I'm confused as to what a 1%er is. AMA has one description and the Outlaws and other Harley only clubs have another. I think the 1%er that I've read about in true crime autobiographies, and undercover books are today few and far between. If you go to church on Sunday, have 2 life insurances, call your wife "bunny", pay your taxes, and if you donate to toys for tots at Christmas, then by God, you are not an Outlaw, as defined by the AMA a hundred years ago.
Now, I understand that the meaning of 1%er has been tweaked and maybe, "softened up" over the years, as bikers from that era matured but still rode almost daily and still did not want to be considered a 99%er. For example, my boss, the owner of a multi-million dollar company was a hell raiser in his day. So much so that he had to leave the country for a year and a half due to his affiliation and membership of a 1%er MC (that I need not mention). At the ripe age of 63, he has his company, 3 boats and a retirement plan that would make most people sick. He is currently a Senior Road Captain and Board Member for Harley Owners Group (HOG). While still rides Harleys and has more outlaw stories than you could listen to in one day, he understands he is no longer  the bad ass he used to be, therefor not being a true 1%er.
I can say, at 26 years old, with a hefty PM title at my job, a mortgage, a wife, and 3 little girls, I would have never made it in to any 1%er club 40 or 50 years ago. I would have never had the time! Aside from all the 1%er confusion, I'm for anything on two wheels No matter what make, style, or engine. It's all good in my hood. :D - Javier

P.S. This post was not meant to offend any member or the anybody, as I understand my interpretation of a 1%er might and obviously differs from alot of other people's.

Well... Ichi,

I'm not sure what or who your "sitting @ the keyboard and fabricating this stuff" reference is directed towards. Is there a single statement made by me that is factually inaccurate?

Regardless, I agree with your opinion this romanticism created around the 'out law' lifestyle and the social elitism is in the least pathetic and at the most dangerous- as in your experience. But being a youngster at 42 yr. old... what could my life experience possibly be?!

And you're right; the comments made were about styles more so than attitudes. But are the two so completely unrelated? BTW: My uncle (who is a few years your senior) was a biker in the olden days and I don't think he knifed anyone. I could be wrong though.

In my opinion the only people who should be wearing leather chaps and vest are the guy from The Village People and strippers. ;)

-Pretty Boy Bill/ Toe Cutters MCC

Encosse..anyone else that wondered if I was referring to anyone in particular with my last post here..I wasn't. If anything..I was including myself in that generalization about sitting @ the keyboard.

Probably was doing too much of it myself last night.  Didn't get off til 5:00 a.m..waay too late for me!  Also felt in retrospect..I shouldn't be rattling on about my personal foibles so much.  Really did love my Square Four though!  Sold it to raise money to get married..the first time.  SOHC 4 Honda's were the next step in engineering, technology I believe.

Nowadays I probably spend too much time reminiscing..not enough riding.  Getting ready to fix that shortly here.  After 30+ years in Colorado..I still miss being able to ride pretty much whenever you want.  Won't go out on roads here from about November through April because 1.) I'm a lot older / more cautious  2.) the roads just aren't suitable to ride on during that period I feel.

You see..I'm mainly a street, road rider..always have been.  Off road's okay..I just never got very proficient @ it.  As some of my contemporaries say sometime "we're too old to be rolling around on the ground anymore"  I tend to agree.

Really don't have the desire..or interest to discuss the 1% issue much more.  Was never much interested in it..had a few negative experiences that completely turned me off to it..which as mentioned before.."evolved" into much more civilized interest in motorcycles, related activities.  I love wrenching..riding these old Honda's and talking with you guys (and gals) on these forums.

Ichi,

No harm done man. I respect your experiences good and bad; I may get my dander up but I still listen.

And we're just having fun with the name generator. As for those who dig the Harley, leather, skulls, etc...
I kid, but it all comes down to what floats your boat and to hell with what the bald guy (me) on the red Honda thinks. Just try waving back once in a while OK?

You can always tell which ones have bought into the myth. They are fully leathered with logos everywhere and if you pass by them on an old 750 they never wave back at you. They never ride anything more than 2 years old, heaven forbid they should ever have to fix an Ironhead on the side of the road. If you pull into a gas station they look at you long enough to determine what you are riding and then pretend you don't exist. Right about then I pretend to be listening to my MP3 player and start singing War Pigs as loud as I can just to get them to look. ;D

Can anyone tell me which T.V show set the trend for wearing the bandana over the fore head?  All of the sudden I started seeing more and more dudes trying to pull that one off, and how about riding around with you clutch hand on your lap while looking around to see who is watching, that looks like it would be a lot of fun when big pot hole jumps out in front of you.

Whiffy,

Heyyy I do that hand on lap thing! Mostly when slowly riding past the college girls in a gear too low for the speed I'm going. Must be careful though; here in MA our pot hole money is siphoned off to feed the Kennedy Yacht Fund.

Don't know about wearing a snot rag on my head though.

I used to see Jesse James doing that on his TV show a lot, wearing the do-rag really low over his eyebrows, but haven't seen him on the tube for a while now.  Maybe they come with instructions now on how to look like a bad-ass, or something. ;D

The clutch hand thing i think is something we all do at one point or another..with the older bikes i could see the reasoning...relaxing your hand after having it on the clutch for the duration of a long ride for example..or to be able to open and close it a few times to work the circulation back into the hand.
