Just opened my mail today to find that my insurance premium for my '76 CB550 went from roughly $300 dollars up to $2,800.00 per year effective immediately. I figured it had to be a typo as there was no recent change in my license status/driving/accident history and called to see what the error was.

The answer I got was far from expected and I figured i'd pass on the info in case it's of use to anyone else having to make a decision as to post an insurance claim for a hit and run or pony up the cash for minor repairs on one's own.

A bit of backstory:

My bike was hit while parked in November, and after working with my claims adjuster, I was offered a settlement of around 1400.00. They declared the bike a total loss as it would cost more in parts and labor to repair than replace the bike in the eyes of the insurance company. I was told accepting their offer would not effect the status of the title or my rates moving fwd since it was a non moving accident that I had no involvement in.

It was my choice to repair the bike on my own with the alloted money, the bike being declared a total loss, or to accept a few hundred more, forfeit the bike to a salvage company, and find a new bike.

I decided on a rebuild over the winter and am around 95% done with the project. A little paint, carb reassembly, new chain, and a tune up and she's ready to go.

Here's a link to the rebuild and progress reports:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=62368.0

I just got off the phone with an insurance agent who informed me if I'd like to continue my policy with Geico, my rate for the same amount of coverage would be close to 3000 a year as the company now has my bike recorded as a total loss vehicle.

Had I known making a claim and receiving a meager payout would have resulted in the most rediculous premium hike I've ever experienced, I surely would have opted to part the bike out or at least reconsidered investing another 1500 on the rebuild.

I'm not to sure anyone in their right mind would accept a 1400.00 payout only to turn around and give the insurance company twice that amount each year to cover said bike. Really wish I'd have had more info in writing from the claims adjuster while going through the process of reporting the damage and settling on the claim. Live and learn I suppose....

Looks like my options now are to move everything over to the 72 CB500 frame I just picked up or see how things go with the new insurance carrier I just signed with. Their quote for my 68 CB450 and 76 CB550 was quite reasonable- just hoping nothing comes back when they verify the title info on the 550. We'll see how it goes.

Hey DKB -- Interesting stuff. Are you saying that your previous $300 a year was to protect the bike itself in addition to liability? I have progressive, costs me a little less than $300 a year, but that's for liability only. I wasn't aware that insurance companies would even cover these bikes for anything more than liablity,  given that they see them as having little or no value.

Try a quote from progressive and see what they say. $2800 a year would be an insane bill to have to pay for motorcycle insurance.

Yep- my previous policy with Geico included comprehensive along with liability for under 300 a year total. My deductible was $250 and they go by the Blue Book Value of the bike when addressing claims (not much help on our old bikes). I was able to provide a bunch of documentation of bikes in similiar shape to mine and get a bit more than their assigned value on the payout. That being said- I'd of just purchased the needed replacement parts on my own and dropped the comprehensive coverage alltogether had I known what I was getting into...

*My new policy with Progressive has an advance agreed upon value for each of my bikes. It only adds a hundred bucks or so per year to cover the bikes themselves. Don't think I'll be making any claims for items I can fix on my own in the future but figure it's worth having the coverage in the event of theft / fire/ etc...

+1.  $85 for me from Progressive.  Bare bones coverage though for sure.  Hell, they probably wouldn't even send an ambualnce for my $85 a year...

Bare bones coverage in Ontario Canada is now about 700 $/year.  This with a perfect record.

This is killing motorcycle use in Ontario, and that is likely the province's deliberate plan.  The manufacturers just go into hiding and are uninvolved in their own future.  When dealers close, and jobs disappear in this industry, we will move into a poorer situation.  But so it goes.

My only temporary countermeasure is smaller and smaller displacement bikes.  Insurance beaters that still allow us to ride.

Canada is off of it's #$%*ing rocker!  :o

I pay around 500 per year for FULL coverage on my 2004 BMW R1100S and let's just say I don't have a perfect record.

The only way I would ever consider full coverage on a CB bike is if it was a mint condition sandcast 750.
I have a 1970 CB350 SS, 1988 NT650(Hawk GT), 2004 BMW R1100S

I live in the bustling metropolis of Saskatoon in Canada and pay a bit over $100 for the year for my old 550.  Anything older than 30 years can be plated as an antique and is cheap to plate....however, unless you pay to get it appraised and buy extra insurance you get squat if you smash it.
Regular bike rates have jumped a lot over the past year because of all the young crotch rocket driving retards that smear themselves on the guard rails around the province.  Guess they have to pay for more shovels to scoop whats left of them into the garbage bag.

I have 2 bikes at the "classic rate" here in Canada. Around $100.00 per year.

Increases arise from the other 2 which are no longer stock. Just did the 836 Tracy last week and it was $350.00+ for 7 months......
That is basic liability only. I figure if I have an accident bad enough to need collision, it won't be me rebuilding the bike ::)

I think it sucks that you were insured and are now in the position of rationalizing your decision to rebuild the bike?
Is there no way around this seemingly arbitrary conclusion?

I did a lot of research and believe I found the cheapest bike insurance in Texas.  I live in Austin,Texas and I have two vintage bikes insured with minimum insurance.  I pay $79/ year total for both bikes.  My insurance is through BALL INSURANCE, and their number is (800)460-7014.

I'm sure it is cheap comprehensive until the minute you file a claim, makes perfect sense to me.  :)

I have insurance for my '77 750k through progressive. I have a decent policy with the smallest available deductible (didn't cost a penny more for a higher/no deductible) for $77 a year. I live in NY (upstate) so I'm sure an NYC resident would pay a bit more but $3000 is ridiculous.

I'd be finding a new insurance company ASAP. Good luck, man.
BTW the bikes looking GREAT!

I have great luck with State Farm. Full coverage ( yes including collision and comprehensive ) on any and all of my bikes from a ZX12R to a mint 400F is less than $200 per 12 month cycle. I switched after both progressive and Geico started jerking me around 6 years ago and have NEVER looked back.
Good luck.
