What is the material for the plate that holds the ignition? The Dyna is aluminum, but it would be nice to isolate the pickups from the engine via a phenolic resin plate that will conduct no heat rather than the stock aluminum one. Could still have small ground straps to each pick up but should help isolate the ignition a little better. The vented cover is a good idea as well but the second enemy of electronics is water, so dealing with that may be an issue in itself.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

What would be awesome, and might do it if there’s any evidence the ignition cover is causing the ignition to be too hot, is to make a little fan that goes on the end of the threaded rod that screws into the crank. Also cut a hole in the front of the cover and holes on the sides for exhaust. Cover the holes with a fine metal mesh. I don’t ride in the rain so that’s not a worry for me.

This is only if removing the cover completely helps cool the system down but only drilling holes doesn’t provide enough air flow.

Just a though while I was on the can.

Undertake it or not. But I would hesitate to assign blame to overheating at this point.

It seems a logical assumption, but it could be a myriad of reasons why it overheated... like have either of these guys inspected the backside of the points cover to determine whether something was rubbing???? Bill Benton just had a Dyna fail during a super hot race weekend, not because of ambient heat, but due to friction. It only manifested itself because it was super hot outside also.

If memory serves, the 650 C5 was a recent addition to Paul's product line-up when these were bought. I doubt the coils are heat susceptible, because they appear to be like his older units, and not the newer type. Those other units were in use for many years without reported, regular failure. Just saying...

But, if I were to attempt to ascertain the issue, I'd ride as is until it failed. Then, remove the cover, and see if it fails again. If not, then, you're on the right trail. Obviously a digital thermo in the pocket to take a cover reading, a plate reading and a block reading at the point of failure would be helpful.

It would also be extremely helpful to get some voltage readings when it fails. Is there a drop in VDC at the coils, is there a resistance build-up, etc? See where I am going?

If you do make a ventilated cover, few, small holes in the upper/leading half would be all I'd make, but I would create a drain "slot" in the bottom for any moisture that might infiltrate to escape after riding, or standing still. Adding rain to electronics is the 2nd worst idea after heat  :)

I agree and I’ve been saying all along that it only seems like heat is the issue because of my experience and now Cam’s experience. Last summer when I was experiencing it, I only looked at the volt meter on the Chronoclassic and there was no change at all. I did not check voltages directly at the coils during it shutting down on me. It’s also definitely not rubbing on anything.

But yes, more testing is needed. I just need to get my bike back in service, so for now, it’s on Cam’s shoulders and the extremely well known desert-like climate of Buffalo New York.

I've ordered a big puck of acetal delrin plastic, enough to make 2-3 prototypes. I'll post some pics here when I start playing around, I'm sure cameron would volunteer to test it out since my motor isn't even assembled yet.

Nope, don’t need it any time soon. You can hold on to it until you get the motor running to make sure it’s all good if you want.

Sorry to hear you've been having trouble with the ignition. Curious did you use suppression core spark plug wires with the new coils, or have to change to spark plugs /resistor values from stock?

The C5 ignition comes with its own wires and coils. We are still trying to figure out and diagnose the issue as of now, but all signs are seem to be pointing to ignition related. This could just be a design flaw with the bike itself and is causing the issue Dave and I have encountered. We need more testing to really pin point the problem.
Ive been riding the hell out of this bike and have only had this issue once.

Update.
Tons more seat time no issue at all. Ambient riding temps below 80 degrees. Oil cooler parts have arrived and I’ll be venting the cover on install.
