I've been watching your build as well and really enjoy the pics of the bling. You know, once you get the hang of buffing out the parts, it's a lot of fun. Time consuming, but it is winter. Great when someone comes over and mistakes your old aluminum parts for chrome too.

Can you go over how you polish the chrome to look that good?

The very first thing I do is remove the factory clear coat with a product called Aircraft Stripper. Then I use red rouge, green, then finish with white rouge on my Sears bench buffing wheel. Takes time and patience. Some guys will finish with a clear coat, but I do not. I leave it as is and use Semi-Chrome to shine it up whenever it needs it.

Is that the process you use for actual chrome? I know the forks have clear coat but I was referring to the fender etc. Thanks

No, that process is what I use on the aluminum forks and side covers to remove the years of oxidation. That particular fender cleaned up pretty nice. I just used Semi-Chrome on it, but that was a very rare fender to find one in that condition. You can not use the rouge method on existing OEM chrome as 9 our of 10 times you will ruin it. The other bikes I had the fenders chromed by an area plater.

Thanks Johnie. I'll try that color combination on my k1 side covers. I've been starting with black but I'll try and start with red rouge and follow with the rest.

After the white, you ever use the blue/purple rouge? It actually makes the white seem dull. I picked mine up at a metal shop in Brookfield. Guy gave it to me for free after I bought the 3 other ones.

Correct...we are talking strictly buffing the aluminum covers (engine covers). Do not try to buff the plastic side covers or you will ruin them.

I have a bar of the blue here, but did not notice much difference after the white so never use it anymore.

Next week is my goal to finish the build. I am waiting for the side covers and tank from Johnny5. I was going to go all out with the build but once I obtained the 750 things changed. I may actually sell her.

Much thanks goes to member "Nomad" for sending me the 4 exhaust flanges which the PO probably lost. I think it is fantastic how we members take care of each other to keep these vintage bikes on the road. Next week I order my first HM341...as you know I belong to the Pipe of the Month Club here.

Oh, and I got the valves adjusted this week.

Today I got the freshly painted pegs back together. Probably will not put them back on until I get the bike out of the patio. It is easier to get it through the door without them on the bike. Today I will install the copper gaskets and exhaust spigots. Then get ready for the Super Bowl party...

They sell the copper O ring exhaust gaskets and then some sell the stainless crushable O ring.
Copper and aluminum do not galvanically get along with aluminum and on the other side of the copper O ring is the steel exhaust tube, and copper and steel together also is a 30pt. difference on the galvanic scale.

If you have a choice use the stainless O ring.

Well, not to my surprise...get this...got my first HM341 from Honda and there is a nickel sized scratch on the outside....back it goes. Not sure if you remember, but I had numerous HM341's and HM300's I had to send back when I got them from my dealer. Most had dents. They must toss these around at the factory. Got to the point where my dealer looks at them before he calls me. Must cost them some good cash to be shipping these back and forth. For what we pay for these OEM pipes I should not have to accept new products with dents in them. On a positive note I have the gauges back on the bike and the front is pretty much done.
