CB 550/650 Daily
« on: February 09, 2017, 11:42:22 PM »
Hey guys.
While work continues slowly on my Cb592 racer build, I thought id share some updates and upgrades to my 550 daily. While wrapping up my ladies "Gentlemens Express" build with sinister, I picked up a beautiful 76 cb550 for myself. This bike was really meant to be left alone, but come on who are we kidding.

Inspecting and cleaning with son #1

PO had everything there except the paint color. So some of this:

Gets us this:

After enjoying the bike for most of the summer and eating the ladies dust, it was time for some upgrades.
The goal of this project is to keep reliability, 70s style, and as much period correctness as possible. While some modern upgrades will happen, those will be as un seen as possible. So i quick call and a short last ride brought me to my buddies Dave at Broken Sprocket Garage. We quickly got to work and i needed a ride home.

Nils doing his thing

19f/18r Lesters

Godffreys dual disc

Forks were rebuilt with Race tech emulators and springs, and polished the lowers.

cleaned up and rebuilt the swing arm

Everybody is doing 650 motor swaps so add me to the club

This 79 cb650 motor has 8000 original miles. Covers are currently getting a "touch of Nils"

Which all brings us here.

Ikon rear shocks courtesy of Nils

All parts are ordered and on the way.  Upgrades will include C5 ignition, full Motogadget system, new charging system, Hindle header, cone engineering muffler, 78 cb750 carbs, cognito airbox, led lighting, cb650 tach and speedo, period controls with larger bore for the dual disc, and a few things im sure i missed.
Ready for spring.

Since those stock 4-4 pipes are no longer needed, I will gladly give them a home!

It's a tasteful looking bike. Only thing I'd question is why stay with stock gauges? The reason I ask is not to say that stock clocks are good/beautiful, but doesn't the Lester swap make for a speedo gear issue? Or have you resolved that? Besides, for as clean as the bike is, why have the cable hanging down and looking "floppy"?

I use the stock clocks on my blue 550 with Lesters.  You just need to modify the speedo plate for the dual disc set up.

The brake kit came with the speedo drive already modified for the dual disc. But I'll double check to see if all is well.

Not yet Dave. I'll probably just ride this around all spring summer and fall. Then next winter upgrade the top end. Main goal here is a rideable, reliable, bike to ride.
Currently getting my engine build fix with a cb592 11.5-1 cr , mike Reick stage 4 head, megacycle 126-20 etc etc.

Thanks brother! And good eye. That's the motolanna front fender, from flea bay. Modifying the rear fender though.

Are they making a direct replacement bracket now for CB's? Or will it need to be modified? I assume it will need to be modified regardless for the dual discs.

Looks great!

Nevermind.... found my answer. It appears they have 3 different options for SOHC's now.

I may have to purchase one of their "shorty's." Looks good!

Looks like the Goddfery dual disc kit.  Countersunk rotor mount holes so you can re-use the stock bolts; lightened, thinned and drilled rotors.  Great stuff.

The paint came out nice, too.

Well after reading through all of Daves amazing cb650 build thread, I couldn't resist.
Pulled the trigger on some go fast parts and boom Christmas in February!
Head is getting the Mike Rieck "touch of excellence", so motor can be buttoned up in a few short weeks.

674 kit, c5 ignition, Yoshi 122-00 cam, Hindle header, cognito airbox (with matching engine case paint), and I think we know what the skittles mean!

Well, so much for a stock bore motor! I guess in for a penny, in for a pound!

Looking forward to seeing this come together.

Wouldn't your comparison be more valid if the head work and cam was the same across all of the comparative test units?  Having different cams and exhausts will impact the performance potential. The carbs kind of tie into the solutions to a certain extent don't you think?  The Gentlemen's Express using those recommended within that document...
Ignition systems shouldn't make a huge difference, unless you believe the hype. Only way to prove it makes a difference is dyno with one system and then swap in the other in the matter of hours of first testing so environmental changes are not impacting the results as much, right?

So, fresh plugs and all using the same fuel.  If it is going to compare things then it really needs to do the job to reduce a few things that could skew results, right?

But, what do I know.

A more interesting comparison to me would be the comparison of the GE motor with perhaps Flatlander's. I think they are pretty similar... Aren't they pretty much:
59mm pistons
Stage "2+" heads
stock carbs
126-00/650 type cam

I think Flatlander has +1mm intakes though- I seem to recall he got 60+ at the dyno?

Even a simple ignition change can make a difference, 4hp in my case. No other change except ignition. Probably not that the new one made any more power, but that the model being replaced wasn't up to snuff.

Wow Brent, didn't realize that would be a huge factor.  In race apps like your bike you are probably at higher rpms than most riders would do and it is capable of higher revs due to nice blueprinting and balancing, and porting to crank out the numbers and perf of your bike.
I can see how a system could run out of steam unable to keep up or build sufficient spark or consistent spark to achieve the higher performance.  Just never thought about it...
