"tink tink tink" when off the throttle
« on: November 11, 2009, 01:16:07 pm »
Hey guys,

Just a quick question that I hope has a quick answer. When I let off of the throttle I get a nice "tink tink" sound until I come to a stop or get back on the throttle. Doesn't seem to go away with the clutch in, or maybe I just didn't keep track of it well enough.

Thanks for any ideas, I was thinking maybe the primary chain? New cam chain + tensioner which are adjusted, full tune up and all that.

Let me ride her tomorrow and give some better details. I've been off the bike for over a month and just got around to fixing my exhaust and it was still there (so no, I don't think my exhaust is loose  :P) when I rode it the other day.

Either way it happens when I let off of the throttle at speed coming up to a red light, line of traffic or what have you. Everything from 30-60 mph. Anyway I'll play with the bike a little tomorrow and give more solid information as I'm going off of memory, I wish I had a good way to capture audio...

My first thought was the primary chain to loose. Check that and just continue to check stuff to rule things out. Then adjust the cam chain and keep moving on until you find it. Do you hear the sound with the bike on the center stand?

Something like that is my bet.  Usually when its way too loose and/or the interface with the drive sprocket is really worn. It hooks up uner load, gets funky when not under load.

Is the primary chain even an issue? Not familiar with 550s, but it wouldn't be on a 750. Can't even get at it and if terribly worn you wouldn't hear anything but a louder rattle.

It doesn't go away with the clutch in, and it sounds like it's coming from the brake caliper/front wheel assembly.

Have you checked the drive chain slack while turning the rear wheel wheel.  Have you adjusted slack for the tightest position?  What is the difference between the tightest and loosest measurement?

chain tapping on the front drive spocket cover?  I think I remember someone having that issue in the last 5 months.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

It doesn't go away with the clutch in, and it sounds like it's coming from the brake caliper/front wheel assembly.

I've had an issue similar to this...
My brake rotor was warped. When cold it would not be pronouced but after getting heated up under use, it would drag pretty bad creating pulsing tink/sqeak/thud noises.

Does it get worse after you drive it for awhile and grab the brake?

New bearings.

I check my chain tension every other ride. It's good, promise ;).

chain tapping on the front drive spocket cover?  I think I remember someone having that issue in the last 5 months.

This may be a possibility because after  (see above) checking my tension before the test ride I noticed I lost a bolt on my chain guard, but I couldn't find a replacement. It doesn't seem to be coming from the rear. After standing on the pegs and putting my head towards the front wheel assembly, I am further convinced it's coming from the front end.

It doesn't go away with the clutch in, and it sounds like it's coming from the brake caliper/front wheel assembly.

I've actually experimented with this as well. Between positively no brake use and a cold rotor and normal brake use it doesn't seem to change.

I think I'll be checking the entire front end assembly over now that the weather has cooled and I'll replace the bolt on the chain guard (but I really don't think that was it, as I did have that bolt last I checked the chain tension and the noise was present then). Aside from that I'll check the primary chain when I drain the oil (I need a new seal on the oil pan anyway).

If anybody has any other ideas I'd appreciate them, I really am scratching my head over this noise considering everything I've done to the bike so far.

Still think it's chain against mainstand...when you check the chain tension the bike is most likely on the mainstand, try it on the side-stand and see how close the chain is to the m/s when it's in it's ' up ' position....

Yes that's the most likely culprit IMM, especially if the exhaust has been modified. Often the little tab that's used to hold the stand down from the chain gets bent or deflected allowing the chain to drag on it.

Or not...

+1
This happened to me shortly after I got my bike. Sounds like exactly the same thing.
One thing I have learnt recently - when you hear a noise - start at the simple stuff or you'll bugger about trying to find a more complicated problem...then come back to the simple thing...
