Palepainter's 750f project.. Al Fine'

First off, let me thank everyone on here for their passion and willingness to share information.  I have learned a lot by lurking the past few weeks. 

I recently did some painting, tradework for a fellow up in Wyoming in trade for the bike.  I am a custom painter by trade.  You can see my work at http://www.mikelearn.com  I have been in the industry for some time.  Mostly painting and riding Harleys. I presently am riding a custom 99 92c Victory. 

 When the chance to get this bike came up, I jumped on it.  The previous owner rebuilt the carbs and got it running.  The wiring is a mess.  There are a bunch of parts missing from the bike, so I decided to go with a custom build rather than a restoration.  I got a rusty tank with the bike that I converted and sliced into a tail section.  I have yet to build the seating section.  I found a clean tank out of KS that just needed a wash of muriatic acid and a good soda rinse.  I will put a liner in it before it goes to paint. 

I have a few things on order.  I had the clubmans from a previous build.  Not really thrilled with the fit on the bike.  When I say fit, I mean how I fit on it.   :)  I have a set of clip ons that I will try above the top tree with the tubes pushed up a few inches.  I am also going with 1.5 in shorter shocks.  Not sure on rear sets just yet.  Fairing is up in the air as well.  Not sure, but I do like the way they look on certain bikes. 

Anyways, I will post progress as it comes along.

I am not sure why you'd want to use shorter shocks, and a 1.5" shorter shock will detrimentally affect handling.  To the contrary, if you want the bike to handle better than stock, slightly longer rear shocks are recommended.  How tall are you?  Unless you are EXTREMELY short, I would not swap in short shocks.

Pushing the fork tubes through the trees will also affect handling.  It would probably recommend going with a 1" over fork tube if you are going to push the tubes an inch through the top tree as a mount point for clip-ons. 

I am quite familiar with Doctor D's CB750SS build as my Nine Live's bike shared some build characteristics with it, too, and I've spent MANY hours talking to the guys who built that bike.

If I may ask, raising the rear is going to affect the rake and trail as much as lowering the front end to the same advantage that you mention.  If you could clarify the difference, that would be great. Oh, and I am enjoying the builds in your link. Especially the Mongrel.

If you commensurately lower both the front and rear, you can preserve stock geometry.  The negative aspect with lowering the rear is that you decrease ride quality and suspension travel. 

My point was to warn that such modifications can affect trail and rake and you should be wary of simply doing them for aesthetic purposes, since these mods can have functional consequences. 

It sounds like you are taking these issues into consideration.  Just be wary of rear clearance issues.

Nice work on the part of your website that I saw.. I think you will get on to this quickly. The 750 is a very easy bike to work on.

There is/was a guy north of Denver south of you that has/had a bunch of CB750 stuff. 102nd St?? Name is Uriah, all I know. I picked up a NOS set of 75/76 CB750F side covers from him a few years back. May be helpful for you.

This evening I started messing with the gauges, warning lights, and switch.  I am using a bar clamp from a 75.  I am using the stock gauge mount, but modding the position and hardware so I can just run the Tach on center.  Got the gauge trim straightened out then applied primer.


  Then I started messing around fabbing up a fairing from the left over tank section.  I may pull a mold off of it after I get it all fabbed in steel.  We will see, not sold on it yet.  It is a long way to go yet.  Need to French in headlight tunnel and mounts.   But wanted to mock it up roughly to make an evaluation.  The headlight came from a French Citroen I believe. I need to hit the hardware store as soon as a few items get here.

Reminds me of the fairing on the front of this Jeff Decker sculpture I saw at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum this summer.

Yes, thank you Budman.  You are exactly right.  I remember seeing something of the sort somewhere.  The fairing still has a ways to go. But think will maintain the continuity of lines through the bike.  How aerodynamic will it be is yet to be seen.   :)

 I think the long flat portions are making it hard to work with.

 Most fairings are very rounded in the light area.. Take a look at Z1R fairing,. And Suzuki Wes Cooley fairing. For some non conventional input.

Thanks for the input on the fairing.  I will get to do more work on it this weekend, it should make more sense then.  I see it in my head, just need to bust out the welder and English wheel a bit. 

Tonight, I reworked the gauge bracket and mounted the tach and ignition.  I will do some clean up on it after I see what else it may need.  Mounted the headlight with the aftermarket brackets.

I worked on the fairing a bit more today.  Made return lip in order to move the head light back into fairing.  Waiting on the clip ons to get here before I decide on how I am going to work the sides of fairing.  I will do a bit of computer mock up of the weekend if I get a chance to get back on it.

Swipe the fairing off the blue bike, with the beefy triple tree on it.
The older key switches 73-76 are much smaller, not sure if the end plug is a direct swap.

HA.  No thanks.  The Victory stays as it is.   :)  But it is a cool piece.  I will look into the switches.  Thanks for the info.

I admire your ingenuity but the fairing appears to lack aerodynamic efficiency. It begs to have a better air flow.
