RB, looking good.  Guys over in high performance section of forums might have information about doing it.  Have you thought about posting over there with a question?

Good luck!  Motors look great.  I would not complain to work in that space as long as it wasn't nasty hot and humid.  It is not fun to wipe sweat out of your eyes constantly when trying to do something for fun.

Thanks.
I started on the top end of the other 550 engine today.
Got some new work gloves for the wash tank  ,good for working with toxic  stuff and I'm sure that's toxic stuff. Hands were nice and clean when I took them out. Everything was going fine ,until...I dropped the jugs that I was cleaning up...I can't believe how many fins got damaged and not just on one side. Thought about different ways to repair it for a while, went over to the shelves and found there was a spare 550  jug among the 500 jugs...and they were in better shape than the one I was cleaning . Ha , finally happened, a disaster that turned out better for the better just by happening.
Of course, there was lots of cursing, but no flipping out, I did it  , it was my fault, got lucky and I got over it.  A nice hone and some cleanup, painted  it cast aluminum and on it went...made sure I didn't drop this one, can't get that lucky twice.
I have the head cover with tappets all in great shape so I painted that cast aluminum. I'm going through the valves next  and when the head is ready , it'll get some semi gloss black... just opposite in color on the top end of the last one. Subtle change, but a change non the less.
All in all, a good evening in the shop, and I have a better engine now than I would have had without    the incident.
I still think this stuff is fun,  no matter how often I do it,  what a wonderful hobby we have.

It sucks you ruined a cylinder but, it was good it worked out.

What do you do about worn rocker covers for the rocker shafts
wearing eccentric in the cover?

Have you ever tried to bush them or otherwise repair them?
Thanks,

If they are sloppy I don't use them, I keep them around in case I could use any of the parts from them...have a hard time throwing anything away... even that jug, someday I may need sleeves that I can bore in an undamaged jug. I have beat tappets too, someday we won't be able to get replacements , somebody out there may decide to weld the worn faces and re machine them, like they do with cams.
Sounds allot like excuses for not getting rid of stuff ,don't it.
But you never know when the supply will run out.
Like when I'm 70 yrs old or something...wouldn't know a 550 from a wheelchair, it'll come in handy then.     Or when
My kids will be rooting through my stuff out in the shop saying "why did he save all this $hit". and throw it out.
Then they'll be some poor bastage out there that could have used or has been searching for the very junk I was saving for just such an occasion. And it'll be gone.
As long as I have the space to store this crap it doesn't cost me anything...might as well keep it...you know...just in case.

Mike R already hard welds rockers. He has resources that are amazing and does
spectacular work from what I have  seen.
So, supplies of good rockers are drying up.  Still can put together a new set from
ebay sellers but you pay for it one way or another.

I understand the reluctance...never know until you toss it,  Then you need it or learn it was recoverable.

Was just curious.

Maybe I should get MORE crap...you know...just in case.

The last of the 550 motors are finished.

I've been picking racks of clean carbs off the shelf and not cleaning the other spare racks when I should have...ran out of clean ones.
They'll be some carb cleaning coming up soon.

Work seems to have taken up most of my summer but, I got most of it done and now the schedule is thin. That's kind of a good thing because now I can spend a  stretch of time out in the shop instead of trying to fit in an hour here and and hour there.
The spare 550 engines have been done for a while and are still sitting on the table. I'm reluctant to just stick them on a shelf in waiting.   I've been thinking of using two nice stainless stands I picked up at the junkyard , mounting an engine to each of them and decorate the house with them until they are needed. I don't know what my wife would say about this as I haven't discussed redecorating the living room in Honda moteif. Aw, maybe I'll just surprise her!
I was in the shop thinking about doing those 500 engines when it hit me...Why?. Why has never happened around here before, and you know what , I still haven't come up with  a decent reason to rebuild them and leave them on a shelf, so I'm gonna hold off on them. They'll be fine being stored in their present condition until I need another one. There are other projects to do around here before winter and they should be starting now so's to get the painting out of the way.
Recently I have had to to some maintenance to my fave stock 650 that I haven't played with since last spring because I was riding the fave 500. Now the 650 is running great and I've forgotten that it'll kick the $hit out of that 500 anytime on any road,so I've been riding it every chance I can.
Parked next to that 650 was the 79 650 I pulled from the junkyard last year,

which I painted because it was too ugly

so when there was time with a battery on charge I wandered over to it.
Well I just don't understand why Honda decided to put the crappiest handlebars they could find on every one of the 650 s, doesn't matter what year or what model , the handlebars all suck.  So I had a brandy new set of superbike bars looking for a home  and started to put them on the 79 while I was waiting. But then the cables seemed to be frozen so they... came out . Then I got a pretty good look at the carbs... they came out and got cleaned. Found the rubbers from carbs to manifold were totally split open...were to get those right? Turns out there was these 1 1/2 - 1 1/4 rubber adapters that was laying around and with some careful cutting in length they should do the trick and look good too.  Yay! Last fall I could handle the blue paint alright but the exhaust system was making me sick , so a new set of headers were installed. Now it doesn't make me sick to look at it , now it makes me sick that it hasn't been run in 11 years.
The engine turns over nicely. the frame needs surface rust removal and paint. The engine is going to get some much needed paint too, all cast aluminum and polish...unless it gets rebuilt , then its cast aluminum and cast iron.
I picked up a nice seat from another member here last year so that part is okay to look at now....Yup , I think the 79 is the next project around here.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Cool RB! I look forward to seeing more of the 650 project.
Subtitle change to 650 theme, you should think of something clever.

