Topic: Bill Hirsch Tank Liner Failure

I was filling up the bike with gas tonight and as I peered inside the tank...disaster.  A large section of the liner had peeled away from the tank.  I couldn't tell if the liner had torn or ruptured or if it remained intact and seperated from the wall.  I rushed home, removed the tank and drained the gas.  Now it appears that the entire side of the tank liner has seperated.  I don't know what to do.  I researched the hell out of which liner to use and took every precaution to apply it correctly to the virgin fiberglass tank.  What do I do?  Forget about it?  Try and pull it out and just use as is?  Tear it out and reline it with the same stuff?  POR-15?

Sounds like you are into stuff that I am not,Fiber tanks and all but when a "film" failure happens like inside your tank I would say it all has to come out somehow.metal is kinda easy,hit it with some strip. But the seal is broken.   RED-KOTE ? Gotta love the color

yeah, that's what I would say, too. Strip it all out and coat with redcote (granted, you say you did your homework on which liner to use, and I am assuming you chose not to use redcote for a reason?).

That's too bad, it is the one Benjie recommends for his tanks.

Benjie recommends POR-15 but the company told me that it will not stick to fiberglass and I would likely encounter problems.  The Bill Hirsch stuff was the only stuff I am aware of that is designed and recommended for fiberglass tanks.

So if I were to strip it, what would be the best way to avoid damage to the fiberglass as well?

I don't know what material you applied........I do know that Red Kote works for 2 or more years and then should have a re-application of a single coat just to make sure the tank remains sealed.

I was told the exact opposite when I called and asked to be transferred to the shop and asked about the fiberglass tank on my Tracy body.  I used POR-15 and it is holding up fine so far?
