78 rear wheel question
« on: August 09, 2012, 03:30:07 PM »
I have a '78 750K with the 17" stock rear wheel.  I am missing one spoke (having trouble locating a match) and the rim is slightly bent.  Wondering if I can swap out an  18" wheel from a '74 cb750, or a 16" Harley drop center rim, believe was on off a Honda?
Thanks in advance,
Drew

The earier CB750s had a different cushdrive assy.so you would HAVE to use the cushdrive from the 78 and then this MAY cause centering problems with the 18" wheel. Yes ,You can lace a 16" HD rim to the Honda hub and a 140 width tire is about as wide as you have room for.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but when switching rims on a '78k  rear hub, how does one determine what size spokes to use?

I should be able to use the spokes off the 18" or 16"wheel, as long as the hub size is the same??

if youplan on getting the spokes from them, I think buchannon can figure it out for you, just tell them what rim and hub combo you'd be using

otherwise its a math problem, you'd need to know the offset of the rim from center, the effective diameter at the spoke holes of the rim, the spoke count, and the crossing pattern (2) of the spokes

If the hub size is the same (constant) then the hub-to-rim distances would be different for each 16", 17", 18" and would require a different length spoke for each different rim diameter. A spoke for a 16" rim would be too short for a 17" or 18" rim, and a spoke for an 18" rim would be too long for a 16" and 17" rim.
