Shout-out to Jerry Rxman Griffin re: The Fire!
« on: June 27, 2012, 06:10:58 AM »
Jerry-

I hope you and those you care for are ok down at "The Springs" in the midst of these fires.  My inlaws went through the same in Sierra Vista, AZ last year.  BTW, The Garden of the Gods is one of my favorite places in the whole world.  Take care and let us know how you are.

Hey guys, thanks for thinking of me. The daughter and I are both fine. She is vacationing at her grandfather's and I'm on the road working until late Sat. Hope I have a home when I get back! The fire started Sat around noon and the smoke plume was rising straight upwards. My first thought was OH #$%*, this is the big one they've preached about all these years!!! Direct west view from my house. Looking out my large window it reminds me of sitting in the 3D theatre. Keith K5, JCarthel and I went for a 200+ mile ride AROUND the small fire Sunday. 105+ degrees and humidity in single digits but it was looking promising then. I got up at 4am Mon and hit the road for work all week. Yesterday I got an email telling me the fire had gone over the ridge between the Springs and the mountains and asking how I was doing . Thought that was strange, nice but strange UNTIL I saw some news reports. HOLY #$%*!! My home is 1 mile due east of the area of the city that is evacuated and burning. Most of the forest is on the side of the mountain and not much where I am. My concern is the winds! They were blowing at 65mph when the firestorm came across the ridge and engulfed that neighborhood on the side of the mountain. My only real concern is with the winds possibly pushing the fire across I-25. If that happens it will get REAL bad and could turn into one of the worst firestorms in US history. The neighborhoods are not forested but the lots are small with ~ 20 feet between houses. I'm not due home until late Saturday. Hope I'll still have a home! Thanks again for thinking of us!

Glad to hear you and your daughter are fine, Jerry.  I was thinking about you this morning on the way to work when I was listening to the news about the fires.  Scary stuff.

I've smelled smoke a couple nights ago now, I assume it was Colorado on fire.  Not sure that the weather pattern is bringing it this way anymore.

I've seen some pretty smoky skies in AK, smoky enough in Skagway that it grounded planes from a fire over 500 miles away north of Fairbanks. I remember friends had to leave on the ferry because they had a schedule. An hour later the planes flew and I could see that the ferry and realized I would arrive in Juneau hours before them.  The same smoke cloud was eventually detected on satelite photo over Houston, TX.  Amazing how the atmosphere holds on to it and moves it around.

Keith K5, JCarthel and I went for a 200+ mile ride AROUND the small fire Sunday.
I was wondering about if that ride was supposed to be last weekend...
I sure didn't recognize the Springs from the news coverage; guess it's spread out a bit since the last time I was there, but come to think of it, that was over 20 years ago. I thought I heard that over 30,000 people had been evacuated?  :o :o :o

Talked with my neighbor tonight. He thinks the worrying is over for us. I have finally seen some pix and videos tonight. I said HOLY #$%* and I REALLY mean that now! A Denver TV station (all I can get now) says that that one neighborhood lost between 200 to 300 homes. No official count yet. I remember driving up there one day a few years back and seeing multiple 12 point bucks just laying in front yards right by the road totally uncaring about the attention. My Saturday afternoon return will be surreal!

We need to check on Keith. He lives in the southern area around 31st street. Potential forced evacuation for him and the family. I do not have his number with me but may have it in a PM. Keith, you out there??
