Practiced my welding with a custom cup holder up by the bars, what do you guys think?

Hah, yeah right.

Shined up some old shocks. Here’s a little before and after, this’ll do for now.

Needed room in my work space to finish up the engine so after freshening up and reassembling the forks I put some of the 650 together to roll out and stick under a cover. Check out the custom mono shock.

Oh I also picked up a tank. All I need now is some carburetors and I should have everything I need for a running bike.

I think you need to put down the welder, and pick up a grinder  :o

Should look more like this- no grinder needed.

It’s been a while but I’m still goin. Valves were lapped, cylinders were honed, new rings, all that jazz. Engine is painted and finally back in the frame with minimal scratching.

Polished up the cover a bit, I can really see myself riding this thing. ::)

I picked up a set of carbs from an early Ninja 600 after reading of others using it. Hopefully it’ll run well with stock motor, intake, and exhaust set up.

Can you confirm that the spacing is the same for the Ninja carbs and the ‘82 650? I’ve heard people say they fit but haven’t seen or or heard it confirmed by someone who actually has them. What model carbs? There a number stamped on them?

I actually have 2 sets of carbs from early ninja 600s, one for parts. One is stamped V154 YF20 and the other is V153 YI20. Both look the same, could be a difference in the jet sizes, not sure yet.

Here is one of them next to the VB44A carbs off the 1981 CB650C (Ninja carbs on left)

Nice, perfect post. I know you will, but be sure to post back what jets you go with. Plan on doing an actual dyno tune or butt dyno tune?

Probably gonna butt dyno this bad boy because I’m cheap but I’m reading into wideband o2 sensors, that would be interesting to try out.

Had some grime on my kickstand lever and exhaust flanges so I brought out the big guns. A 17 year old can of oven cleaner. The older it is the better it works, right?

Came out vomit green

Turned brown, looks tasty.

Was also able to polish out some deep gouges on the stator cover.

Before

After, used a die grinder with some sanding and scotch brite discs

Currently working on shortening the wiring harness about a foot to relocate the block connectors that were in the headlight bucket to under the tank. My new headlight has no room to fit anything inside.

That Easy Off oven cleaner looks like my cat's vomit!! I hope it works -- the cleaner (not the vomit)!

Managed to relocate all the headlight bucket connectors under the gas tank

No fitting issues, nice. I’m planning on moving the ignition switch to where they’re  located on the early CB’s, under the tank.

Hooked up some front turn signals and a couple of handlebar controls I had laying around. Gotta get started and finish the front fender and brake to call the front end done.

A delivery? For me?

Wow, thanks USPS. It was a crankcase cover gasket, luckily it wasn’t bent too bad.

I was digging around a crate of parts that came off the 650 and found this. A spacer of some sort. Anyone know what it is or where it goes?

Could be, but it looks aluminum. Might be the oil filter spacer.

Last post are the measurements.

Yeah that would explain why it was a bit oily. Put a new filter and some oil in the engine a couple of days ago, don’t know how I forgot this, thanks!

Another quick dumb question.

Does the exhaust hanger bracket fit in front of the passenger peg mount like so? Or behind?

It appears to be fine in front of it. I suppose you could bend it (gently) to mount behind it.

If I’m not mistaken, flip the bracket and it will mount behind.

And you may need to use that bracket on the right side pair. I seem to remember there’s a locating pin so you can’t just flip the bracket. But I only checked out my 650’s exhaust for about 20 minutes and then trashed it during the tear down process.

On another note, I burned out my 1 week old $9 starter solenoid. I guess you get what you pay for.
