Here it is:

Beginning July 1, Paris will begin phasing in new vehicle restrictions to deal with the city's air pollution problem. Cars built before 1997 and motorcycles from before 2000 will be banned.

I was in Paris about two months ago.  More scooters than motorcycles, and hardly ANY vintage bikes about.

My French friends told me that the new ban will restrict older vehicles to certain non-peak hours (evenings and weekends).  This sort of stuff would never fly here.  Could you even imagine it happening in Colorado or Texas!?

they tried to ban all vehicles over 7 years old from all city centres a few years ago but changed there mind at the last minute
the french do have quite a few laws which they don't police , you are supposed to have three large reflective stickers on your helmet but nobody does .
normally bikes are exempt from these laws ,  its a worry that this time they are not . these ideas have a habit of spreading in europe would be a right pain if it
came here ..... we vote to either stay or leave the european union tomorrow so it might not matter !

Sounds like some class-warfare bullsh!t to me.  If you cant afford a vehicle so many years old or newer you're now a criminal.

And I know the smell of bull#$%*, i mean, look at my avatar.

oh come on Kev, how can you be so negative?  8)  just kidding.

If they ban older bikes/cars in Paris, would this include antiques? (like all my bikes?)

Just a little precision. The ban is on Bikes registered before June 2000, and it does not apply at weekends.

How they will enforce it, I have no idea. French registration plates give no indication as to the date of registration. If would have to be based on stop and check. The coppers here really have a lot more to be doing with their time.

The big risk is that some nitwit in Brussels will hear about this and think it a good idea.

I would imagine they could use plate numbers as an indication of date of registration.

Singapore does the same thing, but instead of an outright ban the registration fees for cars over 5 years old increases significantly, then again in another 5 years. It's created a grey market for car sales to Indonesia and Malaysia through Batam and across the bridge. Doubt if it'd do the same in Paris.

I would imagine they could use plate numbers as an indication of date of registration.

No, the plate would have to be checked on the police computer. For a long while in France, each time a vehicle was sold outside of the department it was registered in, a new licence plate had to get issued. For a fee of course. The new plate would have no visible reference to the date of original registration.

In UK and Ireland you can tell at a glance how old a vehicle is from it's plate.

This ban is not something thought up by the government, the office of the mayor of Paris dreamed this up.

One more reason to avoid that socialist hellhole. Between government forcing many (most?) of the well off folks to leave after massive theft, and importing terrorists like it's a fire sale, well... I guess they need to target the poor and middle class next, when they start running out of rich folks.
