Fuel injection will spoil you (in a good way).

No kidding.  The throttle response with fuel injection is just so immediate!

Don, have you ever considered swapping one of your vintage Honda's over to fuel injection system?  I've kicked around the thought of that with the 550 but I would imagine that would involve some pretty pricey parts.

There have been a couple of members that have taken on the task.  It involves some pricey parts and brain damage -- plus a more robust charging system to power the fuel pump, etc.  I don't believe you gain any significant engine performance gains from it though.

Have you seen the 450 build where they are putting a cb500r motor in the frame?

It is an interesting build for a bike/roller that was without its motor.  Buying a wrecked 500R without damage to front end and motor...

This sounds like a fun swap.  Reminiscent of my buddy Ian Halcott stuffing a punched out Kawasaki 500ex motor (to 600cc) and mounting it into a CB550 frame.  It's a very fun bike to ride.  http://www.returnofthecaferacers.com/2013/08/the-thorn-by-twinline-motorcycles.html
Unfortunately, the CB500R motor (471cc parallel with EFI) only puts out 47 bhp at the crank; its engineered primarily for entry level in stepped licensed countries, so it's a little under-powered and the juice isn't worth the squeeze to me.  You also get to hide an airbox and lots of wiring harness components.

Sure, it is not a screamer, but it will be a light entertaining bike. Anyone who knows old Hondas will do a double take.  There have been one or two modern 175 dirt bike motors dropped into a CA95 frame.  Not as fun a setup, a CB92 or CB95 would be ideal for that retro mod would be a platform with more performance potential.

Very cool build thread. I get what he's trying to accomplish -- going for modern, EFI reliability.  By going on a 80 lb. diet he might have a pretty quick little bike indeed.  Smart to keep all of the stock electronics.  He could probably flash tune the ECU to squeeze out some additional performance from the stock 47 hp.

Isn't he going with a Microsquirt system to tweek the power curve even more than stock.  It will be entertaining.  So, the 98-105 hp at rear wheel on the cbr600rr would be a bit too much for the 550 chassis even strengthened.  Detuning it could make itvpalatable enough to yield a fun transplant and remain a safe one.  You overpower a chassis too much and it just gets dangerous.

Agreed. If you up the ante that far, I think you have to rethink the project with a custom chromoly frame.

After reading the thread, I get his approach.  Personally, I'd want to squeeze a little more power out of the CB500R engine.  I bet he could get a little more uuumph with a re-flash of the ECU, header, and maybe cams.

Cal weighed them in at 2 lbs. heavier than stock.  I assume that was compared to a stock 550 drum hub.  A stock 750F0/F1 hub with disc and caliper is almost certainly heavier, because the F hub uses a much heavier rotor, caliper and bracket.  By that comparison, I imagine that the Cognitomoto hub set up is lighter.

On top of that, you get modern performance.

Mine arrived vapor blasted, getting powder coated in silver.

Nice.  I don't know why, but I thought it was going to be black.  Silver will be a nice distinction. 

I forgot about your photobucket of your laced front.  The powdercoat almost makes it look chromed or like polished aluminum.

FYI - Australian Troy Bayliss (WSBK Champion and MotoGP winner) is also a big fan of the rear brake, in his latest book A Faster Way.  So is WSBK and BSBK Champion Tom Sykes. 

I use both but, of course, the front much more.  I'll have to work on drills.

Each to his own Don, there are racers that don't use it at all, personal, preference as well, some guys only use it to control wheel spin exiting corners, or stability mid corner, I mainly use it when riding slow for balance and stability, sometimes for scrubbing speed mid corner while holding a steady throttle, never with the throttle off {in a corner}, I've had guys tell me I'm mad because I use the front deep into the corner entrance, get to know your bike well and use the brakes as you see fit, Always buy the best tires you can, everyone's different.. The rear brake has probably thrown more riders down the road than any other factors combined....
PS, I'm a lot slower now {self preservation has kicked in}....
Who told you CycleX weren't selling them any more..{I inquired a little while ago and they could still get them}? As far as I know they never made the hub so its still a part that can be bought, they aren't the only shop selling light hubs either..
Cal, I wasn't referring to the "adapted" rear hub, I'm sure that's heavy too, its the one they used on their 750/4 race bike.   


Interesting tidbit about rear brakes..

I had been riding bikes for 25 years and thought I knew how to ride? Well, I learned a real lesson about the rear brake. DON'T use it unless you are an "EXTREMELY" skilled rider.  I still use mine when I'm just putting around town but once I hit the curves or open road, I move my toe back to the foot peg so I'm not tempted to use it. Any  time you apply the front brake it takes weight off the rear tire and make it susceptible to locking up. And believe you me, it doesn't take much in certain situations. If you are hard on the front brakes and lock the rear tire, you just barely have time for a quick "Oh #$%*" and you are on the deck. I know, I was there!

When I attended Mike Sullivans Race School in Spokanne Wa. The very first thing he told us was if we couldn't ride like Valentino Rossi, "DON'T USE THE REAR BRAKE"! He said most of the crashes from first time racers was due to using the rear brake.
