How to remove points advancer
« on: May 19, 2018, 04:02:53 PM »
Hello,

I've been searching all day for a step by step on how to remove the points advancer on a 73' CB350F and can't find anything. I'm trying to access the back of the housing to clean up some oil and put some sealant since I've been told I would have to split the case to replace the seal behind it. I see the plate is held by 3 screws but it doesn't come off the crank after that. Not sure what's next. Any help is appreciated.

You need to spin off the 10mm head located in the 23mm  nut. Larry

Ok that helps. Do I need to hold the 22mm nut while spinning off the 10mm one?

the compression should hold it,even on a reverse spin,or just hold it anyway, never ever crank that big nut to turn the motor with the spark plugs in,even with them removed do it easy, youll see why once the nut is off,it only engages two little lugs.

Unless you have an air or battery impact you will need to hold that large nut

you can knock those 10mm head bolts undone easy,an impact is way overkill they aint wheel nuts.

I use the 18v impact Dave, it lets me spin it off without having to hold the large nut. Variable power...Larry

I got it. Thanks for the response. Wait, why would you not turn the motor with spark plugs in at the special nut? When I read the manual to do the tappet adjustment it doesn't mention pulling out the spark plugs.

Now that you have the advancer removed the answer should be obvious. Look at how skinny that advancer shaft is. Having to apply twisting force to overcome cylinder compression is a lot of stress on that skinny shaft. They are prone to twisting, breaking, or even shearing the tangs off of the end of the advancer mechanism. Besides, static timing is much easier to set when you are not fighting engine compression as well. Engine turns very smoothly and easily with the plugs removed without the risk of damage to the advancer shaft. ;)
