Stylish, but it seems like a bad idea to have the intakes sucking in all that super-hot air.

I think it's whatever trend is trendy.  They'll be right side up for a few years, then up side down...

+1 on the intakes only getting hot air.  Not to mention that the pipes virtually wrap around the barrel, not much 'air cooling' happening there. ;)

Because only a few inches of the tube is exposed (read unsupported), they are much stiffer, with little or no sticksion.  Produces more responsive handling, and better ride / wheel control.

That was the hope. Also, by putting the larger diameter piece in the clamps above, a stiffness gain was expected.

In practice these benefits were offset by an overall weight gain, (see how the top parts which were the bottom, are so much bigger in the top postion than when they are in the bottom positon.

I'll be able to tell you exactly the weight differences are shortly.  I've got a 550 front end, and 1 caliper (weight x2 ;)), complete CBX 500 with brakes (&TRAC), and a 09 CBX 600R complete front end coming. ;) :)

I remember this one I think. Mostly because of the engraving. That frame and swingarm are killing me.

It's a '76 - '78 CB550 created by Bryan Fuller (host of the tv show Two Guys Garage).  He had it on the show once showing how to fiddle with the carbs on these old bikes.  Besides hosting the tv show, he has his own hotrod shop in Atlanta (http://www.fullerhotrods.com/pages/index.aspx).

Anyway, watch the video... http://www.twoguysgarage.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=102:episode-90-cafe-racer-gets-jets&catid=39:season-9&Itemid=77

To be honest, what we call upside down is not quite correct. Upside down forks are older than me and I'm not quite sure when they first came out, could be that they were out before down side up ones, which would make the down side up ones, upside down ones. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yep, that's my buddy Fuller.   He has a really nice 69 and another 550 as well.   He has me to blame for his new found addiction to CBs.

His shop is in Atlanta - http://www.fullerhotrods.com/pages/index.aspx

If you look closely, that's me (red shirt) with my head turned, sitting in the doorway of the trailer with a whiskey drink in my hand.   We even got to take a lap
around the track at the Barber Vintage festival this year (that's where the photo was taken)

That bike is an ongoing project - should be done by Sturgis this year.    It does run and it's a fun little bike.   He made the frame, tank - pretty much everything
except for the engraving.   I think he's even working on another tank for it - that kid is never satisfied.

Just an example of his addiction/talents - the exhaust collars are handmade stainless.   He's got skills and a good eye.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Yup..that Fulller bike is pretty cool..

And downside-up forks are not new, except they work better now.. In the early 50s some Brits used them, the small FrannyB, Enfield, Villiers, James, or Bantam used them..

Frank, my first comp bike was a D.O.T. they were fitted with USD forks from 1950 to 1956 when they changed to their own leading link forks.
Villiers was not a motorcycle, they made engines for many manufacturers plus the ones you named apart from BSA.

WOW! I love that bike. the tank and seat are so cool how they are not just flat but have detail to them. And that swingarm and monoshock are great, makes me feel like $hit on my build, but i do feel a little better knowing that he has a lot more money, resources, skills then i do.

And shame on you greenjeans if you have never posted that before.

This is very cool, but I still think Randy Mamola smoking both ends in a wild drift is even cooler though.  ;) Surely everyone remembers that.

I only wish I could get an SOHC4 front end to work like that R1.  ;D
