I imagine you will get an appreciable power gain going from the Ural 750 to the R100 motor - an approximate 160% increase according to factory specs at the crank (70 vs 44).


And that's with a stock R100 engine, you can buy some excellent engine hot up gear from Europe that will double that figure for not a great deal of money. I thought about doing it to my second R100RS, but decided that it was easier to sell it and buy my K100RS, which is way quicker, and easier to live with. If I had a Urinal though, I'd do just what Seth is gonna do, and I'd work that engine over to within an inch of it's life.......... ;D

It's a '96 Tourist, so the original motor was a 650cc! Yeah, I'm hoping the driveline will be able to handle it. I'm told that as long as I still respect it as a ural, I should be good to go.

Motor before cleanup.

I'll get to the barrels with the bead blaster when I go into the top end(s). I think I may start a project thread over on DTT for this...not sure how much interest there will be. I'm looking to still have this thing as an outside only rig, so cosmetics won't be as tight as previous builds. I'm mulling over paint ideas, and a general theme.

Not really great iphone photos, but I wanted to give you guys something before I went back to work. Honestly, I've pretty much just been riding the ural for the last three weeks ;) With the clip ons and the pull on the Mikuni's, the bike is pretty tiresome on the hands and forearms.
The best training for that is to ride more, not less!  This is a beautiful bike, you did a great job on it.

There's nothing more expensive than a free bike...
FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

I wonder if the springs on the Mikunis can be modified or replaced with lower tension springs so it's not as much of a work out.  It would be a shame to have to swap out the RS34s, but you could always go to CRs.  Hey, it's only money, right?

That sucks.  I had no idea the RS34s had what appears to be an inherent design issue.  I will be rethinking carbs for my second 750.  Maybe I'll do CR29s again.

I don't know much about your current carbs but I have a thought. Have you considered changing the leverage ratios, like increasing the size of the bell crank or at the handlebar grip with a different throttle tube?

I have seen where someone put fishing line around the nylon throttle tube to build up the diameter of the sleeve. That is a quick, cheap tweak to see if it begins to help at all

FYI - Seth has a Motion Pro adjustable throttle, so I would imagine he has already tried the different throttle diameters as a "fix."

Seth, Mike Reick is the one to talk to, he runs these carbs and has done for some time, he's on holidays at the moment, I would definitely be talking to someone that knows these carbs well, they are used for racing and a heavy throttle is detrimental to throttle response..

Mick,

I spoke with Mike last year, actually. The carbs are dialed in, and damn near perfect. Bike runs like a monster. My single, and only fault on these carbs is the pull. I believe it's just the nature of the beast. If you google the RS's (34, 36, 38, 40's) throughout their applications (early gixxer, retro'd onto KZ's, etc.), you'll see the same complaints. I think the ticket is the flatslides with the roller bearings...buttery smooth (I'm hoping Don will take the financial plunge and get some racked). Others complain that the carbs are difficult around town, but I find them very easy, and they idle well.

I wonder how different they are to the early GSXR1100 carbs, they were flatslides and smooth and light....?  I love light throttles and want to use a set of these, let us know if you find a solution, I think the bigger cam on the linkage is the way to go... ;)

I also prefer the light throttle. I'm at the second smallest cam in my package of four. Any larger, and it would make a 1/4 turn throttle feel stock.

No worries Seth, that was a slightly odd reply, but anyway, I thought you might prefer the CR's throttle pull over your Mikuni's, and as my CR's are just sitting in a box it wouldn't have been a problem for me to send them to you to try, but I'll assume that you're not a fan of CR's, yeah?
