I ordered a set of R and L points and 4 caliper seals for a GL1000 from my local Mom and Pop bike shop. I bought there knowing it costs more but I want them to be in business too. Anyway my parts came in today $213. holy crap. I guess I'm paying double retail.
It would be roughly $88 at Service Honda.  I could put on a Dyna for that points price or cheap points and a hondaman ignition.
Sad to say, but I can't continue to pay their prices.

I find my big box Honda shop here in town sells real Honda stuff for less than E-bay sometimes. Luckily they have a big internet presence under Cyclepartsnation so I get the cheap prices and pay no shipping. Another friend who has a Ducati,Triumph dealership is real good at getting anything aftermarket quite fairly for me.
Sadly it looks like Mom and Pop need to poke their heads out a little  to see the competition and get a little more real on their pricing to keep customers coming back.  Sounds like your a one and done Don.

I only use the mom and pop these days if it is one or two items that shipping would be a deal breaker on.
You have to be somewhat competitive if you plan on staying in business.

She said $213, service honda is $77.13 plus shipping.  Dang.

Had a similar, but not quite as painful experience the other day. Needed a coax cable splitter: one cable in, two cables out. Simple enough, figured I would do my part and help Radio Shack pay their bankruptcy attorney's fees... just didn't realize I would have to pay for all of them! I expected maybe five bucks for a "high end" one, but when it rang up over EIGHTEEN DOLLARS  :o I almost walked out (after I caught my breath)...

but I wasn't in the mood to wrestle my way in and out of "Super Wally-World" across the street...  >:(

I will pay more for mom and pop or made in the usa stuff and I usually go out of my way looking for it...  SAS shoes, Diamond Gusset jeans, etc but yeah I'd be really hard pressed to pay double plus Don...

I havent stopped by yet but I'm printing the pages from service Honda to take along.  I know they're not a dealer and expect to pay a percentage more but double retail is off the chart.

Yep, thats almost triple the cost, I would do exactly the same thing Don, I would also explain why you ordered from them and go on to say the "if these prices remain this high I will have no choice but to buy elsewhere"..   ;)

I got a sprocket from the local guy, price was reasonable. I didn't think I'd use as right  now as expected, but will hang on to it.  If it was honda I would have returned it.

I drove the 30 miles, got there today ready with Service honda's prices. She handed me the order, it was doubled up. I paid the regular price on service hondas page no shipping. Good deal, I felt bad. They kept the overage for stock.
So I bought more stuff there.

I needed some parts for my  washing machine. I looked up the parts on an internet site and wrote down the part numbers and prices. I went to a local appliance parts house looking for the parts. When he asked me what I needed, I handed him the paper with the parts list. He took one look at it and threw it back me and said "I can't touch those prices! and besides I don't stock them either" I explained that I understood that and didn't expect him to match the prices. I preferred to buy locally and was willing to pay a reasonable price since I wouldn't have to pay shipping. He was thrilled! He ended up giving me jobber price which was very close to the internet price with shipping and gave me a couple tips about the installation. I've been buying there ever since.

I got home and realized I had 6 brake seals. There should be only 4 and all the same number. The 4 that were the same didn't fit. The two bigger ones worked on the front calipers so I used them and looked up the numbers of the other 4. The 4 too small ones fit my brothers 76 wing so I just put them in his tool box, I noticed some brake seals in there so I checked the numbers and sure enough they were the ones I needed for the 2 piston rear caliper.

I have a local bike parts shop and I end up paying about 10% more for parts.
It's worth it to do biz locally.

Here in Canada, Honda has official dealers (privately owned and operated) but they only allow so many to be "motorcycle" and/or "auto" dealers.  There are lots of small engine outlets that carry their off-road ATVs, lawnmowers, and generators.  One such dealer is local to me and a lot more convenient for access.  I've found that even if they don't have access to look up parts, if I take in the part number they are more than willing and capable to enter it into the Honda ordering system and order in the part from Honda for me.  Their pricing seems to be standard Honda listing (the same as a motorcycle dealer) and the shipping service is usually pretty quick as they regularly get other supplies from the (likely same) Honda warehouse.  In fact, on some really old stuff, the warehouse doesn't actually stock it anymore; but, the ordering system ties into old stock in various dealers across the country and will order it in from them.  Once I got some grips shipped out of Quebec, but they were mis-labeled and the wrong ones, so they sent them back at no charge and got another set that were correct from B.C.

It's a lot more convenient for me to get the genuine stuff.

These guys used to work at a Honda shop, they went independent a long time ago and buy through a local 4 wheeler dealer. I like the fact I can get them to mount tires and hot tank carbs when they're really caked. It's worth the drive to go there once in a while even though they did totally screw up this order.
