The 79 650 seems like all it needs is a freshening up so it's getting that. This is a titled piece that was bought at a local car wrecking yard.
The last owner, who has has it for years and years, said he couldn't get it running and took it to the scrap yard .
Upon carb clean out ,which it needed badly, there were a couple pieces missing, the rubber connectors to the intakes were split.... should have ran crappy but it should have run if that was the only issue. New carb kit on order just to be sure.
Taking the wiring harness down, I noticed a couple wires broken just before the coupling...that sounds more like it, so'that'll get repaired before it goes back on. 1 cdi is visibly burned....looks like another case of somebody trying to jumpstart it from a running car.
And lastly, one coil with a split running down the length of it ...all that might have something to do with it not running. We'll see.
The engine was removed and cleaned , and cleaned some more...noticed no airflow through 2 and 3 even at 100lbs. Don't know where it was parked all this time but it must have been mudwasp city....much poking ,scraping , and washing out those old mud nests from in the fins...brushed on some carb cleaner overnight and washed it off with mineral spirits the next day. Then it was ready for paint. Painted the whole thing a simple cast aluminum, bushed the heavy oxides off the aluminum trim parts and gave the only a light polish , not see yourself polish, but a nice " It's 35 years old and clean "kind of polish for a change. So that's ready to go beack in the frame.
The frame, more evidence of mudwasp infestation, and 35 thousand miles of chain lube. Somebody just rode this thing and never washed it. Once all that was removed , the frame's condition was decent. some spot rust here and there to wire brush and sand off but all in all not bad. Gave it a good wire brushing on a drill a light hand sand 2 washes with mineral spirit, then some degreaser and a trip to the carwash for some high pressure rinsing action...good clean fun .
Dried the frame with air compressor, leaving it in the sun for a while just to be sure. It's 90 here today so it dried out fast, unlike my Tee shirts. I was setting up to paint when this guy with a Honda V 65 shows up asking me if I can change his starter button...said No , not today, it's a sealed unit and it's frozen . Then he whipped out his latest E bay purchase and said good that's why I brought this....great.... bring it in. 40 mins. later he was happy as a clam pulling out the drive....and I'm 40 mins late on the paint. Oh well.
Finally got the frame painted my favorite color gloss black, and it's all swingin in the sun until tonight before the evening dew hits it.
Well that's my Saturday and it's only 3 o'clock, what to do next.
