That's why I can't imagine some of the posters counts...they have to be very efficient to post so much or they spend a lot of time posting and reading.

The 79 650 seems like all it needs is a freshening up so it's getting that. This is a titled piece that was bought at a local car wrecking yard.
The last owner, who has has it for years and years, said he couldn't get it running and took it to the scrap yard .
Upon carb clean out ,which it needed badly, there were a couple pieces missing, the rubber connectors to the intakes were split.... should have ran crappy but it should have run if that was the only issue. New carb kit on order just to be sure.
Taking the wiring harness down, I noticed a couple wires broken just before the coupling...that sounds more like it, so'that'll get repaired before it goes back on. 1 cdi is visibly burned....looks like another case of somebody trying to jumpstart it from a running car.
And lastly, one coil with a split running down the length of it ...all that might have something to do with it not running. We'll see.
The engine was removed and cleaned , and cleaned some more...noticed no airflow through 2 and 3 even at 100lbs. Don't know where it was parked all this time but it must have been mudwasp city....much poking ,scraping , and washing out those old mud nests from in the fins...brushed on some carb cleaner overnight and washed it off with mineral spirits the next day. Then it was ready for paint. Painted  the whole thing a simple cast aluminum, bushed the heavy oxides off the aluminum trim parts and gave the only a light polish , not see yourself polish, but a nice " It's 35 years old and clean "kind of polish for a change. So that's ready to go beack in the frame.
The frame, more evidence of mudwasp infestation, and 35 thousand miles of chain lube. Somebody just rode this thing and never washed it. Once all that was removed , the frame's condition was decent. some spot rust here and there to wire brush and sand off  but all in all not bad. Gave it a good wire brushing on a drill a light hand sand 2 washes with mineral spirit, then some degreaser and a trip to the carwash for some high pressure rinsing action...good clean fun .
Dried the frame with air compressor, leaving it in the sun for a while just to be sure. It's 90 here today so it dried out fast, unlike my Tee shirts. I was setting up to paint when this guy with a Honda V 65 shows up asking me if I can change his starter button...said No , not today, it's a sealed unit and it's frozen . Then he whipped out his latest E bay purchase and said good that's why  I brought this....great.... bring it in. 40 mins. later he was happy as a clam pulling out the drive....and I'm 40 mins late on the paint. Oh well.
Finally got the frame painted my favorite color gloss black, and it's all swingin in the sun until tonight before the evening dew hits it.
Well that's my Saturday and it's only 3 o'clock, what to do next.

Clean another rack of 550 carbs while waiting for paint to dry?
Bug the wife and fire up the charcoal grille to have bbw chicken or burgers or "tube steak"?
Roast a few marshmallows for smores after dinner?

rb,
Well it's obvious that you're not a southerner.  Today was the first Saturday of college football.  You could always put one of the games on and watch that for a spell while you're waiting on the next project to work on.

David , Due to fortuwishus circumstance my wife owns a store that is open until 5 every Saturday. Saturdays are mine, all mine, ha ha ha.....possibly overdone... but Saturdays are the time that is usually a non interrupted 8 hour day that I get to do whatever I want with. Sunday however ....my a$$ is hers...and I get to do all the things that married men hate to do ,   like go antique shopping, helping in the garden,or other wicked things that must be in a manual that all women keep in a safe place, for people that have spent over 25 years together, must be called How To Get Even. Can't say it actually exists, haven't found it yet.

Last time my Better Half took me shopping, she took me into Victoria's Secret.
She was looking at Night wear and asked me my opinion of one particular item.
I said let me see it and extended my arms to take it from her.
Just as she handed it to me and with the Sales Lady standing there, I pulled my hands back and the item fell to the floor.
We all looked at it on the floor.
I then turned to Better Half and Said,  "It looks Great go ahead and buy it!"
She turned and left the store.
I was never invited to go shopping again.  :)  :)  :)
And that was over 25 years ago.  :)  :)  :)

Charlie, I wish I thought of something like that 25 years ago :).

I've been working on this idea that my wife should take her girl friends out to go shopping and dine out. It's my newest shopping avoidance technique. So far it seems to work on a Thursday nights, but hasn't done much for Sundays yet.

I'm in favor, although reluctant of trying Stevo's no nonsense approach  , while I play it out in my head it never has a positive outcome. She'll probably want to follow me around and talk.
Or worse yet, try to take an interest in what I like to do, and ask lots of questions.
Or just get a little more than upset, and go for a very long rant....I prefer the silent treatment.
Or  just get even...and crazy glue IT to my leg while I'm sleeping....have to sleep with one eye open from now on.
Okay, non of that sounds worth it to me, maybe safer just  to go antique shopping.
But I am in favor of StevO 's  Just Say No approach.. Good luck StevO.

