Get a copy of Consumer Reports.

Consumer reports deosn't tell you how well they hold up after 100,000 miles. Plus Huffy Bikes got the thumbs up from CR doesn't that tell you something?

And neither does a smattering of "Yeah dude it totally lasted a long time" posts.

Then the problem is with your perception. While all of the replies may appear helpful, they provide no solid data as to the actual reliability of the vehicles in question. All you get are cute stories of personal experiences colored by bias, preconceived notions, and prejudice.

Okay, here's a stat.  And forgive me if I don't have the exact quote.  But it used to be in the fine print of GM (and Chevy) ads.  It basically says that there are more old GM trucks on the road since somewhere around the forties.  And I'm sure they were referring to percentages, as Ford has been selling trucks longer

As opposed to Ford's "best selling truck", which when you look at that closely, it (at least to me) says that Ford is real good at selling you on whatever they say.  "best selling" really is a reflection on the sales staff than the truck itself.

What about when an "American" car company produces more units and parts outside of "America"?

That's what I'm getting at.

And the money comes back to the U.S.  It's all about the balance of trade.

I used to get real pleasure in telling Harley owners that there are more Japanese parts on a Harley than on today's Gold Wing.  And to that, the one good thing AMF did for Harley was to start using Japanese electrics.  It made Harleys more reliable.

Yes, the Fords make it home at night. :D

I'd be hesitant to form any conclusions based on a vague recollection of an ad, it's likely to be based more on bias than fact.

I've always found the "Best Selling" statistic a bit misleading, as they separate GMC and Chevy trucks. If you add the sales of GMC and Chevy together, there are years where it'd be more than Ford.

ford, found on road dead. ford backwards, driver returns on foot.
Anyways, consumer reports is not that bad. Not sure why huffy would be bad as they can take one hell of a beating. World class bikes? No but meant to be ridden hard with no concern for top notch shocks or other junk! ;)

The suggestion of forums is a good idea. Think about it. Why did you come here? Help and info for your bike. Do the same for the truck you want to buy.

I'm only vague about the exact quote.  I'm extremely sure of the meaning of the quote.  I'm very keen on reading whatever a company says about their products.  Take, for example, one of the Korean auto makers claim(I can't remember who, exactly).  They claim to have "America's Best Warranty", quotation marks and all.  The catch is that they've copy-righted that exact phrase, so even if they had the worst warranty, they can call it the America's Best Warranty", and they get away with it.

bull #$%* Lameass.

I offered some good reasons for an older chevy, the transmission, engine, and transfer case are bullet proof.
Why do you think lots of four wheelers convert to these old trannys, transfers and engines?

and for you folks info. the 5 speed found nowadays in the dodge and chevy 3/4 ton, and tons, the NV4500 is the same,
just a longer input shaft when connected to the cummings. I've converted my old 3/4 ton to the new 5 speed and hate it.
Not near the tranny the granny 4 speed was and is.

All that said, I think someone pointed out they all need maintenance.
I've had and wrung the daylights out of lots of stuff. I prefer something that
is easy to find parts for. Chevy stuck with pretty much the same parts for many many years so
parts interchange between models is much easier than other makers. (so I've been told, I've own
2 fords long long ago and found this to be true, and my father in law was a dodge man and I had to
work on his dodges from time to time) But, if your comfortable working on another brand go
for it, they all need work eventually.

BTW, I'm a logger, loggers break more #$%* in a week than most folks break in a life time.

Ok I am going to say it.....Laminar you are a #$%*in argumentative idiot.....

What people have here experienced with their vehicles is completely relevant, your ridiculous perception is not.
We obviously know a hell of a lot more about the mechanicals of any given vehicle than you do and for your information , consumer reports aren't worth the paper they are written on. They are usually based mainly on complaints by people that don't have a practical bone in their body.....#$%* off and come back when you have something positive to add.......Moron...

Thanks mate, i just hate guys that come out and throw road blocks simply because they can, his arguments are just that and have no relevance what so ever. Most guys here are hands on and small problems with any thing mechanical really isn't a problem and if Laminar had read any consumer reports he would know that they are full of things like " the cigarette lighter is crap" and the "plastic ash tray front panel broke" and trivial #$%* like that. Here we are getting good reports from guys that know their #$%* and are more useful than "consumer reports" . My 82 bronco has lots of small faults but as a strong 4 wheel drive, dana and 9 inch diffs, top loader gearbox and so on it is a bloody strong truck and has been a good vehicle for me for over 10 years, yes lots of small things have needed fixing but the integrity of the vehicle in general has been good....But i know that my opinion based on personal experience is useless because Laminar says so...... ::)

Oh Jesus.  Here we go.  Retro is the best!

To clarify it for you Laminar, I don't expect to find hard numerical data from a motorcycle forum but if it were to materialize, I wouldn't be surprised.  I welcome the input of anyone who wants to tell me of his or her experiences with American trucks.  I am looking for recommendations in any form, be it from some burnt out stoner saying "Duuude, those are totally #$%*ing awesome" or, from an industry professional telling me the specific weakness of each vehicle from his or her own personal experience.  I trust some of the people on this forum and respect their opinions based on the input they've given on many different subjects in the past.  There are faithful members here who have a lot to say that I want to listen to.  That being said, Laminar, go poke a hole with your bull#$%*.  Anybody has a right to post what they want regarding an answer to my original question.  Your intentions are unclear, but what is clear is that you do not have anything to offer regarding the topic.  If you want to be #$%*y, start your own thread and title it "I want to be a #$%* to people".  I'm sure that you will get plenty of response from plenty of people who want your abuse.  I'm really impressed that you feel that you have the authority to tell an entire group of people what they are not doing correctly.  There's a word for that and it's called megalomania.

Go poke a hole with it.
Yep, a guy named cupcake just handed you your own ass!  Suck it!

Carry on, gents.

Do the right thing, buy the Toyota!

By the way, they are made in the USA now [San Antonio].

I am on my fourth, and would not even consider another brand. I drive a lot for business and buy a new truck every 2-3 years.

Your 4th Toyota Truck?
I've had my F-150 since new in 1997, never really thought about a replacement. Bought some new tires and brakes this year ;) :)
Yes, I've 2 Tundras and 2 Tacomas over the last 11 years.  I'm a commercial property manager and drive a lot. I get paid 50 cents a mile, which covers fuel and most of the note, so I trade every 2-3 years, when they hit 130,000 miles or so. Then I don't have to deal with major maint like timing belt replacement and I have not given one a brake job! Recently got a V-6 Tacoma w/automatic, it gets 20 MPG!
[The V-8 Tundra w/big wheels & tires I dumped 2 years ago only got 13 MPG].
'74 "Big Bang" Honda 750K [836].....'76 Honda 550F.....K3 Park Racer!......and a Bomber!............plus plus plus.........
