kap384's CB400F Build - Just Garage updates for now
« on: February 16, 2015, 05:51:41 pm »
Well, this is the beginning of another build.  It's been awhile since the last one was documented (my CB750F2), but don't worry, it hasn't just been life that's gotten in the way, there have been a fair number of bikes too.  I actually made a list of 5 bikes I wanted to own one day own back in my early to mid teens.  I realize now it is a function of the vintage of my father's magazines that I studied for hours and hours.  The list didn't change much over the years.  My 1977 CB750F2 was the first on the list, followed by the 1983 CX650T.  Turns out, the last 3 bikes came to my garage over the course of last year.

Technically I made the deal on the 1979 CBX1000 back in December of 2013, but for various reasons I didn't have it in my possession until late February of last year.  I'm not looking for fully restored specimens as I enjoy doing the work myself.  It's the only thing nearly as good as riding these old bikes.  Rather, I was looking for complete examples that already had the 1 or 2 pieces of unobtanium already acquired.  The CBX came with NOS exhaust, but hasn't run for 11 years.  But that's for a different forum.

I had passed up on a Black Bomber 5 years ago for a good price that I'd always regretted.  Out of the blue, mid year, with my CBX safely in my garage, I found a very clean example of a 1965 CB450K0.  After some shipping, some storage and a road trip to get it across the border, it was mine.  Now all I had left on my list was a 1975 CB400F.  Red please.

Sure enough, last fall, a red 1975 CB400F came up locally, and I pounced.  The price was high, but the simplicity of the deal sold it for me.  The last two bikes had come across the border, and I was well aware of the dollar amount that was added to the price tag.  In addition to cash, the licensing process here in Alberta requires more money and an inspection, which means time.  This was a local bike, I could plate the next day, that was a runner, and came with a bunch of spare parts.  Sold.

Cb400F as purchased">

Cb400F as purchased">

Cb400F as purchased">

So it came with a pair of '76 side covers as well.  Nice to have the option, but I'll run the red ones usually.  That's currently a '76 engine as well.  No worries, the original is complete in the bins against the wall.  PO tore it down to repair a cam chain tensioner that he wrecked.  He found a running '76 parts bike the he pulled the motor from to power his ride while he fixed the original motor.

My plan is to finish building the original engine to take stock of parts, then completely tear it down to check PO's work.  In the process I'll fully paint, polish and detail the engine, all while I'm riding the bike. Does it get any better?

Plan is full restoration with just 2 non-stock mods.  Bar end mirrors to finish the cafe racer look and LED gauge lighting ala tweakin.

Priority right now is to fix the carburetion issues (idle sucks) with a full teardown, cleaning and rebuild and fix the out of adjustment clutch.

Congrats on completing your wish list Kap!
Looks like a great starting point for your CB400F.

I found that when I had that many bikes in my garage I never had time to ride them. I hope you don't have the same problem.

CRG makes some pretty sweet bar end mirrors as well. Stay away from the cheap Chinese billet crap on eBay, wont last longer than a week.

I use CRGs on most my bikes, excellent quality and surprisingly good visibility out of small mirrors.

So, one more story before I pull the carbs to clean them (working on my CRF450X at the moment). The bike obviously has an aftermarket exhaust.  Not sure which one, looks sort of 'Macish' but no markings I can see.  Plan is to get a stock set-up on her.

Out riding with some friends last fall to our local vintage bike night.  Decide to leave that scene and go hit a patio for a pint.  As we are pulling out of the parking lot, i'm on the old girl hard.  Truthfully, I'd been wringing the thing's neck since I got it, this was no different.  Just as I go to grab second, there is a bit of a sharp noise and then everything gets loud.  I look in my mirror, briefly, but just keep accelerating.

Well, my good friend Travis was behind my on his Triumph Scrambler.  The sharp noise was likely the baffle hitting the pavement in a shower of sparks before it ricocheted up and almost hit him in the head.  I never bothered going back for the baffle, because no it sounds AWESOME!!

It turns heads wherever I go.  I won't bother replacing it until I attract the attention of the law.

Sounds Great KAP!!!

Similar thing happened to me.
It was the first time out in public after a three year rebuild/customization.
We were on our way to Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts club meeting. My nephew was following me down the freeway on another one of my bikes when the entire muffler came shooting off the header and just missed him. Luckily no one was hurt.
Also luckily it wasn't the stock muffler, I had to fit a Emgo aftermarket shorty because the stock wouldn't work with my aftermarket swing arm.

My bike still got tons of attention at the meet up :-)

Good luck with your carbs!

So, leg is almost 100% and I'm damn near ready to get back to my SOHC's.  Built the house of my dreams over the last year so bikes haven't gotten much love.  Have everything finally moved in.  Now to finish out the garage and organize everything.  Since I won't be doing any work on the 400F until the garage is organized and the main intent for the garage is to house and work on Honda's, I might as well post progress in this thread.

Before I filled it, shiny and new with the epoxy floor my buddies and I applied

So I bought the 1964 bungalow on a big pie lot (35'x100'x120'x150') with the intent of a full gut reno.  Long story short, it was money in my pocket and helped someone else out by selling the original house to a mover and building up fresh from the foundation.  The original is now sitting on a new foundation in another town and I have a brand new house that includes this 1550 ft^2 garage.  The double sink you see is actually the laundry sink from the original home and the little open hatch you see is a wood chute to the basement for the fireplace.

Here is it with almost all of the toys in place

I'd ask you to identify them all but they are already in my signature.

Next time, all of the other stuff I've jammed in the garage that I need to get up off the floor and organized.

That space and collection are awesome! Looking forward to seeing it dialed in. Very interested in the 400F build as well, mine didn't come as nicely as yours. I'm still learning a lot about the smaller four. Also, glad to hear you are healing up well. Please continue. Rick.  :)

So here it is now.

No room to work until I clear up all the clutter.

Not to mention adding 1 more non-Honda to find room for.

Also got the first piece of new kit for the garage.  A nice big tool box to keep everything organized

All for now. Next, getting some stuff off the floor and filling my big, new Costco shelf.
