Accelorator Pump on PD carbs
« on: October 06, 2013, 10:30:53 AM »
ultrasonically cleaned my carbs perhaps a bit much. The little brass cube and the check valve bearing came out :o.
I thought there was suppose to be a spring inside there but there is no spring to be found. I am thinking if I put the bearing back in there and tap the brass piece back in there will be problems but am not sure as I can find the passage for this one. The other on the lid to the pump part is working just fine in one direction as it should. What to do?

You have to have that spring. The right spring.
If the brass cube fell out and you re install it you have to turn it a little so when you push it back into the aluminum hole that the corners of the cube  will get a grip on the aluminum hole.

But the carb still not work right with out this critical part.
The pressure of the spring on the check ball is critic al too.

You will have to buy a new bottom plate with the check ball.
It probably needed it anyway.  This is a case where you have no choice but to buy a new bottom plate.

Shop around for a good price.
Do not buy a used 40 year old part. You will just be wasting
your money on a worn out corroded 40 year old part.

Also if I was the mechanic on this I would check the function of the check ball in the top edge of the float bowl and make sure that one is not missing the spring.
Just look in it with a bright LED pocket flash light and see if you can see the spring in place. That way you will not have to take it apart.

Some of these check valves came with a plastic cube holding in the check ball and that was better because then you did not have the corrosion problems of the brass cube next to aluminum and steel spring and steel check ball.

Are you saying this is another one? Not the one you broke?

No, Lucky stated that I had to buy a new bottom plate but that is not were the problem check valve is ,its in the carb bowl as pictured. The brass cube is not totally in there in the pic (might look like it is). If I can get another small spring what order do they go. I am guessing ball in first then the spring then the brass cube last, right>

Also Lucky is right it will not work without the correct spring.

Might have to cannibalize another bowl or swap em . I am fairly certain though I could find a comparable spring. It may be hiding in the bottom of my ultrasonic though I doubt it .

That brass cube in the top edge of that float bowl is ruined.
It has been beat up, The brass cube is supposed to sit below the edge of the surface of the float bowl so that the O ring can fit on top of it.

I would remove the brass cube and repair any damage if possible to the edge of the bowl and the brass cube.

When you hit brass with a STEEL hammer it causes the brass to spread out and the cube will no longer fit correctly.
If you try to hammer it in further you risk cracking the float bowl.

Use the plastic handle of a screw driver to tap that brass cube into the edge of the float bowl. AFTER the brass cube is repaired.

thanks for the link. I've seen that before but it involves us a set up with a nylon cube instead of brass which I guess it's a little bit more difficult to work with. Guess I'm on a hunt for a new number 2 carb bowl.thanks for the input though fellas.

^^^ correct.  hope that cube is not 'out of round cube' and it fits properly in its correct place  :o it looks hammered :-\
the only places where there are those brass check valve cubes are the TOP of the bowl lip where it meets the carb body, and in the bottom of the accel pump bowl.
