Oil Galley Bolt Leaking OIL....help?
« on: August 02, 2012, 05:08:20 PM »
I've been obtaining a wealth of knowledge from this forum while working on my CB750 K8. Unfortunately my first post is for a problem...

I bought this bike with 3880 original miles on it. Sat in an aviation hangar for most of its life. Torque bolts still have yellow paint and all the original stickers are on it. I have changed out all fluids and have been riding it regularly with no issues. UNTIL...

Today I fired it up and walked over to right side of bike and noticed oil dripping rapidly out of the bolt where people put there oil pressure gauges. I immediately turned the bike off and then slowly unscrewed the bolt which was on tight. Oil came running out so I screwed it back in quickly. I noticed the back of the bolt had a black o-ring on it...

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing it? I'm hoping you guys say its just a new O-ring, but fearful it could be something much worse. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

There's probably a lot of o-rings that will need replacing.  :)
Including a few in the oil pump.
Fortunately they're cheap.
Can you post some more pictures off the bike? It looks pretty clean.

Thanks for the reply!

Do you think this problem is indicative of the oil pump or where you saying they should be replaced anyway? What is that bolt/plug called? I can't seem to find anyone on the net who has had a leak from that bolt...

Yes I will post some pictures later... front end is off right now but I've spent about 5 days detailing, cleaning, polishing, etc...

It is cap that seals the oil gallery. Many, myself included,  remove and replace it with an oil pressure guage.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

A new o-ring should correct the problem. The fact that oil is being pushed out this oil galley fitting is a pretty good indicator that the pump is pumping well.

I have leaks from 2 of my 4 oil passage bolts/cap.

What size wrench did you use to undo it? I couldn't get a metric or SAE to fit on there snugly, and an adjustable wrench I couldn't get enough bite.

The oil pressure gauges look cool, but I need to put my money into other places on the bike first..  :-\

Any idea where I would find a place to order the O-Ring? I looked on Bike Bandit but I could not find the gallery cap..  :-[

You can buy them right from Honda. Try your local dealer, or online many here use Western Hills Honda or Service Honda ( http://www.servicehondapsn.com/fiche_select.asp )

I think you will need to replace 2 or three of those, the one on the side, another on the bottom of the oil pan and probably one other I missed.
