new help figure out
« on: June 13, 2016, 04:27:32 PM »
im new to these bikes.
tittle says bike is an 1978 cb750, bike had an early model oil tank fitted ok, I bought a oil tank from an 1978 cb750 and doesn't fit!! oil tank is wrong or bike year is wrong?

one pic is with out oil tank, other is with a 1978 tank( was able to attach one screw) nothing else fits

does anyone know how how to tell what year based on the frame?
i didn't see any frame mods, no new welding no shaved brackets...

What is your frame number?  It could be a '76 frame, sold and titled as a '77.

However, I see you have a 17" rear tire which also points towards a '77.

The bike is 40+ years old, who knows what parts have been changed out?!

Why in the world did you remove the VIN plate ???

That could potentially cause big headaches for someone in the future or at the DMV.

The frame is stamped on the other side of the steering head.

Are you certain that tank is for a CB750?

The VIN should be stamped on the left side, not underneath the plate. (edit: Steve beat me to it)
Here is a pic showing the oil tank mounting tabs on a K7 frame. Also, the seat hinges are on the left side of the K7 frame.

Let us have a bigger peek of your whole bike, the gas tank does not look like an early 750 K.

no, gas tank is from a 78 for sure.

on the left i seen the stamp according to the number, its a 76 750K, motor is from a 1978 750k..

what should i do? should i get a frame with matching tittle and swap everything back? or just leave it alone? because right now, tittle matches motor not frame. i ran the vin on the frame, not stolen nor salvage.

Lots of titled Honda CB's are on the engine. Don't worry about it. As Ekpent stated let's see the whole bike. The tank does not look like a 77-7 frame. Also if it's the original red it may be a 76 tank.

Some states use the frame VIN for the title, some use the engine, and some use both. The K8 plate attached to a K6 frame is fraudulent, if the K8 frame VIN is shown on the title. Depending on your state, it might not be an issue, but in some it could result in confiscation and /or criminal charges if the K6 numbers had been ground off the frame.

Just leave it, good looking bike.

Why were you changing the oil tank?

You said you have a 76K frame with a 78K engine. Something was done with your drive chain. 77-78 are different from earlier K's. 77-78 had 630 chains and older had 530. It could be offset counter sprocket or rear hub. Stevo pointed out you have a 17" rear so that's 77-78. Also you have a 77-78 front fender. You said it came with an earlier oil tank and you replaced it with the one pictured that doesn't fit. Here are pics of a 75 K oil tank and frame. If you have a 76K frame this is the tank you need.
And another thing................which size chisel did ya use to drill the rivets out of the VIN tag?????

Im short, and earlier tank seemed bulkier, so i figured if i changed it, i would burn my legs less, but i guess i will have to settle for older style. thanks for the help guys.

Rear fender is an earlier k, front end later. Kind of a mish mash of different parts. Looks pretty good though.

The seat hinge brackets on the frame are not 77/78 K. You have an earlier frame. The VIN plate should match the number stamped on the other side of the neck. Florida uses the number on the frame.

Contact your dmv. They most likely will change over the title to the frame if on engine or engine depending which unit is titled. I did this with my 550.