How many cc different in the stock 650 over a 550?

With the 650 going do cheaply I think one of them needs in my collection but,
it is going to have to wait and be like the 79 as I can't stand the more chopper style models.
Look forward to seeing more.!!!

David, that's the one thing I like about the 79, it look is still classic, not like the chopper style tank lift and seat drop that happened in the 80's models.

I still love the 500/550 frame over the 650 frames, although the 1979 is pretty close.  That's why I've opted to shove the 650 engine into the 550 frame.

I'm looking forward to your rebuild, RB!!

David, you're right. The title should be changed to reflect the projects that go on around here. I had a couple threads on builds prior to this thread but, since this has been an endless type of activity and I have the attention span of a goldfish, it all overlaps and  happens so quickly and continuously I figured it's just easier to continue the" 77 550 followed me home "thread.
I don't know, lots of guys do lots of bikes...perhaps there should be a place here called " my garage"... a place where each member can show what goes on in their garage on a single continuous thread.
Don't get me wrong, I see the value of each separate build  ,  it's easy to find any particular build that way,  but really, it's hard to fully appreciate any member's entire SOHC experience one lost thread at a time.  Like take stevO for example, he's been here a while, has tons of threads, he's everywhere all the time, and Cal too, he's another one, these guys are everywhere on every thread. I know from recent memory that stevO had a beautiful kawi and nice 550 I think there was a really nice 750 in the mix too. I know he flips bikes, I know he has his own collection, I know he goes through bikes like most people go through underwear. It's a continuous activity for him but it's hard to recognize his vast experience here by remembering a thread or two.  Cal too, I remember his last 550 thread where he picked up the rusty remains of a 500 or a 550 and then the engine porn thread.....I know he's done much more, but that's all I remember, but each case , their sum of experience with these machines is so much greater than their last two threads that it seems a shame that each of their projects/experiences with these machines should be lost in some forgotten thread way back on page 10 or more. Like I'm sure the newbes get here looking for help and think who the hell are these guys and what do they know ... says he's an expert under his name, he's probably been here forever and only adjusted his chain or something. Of course no one would say this because on this forum we have an unusually high amount of respect for each member.
I like that.
And honestly, I've been here long enough I know that most our members eat , drink and crap SOHC's and would like to see more of their experiences so I can learn ,but I'm not wild about hunting down individual threads.
That's why I went for a continuous record of events type thread instead of a single project thread. Not because I think I'm All That but it's a format that I can easily refer back too to retrieve data, date of build ,what was done, who gave me a better idea on how to do it , what idea of mine failed, which engine was an early rebuild, sometimes I write the original miles on a motor in a thread so later I know what I'm dealing with...that kind of stuff.
And of course I do look back at it all every now and then and say "I did that" in surprise.
10 years ago, did you think you would be doing all of this as a hobby?  I didn't.  And with the help of members here, who are all great by the way, always have your back, and just endless knowledge that they are willing to share, made this all possible for me to do...me , I'm a cranky home builder who liked to ride Hondas... made this a part of my life that I wouldn't trade for the world.
But I like to see it as an unfolding story...So I changed the subject title to what it should have been, "500/550/650 that followed me home"....and the story continues.
  Good idea, thanks David.

rb,
Keep doing what you're doing.  I love it when I see that there are new posts in your thread.  It does indeed let me keep up with all of your vast experience in one neat & tidy thread.

For what it's worth, I don't know that everyone on the boards knows about this function...I told a long time member about it recently and he wasn't aware of it.  When you see a "New" icon next to the title of a thread, if you click on the "New" icon itself, it will take you to the first post in the thread that you have not read.  No need to scroll down 2 or 3 pages trying to find the last post that you read, just click on the New button.

I've used it for a long time and was surprised when this very long-time member (like 5,000 posts & has been around for about 5 or more years) didn't know about it.  Just wanted to pass that along in case others didn't know it either.

All that and the new title didn't take.

Hey rb.....don't forget about my Z1 too!  [there is a thread for that somewhere?!] I have 3 Kaws now down here on my ranch...ha!

Go to your first post on this thread and hit modify, then change the title.

Thanks StevO, that worked . I did read the Z1 thread a while back, nice bike.

David
I thought that I had old threads before that were lost somewhere, yeah, they were lost in my mind. Turns out it was another ongoing thread...same format.  It was "project 1 of 12 started". I'm sure twelve got finished but I don't remember if they all got finished in the year time frame I gave myself originally . Shoot, now I'll have to reread that to find out.
and Stev-O  continues to be everywhere ,all the time. He really is amazing!

RB, one way to see what someone's been up to is selecting their name to go to their public profile.  Once there you can select a link to see all their posts.
It will tell you on the profile other details they decided to share as well.

It is useful for people who don't post alot. Stev-o might have a lot of posts to wade through.
You can then select a menu to sort by topic.

I wonder how some people can post so much a day.  They aren't using mobile devices to do it all.
David- back in the desert SW!
