The wife and son went to visit my mother-in-law for the day, so I first went out to the garage and fired up my BMW K1100LT. I've just replaced the front brake lines with braided stainless steel lines from Britain after I discovered a major problem apparently caused by collapsed brake lines, anyway, the good news is that the problem is fixed, and I won't have to worry about my front brakes locking on any more.

I re-torqued Al's head, but I'm buggared if I can refit the cam sprocket, I've got all the slack out of the chain but I just can't get it over the sprocket, anyone got a clue how to do this? I was hoping to have Al's engine finished tonight, but hopefully it'll happen tomorrow now. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I shoveled the snow away from the shed door, went in, lifted the cover off my bike and gazed at it.
Another four months at least until there is any hope of riding again.
How depressing.

I used it in a short film today a friend and I are shooting.
You guys aren't going to believe this.  I had to ride the bike from start to stop maybe 50 feet, throw the kickstand down and hop off the bike.  We shot it once and said lets do it again for the sake of havin the shot.  I did it again except this time about 30 feet in my front tire went squirrely, ended up goin out from underneth.  I wasn't going very fast at all so I was able to hop off and set the bike down fairly soft, well comparably.  Busted my break leaver but I replaced that within a half hour.  Here's the great part.  When we got the bike back up I looked at everyone and said, "that was weird!  Did I hit a patch of oil???"  Buddy of mine points down at the front tire and says, "no you slipped on sh*t!"  Big chunk of dog #$%* was smeared on front tire. :(
Honestly, it was pretty god damn funny.

So I guess today, I replaced my break leaver because of sh*t.
Thanks a lot sh*t. ;D

P.S. Bike is just fine.

you talking about sohc-4 cam & chain??
if so, I could only do it with the 2 sprocket retaining bolts undone, and the sprocket off it's "seat".

I walked by them today and thought I should go for a ride.  But not being able to get them up the snow covered driveway better judgment stopped me.

Had a leaky fork seal on the CX - so thought- why not polish them while I had them off to replace the seals.

Note - I haven't done the seals yet - got carried away polishing..

New seals happening tomorrow...

All I did today was put up my Christmas lights. Well OK, I lied, I dusted off my Christmas lights that have been hanging outside for 8 years now, but regardless, they might be a bit faded but 80% of them still work, so good for one more Christmas, then I'm gonna pull them all down, throw 'em in the trash and buy some new ones at the post Christmas sales, and start again! Merry Christmas men! (and ladies................)  ;D

quiet, Mr. Kelowna... you can take your B.C. winter and shove it. Ha ha!
I'm just bitter I guess. I only get to walk by the snow covered shed where my 750 sits for months.

I installed the new brake lever then finished installing the valves in Al's head, and torqued it down. Today I'll loosen everything off again and re-torque it, and finish assembling the engine so Al can put it under his Christmas tree, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks Santa!!!!!

Took the 750f for its maiden voyage.(put 4/10 of a mile on sat). Forgot camera but really wanted to ride it some. Had church and presents to wrap so I missed the toys for tots run at 11. Finally got out at 3:30 for a 26 mile ride at 45-60 mph. Taking it easy as its new to me got it up to 80 once. Real smooth down low and the little I did check 5>8k had me smiling. Still needs more tune up items. Played with my road rider air fork system. Clueless about it. It has a pressure guage and a small hose connecting r/l fork. I have 6lbs in it now but rode today with 10. Thats all folks.

I sold it to a person who will care for it.  :(   I did not have the heart to cut the frame up for a drag bike............. she is a very pretty classic, would have been a shame to rework such a perfect condition bike.

Yeah, I worked that day, but I had to go home early, because the insulation on our wires was cracking. That was effing cold.

Actually I did this step of reassembly a week ago and posted the progress today.

Finally had some time to do some work and  download photos  and post.

Thing went pretty smoothly, pre-assembly is always a good way to make sure things are going to go together without a hitch. I used yamabond to seal the gasket surfaces and used the old gaskets because they were still in good shape. Yamabond is highly recommend product, and it was available at the shop. I have been told that people run and race using yamabond without a gasket. Not that I'd want to try that myself, but it is a way to get a bit more compression as it squishes down to virtually nothing, but seals good.

Slowly but surely the parts are coming out of the box and becoming a unit.

I kept all the stuff in bags to keep it clean while waiting for assembly, including the motor.

The rings are supposed to be installed with the gaps of each at 120' around the piston. The manual also says do not align any ring gap in line with the wrist pin nor perpendicular to the wrist pin. This was hard to image in a  photograph, and hard to be precise once the bores are going on , but an effort was made to pre-position it all in that configuration.
After  first fit of the bores I put about a cap full of oil down the bores, pouring it down the back side first and making sure a bit works it's way around.

With the inner pistons at top dead center the bores are lowered into place.

A bit of wiggling and using my fingers and or a very  small screw driver to compress the rings and it begins to lower onto the cylinders. No forcing things. A bit if rocking from side to side and they work their way in.

Some posts suggest that using hose clamps to compress rings is the way to do it.  I think this sounds like an unnecessesary pain in the butt. It seems that with the small amount of space, it would be just an added hassle. The bores are tapered quite enough that you can tuck the rings in if you are patient. I don't see how the use of any type ring compressor would be of help unless you are assembling something through the top of the bore. This is just not a situation where it would make assembly any easier.

At this point I made sure to insert any  alignment dowels necessesary.

I temporarily put a wire  through the chain  to take up slack  and hold it out of the way.   After the inner two bores were in, I spun the motor just a bit to bring the outer pistons up and simultaneously feed them into the bores.  Again  patience and no forcing things. Once they were working their way  in, the surface of the top of the motor case was given a thin coat of yamabond.

After the bores are lowered in place , I used some spacers to take up the space of the head and tightened  down three nuts  enough to seat the bores and squish out the excess yamabond. There was not much, but a bit confirms that the surfaces are being squeezed together. I let this sit overnight before doing anything more. The recommended torque when the head is on should make a very good seal that will last.

SORRY ABOUT THE KILTERED PHOTOS. FOR SOME REASON THEY DON'T POST THE WAY I ROTATED THEM ON PHOTOBUCKET.

poor boi-

it is highly recommended that you not use any sealer on the head gasket. many an engine has seen oil-starvation death from excess yamabond, hondabond, threebond, whatever ending up in the oil supply and blocking off the oil jets to the top end. i have personally autopsied an engine in this state, the inner cup of the oil jet being filled with bits of sealer.

it might be fine, but be warned: it's a bad idea.
