Everything ( nearly ) in a box and a box for everything

I did this not long ago, but working on the K6 has undone a lot! The bike has spilt all over one end of the shop and a lot of boxes are open and around, looking for the right bit……

Spotty…… Well done. It’s a lot of work but feels good. I have to ask; “Let it Bleed”??

the brake bleeder.....

quite a few have music references in the labels, theres also pop, pop, pop muzik ( pop riveter ) wire brush and dettol ( wire brushes for the drill ) which is a reference to a billy connolly joke
cable ties ( self explanatory ) bur also a local punk band and one has arthur on one end and phil on the other ( angle grinders ) and is dedicated to an old punk band from melbourne called the corpse grinders

Here is my bin wall. I ran out of space so I added those plastic containers above. Yes, they are from antacid.  Getting old has side benefits 😀

Than I went 3D and started screwing them to rafters.  That's where it stands now. There are still empties up there.

I have a heater for the shop.  One of those gas cannons.  It heats it up nicely and fast.

I have a plastic bin shelf that runs the full length of my shop. The bins are cut open windshield washer antifreeze and DEF fluid containers. They hold everything from paint brushes to oil filters. I like the “3D” storage, that maybe next.

My shop is lit by ancient F96 T12 single pin, 8’ fluorescent lights (twin tubes per fixture). Today I ordered a few sets of 8’ LED lamps to sub in. The ballast gets removed and the fixture gets rewired to feed the 120v directly into both ends of the LED lamp. I plan to convert the two lamps directly above my work area. Anybody tried this solution? Will report in.

I know the LEDs must be a Big improvement when it's cold ambient temperature;it takes a while for the Fluorescent lights(ballasts?)to warm up before they give good light.

As the tubes and ballasts age there is a significant reduction in total lighting output. The fixture that got my last ballast and pair of new tubes a few days ago is visibly brighter than anything else in the shop. The cost of a ballast and two bulbs is more than these LED replacements, so I thought I’d try a few. If they provide decent lighting and last as long as promised, they should be OK.

The LEDs will be a vast improvement over the old lights.
I have worked at a Trike shop in San Diego that he changed over to the 8' tube LEDs one or 2 at a time as he had time to do and the difference was very noticeable.
I have a bunch of 4' double tube LED Shop lights in my dungeon cave shop and they make it daylight instantly on when I flip the switch.

I have two rows of five 8' fixtures too. I'm just waiting for your report on how well it works. 8)
Mine are from the early 80's. Just been waiting for the price of the 8' LED tubes to get reasonable.

Kelly….. They just arrived and look pretty neat! Wiring is straight forward. Pull the ballasts and simply wired 120V directly. Line to one end and neutral to the opposite! I’ll get them in tomorrow and let you know. These cost a bit more, they have two full rows of LED buttons down the entire length. Not cheap, but less than the cost of a new ballast and two regular lamps. One of mine is dead so a good test. Will report.

I think I got those for my sawmill shed.  Costco had them on sale while back.

Am I the only one that dislikes led lighting?  I find it harsh, glaring, and it just makes everything look antiseptic and one dimensional.  The worst part is the glare.  Wear glasses? Any dirt, smudge, moisture, scratches on your lenses and you can't see #$%* and its really unlikely that I am going to ever be completely free of that kind of stuff on my glasses.  I have a better result with virtually any other kind of lighting.

if you buy the more expensive ones there is a choice of colours . the ones described as natural tend to be better. the cheap ones can be like you are on the set of close encounters !

Kelly…….I wired in the two 8’ fixtures (2 X 8’ lamps each) over the end of my shop that’s my real work area. All I can say is “double wow”. They come on instantly and it’s like an operating room in that end. The lighting arrangement is consistent from one end of the shop to the other but the difference is VERY obvious. I love it!

I did have to add a support in the centre of the fixture. The lamps are so long and light weight that they “sagged” a bit in the middle. They probably would have been fine, but it bugged me. Made up a small hook that fastens on the centre screw for the metal cover and looped a zip tie loosely around everything. Based on the promises printed in the instructions, these will last a lot longer than me! Great.

These seem OK to me. They are single pin bulbs so I actually rotated them so the light is slightly splayed out to the sides and not massively concentrated down the centre line of the fixture.

Thanks for the report. They sound like they'll work out fine. As far as the harsh lighting I think it is less of a problem in my shop with the 12' 6" ceiling height. I'll be trying this soon.

Good luck! You be pleased. I went down there today, just for a few minutes and it’s great.