The main reason this works for me is our daughter gets "bribed" into going.  Only downfall to this system is they typically spend a lot of money.

Another hot day today, decided to stay home and play with the 79 650. Tonight it's a roller with  engine in, header on. new plugs, oil and filter is here ready to go in.
Wiring coming up next. I have some spare coils and cdi's to go in it,and some soldering that has to happen, then a good cleaning and recheck.then check timing and set the valves.
Carbs aren't too bad, the kit should be in Thursday or Friday, I want to use a few pieces from the kit that were missing or beat in the carbs and fire it up. sync it and see what it does.

He found that the cdi coil packs/modules were shot, one burnt and other cracked and he found a few other bits that were apparently bad wiring as electricity is funny about jumping air gaps in wire that is broke before a connector.  So, he's fixing the bad cdi modules and the bad wiring I would imagine is where the soldering is happening.

rb & Stev-o

Just remember one very important thing, especially about Women.
They NEVER JUST GET EVEN.
Where does Even Get you (or them)?
Back to zero.
What good is getting back to zero?
Their Object is to get ahead!
Guaranteed you will pay, someway, somehow.

And rb, if she were to take in interest in your "hobby" that could be an opportunity to buy yet another few more.  :)  :)
As in, "Oh look, see this, it's actually very bad and we really need to get a new one!
You could break down if we use this one and have to push it home."  :)  :)

I'm pretty happy that my wife stays outside the garage because it's  dirty and smells like ...well, smells like a garage.
I'm also alright with her not going riding with me, leans the wrong way in a turn , helmet banging, and seat hogging especially while braking. After a few rides with her I started putting one up seats on the bikes....she stopped paying attention a while ago so I put the stock ones back on a few of them.
I have been trying to cut back on new purchases , unless they are stupid cheap. She doesn't seem to mind when I bring another MISTRESS to the garage. That's what she calls the bikes. I'm pretty sure that I have surpassed a comfortable number of machines to maintain a couple mistresses ago but I can still see the floor so I guess there's room for the occasional stray.
All in all, with all the other things that I could be doing .... this is probably the safest thing I could be doing, she knows where I am, can get a hold of me in seconds. There's no bail or court fees to deal with, no new mothers knocking at the door . It's a good thing and  I think she knows it. So I guess it's probably the least  I could do is make Sundays all about her.
          Really sick of antiques though.

rb,

I hear you!!!!
I guess we all gotta do what we gotta do to keep peace in the house.  :)
But on balance, going antique shopping isn't too bad when you think about all the other types of shopping she could take you.  :)  :)

For sure Charlie.
When we first got married , my wife thought that we should share all the household tasks, like the laundry.
It's funny though, when it came to cutting the grass or painting the house, that was specialized chores ...
Well anyways , I don't recognize permanent press, hand wash, hang dry, or iron...silk and other tags meant nothing to me. After a couple of years training in the fine art of laundry , I had enough, and washed her entire wardrobe in HOT , then put it all in a high heat dryer for a while....When she pulled those dresses and sweaters  out the dryer they could have fit a Barbie doll.
You IDIOT!!! she cried , called all her friends and told them what a jerk I am. She called her wholesalers and got a new wardrobe and I paid for it , that cost a bundle but, she has never asked me to do her laundry again.
New clothes...expensive. Only having to do your own laundry.....priceless.

What? You have to separate clothes when you wash them? What happens if you get caught in the rain?

Is she buying antiques that need work or pieces she wants you to refinish?
Some hobbies or stress relief activities you choose are for that purpose.  I have enjoyed woodworking and am good with my hands as I have an eye for detail.  But, my ex sucked the joy out of woodworking for me by adding her list of honey-do-s to my hobby that were things she imagined could be done. It is fine if that is every now and then but if it is the only thing that you get to do, then it isn't enjoyable,  it is turning into a task like work.
I have decent artistic skills but, I didn't compete with my ex who was a graphic artist by degree.
I can do a nice watercolor painting or pencil drawing or even pastel drawing,  but, I haven't had the motivation and desire to do so in several years. I have done drawings and paintings as gifts before and they were not something displayed merely because I did it, they had depyh and perspective and focus as well as lighting and shadow as any good painting would. Not that I am that great...you won't find my work in a museum.

So, RB...it could be worse than just the Sunday antiques but, it could be refinishing pieces or restoring pieces. Most antiques are worth more original than refinished in most cases...

The 650 is basically all back together. I had some spare coils on the shelf , so that's good. The wiring harness had blades rotted apart in the connectors, smoked wires and generally in poor condition...if it was the last one on the shelf I would be soldering but , as luck would have it, the shelf had a nice '80 650 wiring harness on it,so I went for that ,there are some lighting wire differences but easily fixed, so I used that. The CDI boxes that I thought were on the shelf wasn't. Booo. Turns out only a fresh regulator.
Waiting for carb parts.
