.  I can get it from my friend for 12 bucks/pound if I roast it myself.

Here is their website.  It's almost comical how militant they are...
