Carb drip-leak DANGER!
« on: July 24, 2012, 07:37:52 PM »
Hi guys!

Was just reading a couple of threads where guys mentioned having some fuel leaking or dripping out of carb throats into airbox. Wanted to post this warning: A buddy had a Honda 4 that was dripping fuel out of 1 or 2 carbs into airbox and he always meant to get around to fixing it some day soon. Turned out he didn't have to fix it at all!

He started it one day and it backfired into wet fuel in airbox and the rest is history, MAJOR damage from the fire!

If your carbs are dripping into airbox or filter or anywhere, I suggest you get on it ASAP to fix the problem 'cause I'd sure hate to read about another Honda barbecue here...

I was riding in with my friend in an 80s something Mustang. It was a hot 100 degree plus California day. Were going down the road when we hear a loud pop and a burst of hot air shot out of the boot around the shifter. A second later flames were shooting out from the hood.

We had just enough time to pull over and get out before the whole front of the car was in flames.

Funny, we smelled gas before it happened. Guess it was gas :) He had done something with the fuel lines and it leaked onto the manifold. Got hot enough and bam!

That was the first Mustang he killed. He went on to destroy two more after that.

Wow, glad you got out in time! Sounds like you might want to keep that friendship at phone's length for your own safety, or a least draw the line at Mustangs...

Yes, a fuel leak from any engine can be dangerous.  Something similar happened a number of years ago after my son had been working on his Monte Carlo...
