I sent out my 750 tank to have Steve clean and line it. It turned out great and he had great communication. That's where I'd take my bike if I didn't feel confident doing it myself.

Well at 160K they guy was probably tossing in a little fork oil or ATF to keep the seals and tower plugs soft.
No, he wasn't. :P My top end was last apart in 1979, and the seals and cam tower pucks don't leak. ;)

Back in the day, CB750s didn't leak that much. What got em was sitting in traffic. get em hot and the rubber gets hard and shrinks.  The smaller 4s seemed to leak more.  Some of it was like do to them being ruin harder.  The camshaft feed location also had something to do with it. Knew a couple guys with over 100K on their 750s.

The immediate work would have to be what's pictured below and the two exhaust pipes that are turning to swiss cheese.
I'm not sure what it would cost to change that seal, but what time would it take?  How involved would the work be?  I feel confident in doing the work with time and patience, but one of those is precisely what I don't have.

Is that exhaust soot on the cylinders? If so, replacing exhaust pipes and exhaust gaskets is pretty straightforward.

I don't think it's exhaust soot but rather a seal.  Do these pictures help?

Oh yeah, that definitely looks like oil. I would probably want to address that if it were mine. Minor weeping can be cleaned off after each ride but that looks like it might be hard to keep ahead of. Have you cleaned it to see how long it takes for the leak to spread/accumulate?

I haven't cleaned it since last year so once I get the brakes back on it I'll give it a good wash and see what's up.

Another twist to this plot, though.  The wife said I should just buy a new exhaust and then slowly work on the bike.  I informed her what reproduction 4 into 4s cost and she didn't mind.   ::)

I contacted Hoy via his website and I'll let you all know what comes of that (thanks for passing along his information).
