Well the quik-latch came yesterday, holy crap that was quik! :)

Just finished the install. Pretty dang easy and I think it looks awesome. It also works perfectly. For the last time, thanks Alabama for the suggestion! I highly recommend this if you don't want to carry keys. Here are the pictures.

I turned up a piece of steel to fit in the hole in the receiving end of the tank. Here's the threaded plug.

You can tell that it's been welded in and painted. I have a nut on the underside locking the post. So it's essentially double nutted.

Video of it working:

Make this a sticky. The key lock is often missing from tanks.

What was the total cost?

Total was $30. It was really nice because the OD of the threaded part is .75" and the existing hole in the tank is a hair larger. Like .76" or something similar. Fits like a glove.

I don't lock my doors, haha. Some people I know lock their doors when they're home like in the day time, like a Saturday afternoon, that's crazy to me.
I agree but, i have 8 large dogs in my house and yard, i don't really need a lock.

Dave,
I was confused in my old age. By key-less I thought you meant something like an RIFD key-less system -- instead of a latch/fasterner to replace the need for a key.

I like the solution Alabama suggested.

That would be a little too much electronic-ness for even me, haha. A simple push button is what I'm after.

And it came out looking great, too.

Thanks guy, yeah I'm a big fan.

And a few people have asked, but I used the 1" size because that looks almost perfect over the raised bump. I did turn it down about .030" on my lathe but it wasn't necessary. So it went from about .990" to .960".

Thank you for the great idea.  It will be nice to eliminate that gas lid key.

My Quik Latch arrived after only a few days.  QL-25-S1 Billet Mini Quik-Latch 1 Inch Upper Diameter.  $29.

After removing the lock and latch for the Honda key I first screwed in the push button.  Looks great and like it was made for the bike and this purpose.  (Wondering if it would be wise to use a small gasket between the button and gas lid?)

For the post, I had to get creative.  (This is where Cal thinks "oh no" and pulls over to the side of the road to read the post.  Don't worry Cal, no cheap HF drills or bits were employed.)

After several failed ideas, I finally arrived at using the old key switch clip, but putting the latch post between the original clip.  Then I found two nicely sized hard plastic washers in my extensive and neatly organized parts cabinets  (Cal - shhh!).  I cut the post down with a saw of some sort.  Then I used the two nuts that came with it to sandwich the original key switch latch between the washers.  Works great.  I need to fine tune a little, but done.  Key is the part of the post that needs to be sticking up to clip to the latch, the bottom of it needs to be flush with the top of the Honda key latch clip holder.

Nice looks good. If you do have opening issues at least it looks like you have complete adjustability.

If you want to go nuts, you can disassemble the latch. The underside has two small holes in a stainless threaded sleeve threaded in with red loctite. I used my propane torch and snap ring pliers to get it out. (Normal threads, not left hand threads.) Remove that part but watch out for the three small ball bearings that should be stuck in with grease. Remove the spring and button and then you have a hollow latch. Install the latch back on the tank and you can see the alignment of the post and move it accordingly. Reassemble with red or blue loctite. I used blue.

I'll keep that in mind.  For now, no key and it works.  Opens and closes securely.  But who knows, I may get the desire to perfect.  Your switch does seem to work more smoothly than mine.  Alignment I bet, as you say.
