Really, I would think that after a 4-day drive to the Grand National Roadster Show, setting up a booth, tending it for a week, probably walking around for miles and miles admiring the other exhibits with mouth agape, and then taking another grueling 4 or 5 days to drive back home (towing a trailer through the worst storm seen in the US midwest in the last 20 years) and most likely arriving home just yesterday in the dark and stormy night that you'd be out there in the sub-zero temperatures this morning (hopefully before daybreak) jumping right back on this.  What are you, some kind of slacker?   ::)

Been up since 7AM, and sent out emails re paint, and engine up grades.  Also checked out the up coming show schedule closer to home.  Next on the list for today is to have the trailer checked over, unload the bike, and get the truck serviced.  Oh yeah, I also have a therapy appointment for this afternoon. ;) :)

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

No, mine involved a visit to an establishment that doesn't have a bar.  Will if you don't include the 'Tims'.  Went well, but of course I've had lots of time to be doing exercises. ;)  ;D

How was the trip back?

I mainly had dry roads, and clears skies, both ways. :)  But there was light snow going over the summit (10Kft) both ways.  Didn't see much of the scenery in the Rockies. :o  The last bit of the climb was a bit testing.  When the air gets that thin, engines don't make the power you think.  However, the decent got my attention. ;D  There were also some places through northern Arizona with 6% grades, and canyon turns.  Now I really like corners, but not pulling a trailer, and never having driven anything like it!  That said, having driven it, I'd do it again. :)  The truck would need a slight upgrade.  Brakes were actually quite good, but you can never really have too much. ;)  I hear you could get the Hummer with a turbo I5.  Should drop right into the Colorado. ;) :)  Trailer was great, it cruised part of Nevada @ 80mph+ (were allowed!). ;D ;D ::)  Got Lucky on the return.  Everything was outside the storm up to about Lexington Nebraska.  From there to Priceton IL the roads started to get your attention, but the sky was basically clear.  That's were I hit the black ice. :o, and got off and stopped that night. :)  From there to just into Indiana the roads were fine.  Looked like they got the double hit of snow then freezing rain.  There was about 10 miles were traffic was down to 15 / 25mph.  You got ABS the moment you touched the brakes. :)  After that, it was head for the border, and home. ;D ;D  The whole trip was a blast! :D :D

The bike was 2nd in class Paul, to Chris' West Cooley Yoshi Suzuki replica.

The blue stacks I had hoped to have for the show, were here waiting when I got home. ::)   Most of the time post works, not this time. >:(

Some pictures of the new 550 stacks fitted to a polished back plate.  I'll be putting them into the engraved back plate Frankenstuff made, as some as I get a chance. ;) :)

The photo prompts the mind to wander.  In anticipation of having the back plate powder coated I was stuck to wonder how flexible the boots are and how susceptible they might be to tearing.  My guess is that they are as indestructible as bowling balls but if care is warranted its best to know early.  Oh,and are the screw holes threaded?

G'Day Guys, sorry I haven't posted any results so far, we've had extremes of weather here in Oz over the last couple of weeks, temps in the 100's last weekend, and extensive flooding over the last two days.

My house backs on to a park with a storm water channel running thru it, and for the first time in 10 years, at 8am yesterday with almost 4 inches of rain overnight, I was worried that my house and garage might have been inundated, but luckily, it subsided after a few hours. It literally rose and fell 6 feet in a matter of hours, scary stuff.

The sun is out today though, so I'll try to get out and get some miles up on my K1, and report back ASAP. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hey Kong, don't let it wander to far....but to answer your questions.

I install them from the air side / carb end 1st.  They go in dry OK, but a very small amount of dish sop makes it easier to align them.  The button Allen bolts thread into Rivet nuts in the filter frame.  Those are the 4 bulges in the frame you see from the underside.

As for the technical part, I have this regarding the material.  Not sure what it all means, just that they seem to be as strong, as stock ones.  Also more pliable, with gives a great seal to the back plate.

