lotsa pages so far, so i may have missed it...

is that the back side of the house?

looks great, interesting rafter construction... was it to save some dough or to save some space for overhead storage?

I call it the back of the house, even though it is the road side. We are water front so I call this the front........
I assure you nothing about this roof line was to save $$. Just handed a carpenter another $800.00 and it is very slow going.

not sure if this was mentioned earlier or not, and it's easier to just ask  ::) , how many square feet are you going to have total? . i'm building a small shop building for myself this fall/winter as the 8x10 workspace i have is ridiculous with a 33 gal compressor, 4 toolboxes and bike lift and welder. i'm doing a 12x20 with a 10 foot ceiling out back.

if in bc the winters get as cold and long as in alberta,i would say:woodstove..
do you have natural gas to your place??then one of those infra red heaters would work nice..
on propane i'm not sure,i asume you mean propane bottle heater...

i have one of those  big torpedo heaters that runs on either diesel or kerosene.

works like a champ for my purposes , but i think .. you've already delved this far into the mancave endever , you should go all out and pipe natural gas to it (if you have that ability, codes and all) and get one of those industrial jobs that hangs in the ceiling

if not they make torpedo heats big enough for that space

I would recommend keeping an eye out for a used Oil furnace. I see them all the time in my area as people are moving away from oil and converting  to natural gas. Most times it is the tanks that are in rough shape and the furnace themselves are fine. I have seen a few go fo for free (just come and pick it up since they don't want to pay for disposal). The only cost is getting a hundred gallon tank and even some of them you will see for free too...as long as they didn.t have to get cut to get them out of the house.

you live a bit south of texas, right?  not too cold down there i would assume but since you're near the water it might be a bit nippier on occasion, i would think.

i have one like this dual burner model...
http://www.masterheaters.com/lptt/tt30.html

if i had insulation in the garage it would do wonders... instead, i just work next to it.   ;D  puts out some serious heat if you want it too.  each burner has 3 settings and you could simply run only one burner if thats all you needed.  the portability is a bonus.  got mine for 80 bucks last winter at home depot.

1st I'm on the West Coast of Canada.

I had considered a wood stove, but just want to turn a switch when I'm in there.
I have been looking at this type of heater.

Apparently quite a while, and I would have a larger tank installed outside to feed a couple of them.

No natural gas or oil on the Island ;D  Not enough power left in my feeder from the house for elect :P

Well Derek,If you don't want to burn wood and have no access to natural gas....looks like propane is the way to go. I was around those torpedo lookin' units in Wyoming a few years back. They warm a shop up real good but they go through the propane pretty quick. I wouldn't recommend the used oil heater because you have to have alot of straight motor oil in it (no mix with other discarded fluids). They have to be cleaned out a couple of times a year and they are a messy bee-atch to clean. If it were me, I would put a wood stove in AND run propane heaters. Unless you have laws up there that won't allow both??

A buddy of mine has one of those WOOSH torpedo heaters as well, and I know what you mean by "they go through the fuel quick".

The walls on the garage are 2 x 6 the roof rafters are 2 x 12s so with that much insulation I hope the propane units will do the trick pretty quick without a lot of vapors.  Could also put in 1 base board heater in by the work bench to keep the snap of cold out.

Can always refit a wood stove up later as well.  ;D

Thanks for your comments guys.

I agree with the dual heater idea. That way if you run out of propane or wood...you can still keep goin with the other heater!

I have one of those kerosene flamethrower jobs - it takes the chill off while the wood stove gets going.  :)