Well in between showers I did get out for a short-ish ride today, I had to do an oil and filter change and install a Dyna S ignition and some other work on the blue K2 first, but I got away for a 50-odd mile ride on my "hot rod" 836cc K1 this afternoon.

With the anti-pod installed, there is a little more intake noise than a stock airbox when you blip the throttle at standstill, (not unlike pods) but you don't notice this at all when on the move. I didn't notice any difference in performance from the stock airbox as far as accelleration goes, (which is a lot smoother than my previous experience with pods, which was awful) although I'm thinking I'll up the main jets from the current 120's to a set of 132.5's that I've got sitting in my garage. (if I had some 125's and 130's I'd up them incrementally, but sadly I don't, but I think I'll need to go up to at least the 132.5's or bigger anyway)

Don't get me wrong, it was running a little on the lean side before I installed the "AP", but obviously the freer breathing qualities of the AP and the recently installed Yoshimura pipe has exacerbated this condition exponentially. No biggie, it's a 5 minute job to change them, so next weekend I'll swap out the jets and take it for another ride and report back. Apart from that, the AP is beautifully made, very light in weight, and is a very simple job to assemble and it installs easier than the stock airbox, (you can even do it with the sidecovers in place) and is a quality build, thanks to Brian's attention to detail.

Sorry about the lack of pics, I took my camera on the ride, but didn't notice that the battery was as flat as a, er, flat thing. I've recycled an old pic just so you won't accuse me of being slack............  ;D

Thanks for the report Terry.  As I mentioned to RR in an earlier post, I would expect some induction noise.  Sounds like you didn't find it excessive, or objectionable, which was my take when the 550 was running in the shop.  Glad to hear that in 'real life' use under load, your getting a similar result as I am.  No pod induced flat spot(s), just a clean pull.  Given the engine's pipe and displacement increase, upping the jetting was a certainty.  Yeah, it's to bad you don't have the in between jets.  Did you up the slow jets as well, and / or make any needle position change?

Tintop, first let me say you got a great idea on that air filter and boots. Got a question for you. Have you ever seen those air filters like yours that are smaller. Most times they are for two carbs. and have chrome wire mesh basket for the outer, covering the foam? I think they use them on HD and in automotive applications. What would it take or have you ever considered making something like this. Don't get me wrong, what you have is fantastic, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

When do you need to know if we want colored stacks?  I'm considering getting the red ones to match my theme, but if it's too late, no biggie!!

Not to late yet wannabridin.  I'm having a sample stack (550's) in each colour made up.  Those should be ready on shortly (2 weeks?).  Once I post that photo, I will need to know about colour.  At that point the stacks for the existing orders will start to be produced.

Dlhuolton - I know the filters you are speaking about very well.  Just about every MGB's SU's, had them at some point.  They have two inherent problems.  1st their are made from chromed steel, so they are heavy (mine are all alloy, -.75lb.).  2nd, as ffj pointed out they have been around since the 70's (60's?) and were cheap then, and still are.  The filter material is not that great, and difficult to oil properly.  As for a dual filter setup.  I looked at this initially, but there is insufficient space between carbs 2 / 3 to accommodate the required framing.  That said, duals are fesable in a custon straight port manifold design.  This is because this design adds about 20mm between 2 /3.

TinTop, Sorry if my question was not clear, I'm not asking you to make one to feed two carbs. Yours is what I've been looking for. I think yours being able to filter all four carbs. is the way to go. What I was asking is have you considered a "mesh or something" to cover the outer foam filter area like those older style. The picture that was posted only showes up as a box with a red "x" in it. I'm trying to attach a picture, hope it works. I understand that you are working with the company that makes these filters. I remember reading in these post someone asking if the filters would be painted or color changed. I was just intrested to see if someone could come up with the mesh covering to give it that old style look, but keep it in your style (long and narrow) to cover all four carbs. Also I understand the weight issue. What if the "Mesh" were made or molded of plastic or something in the domed shape of the filter that could be chromed or painted to match bike colors. I think the style I'm thinking of is "Ramflo".
