Prepped and painted my headlight bracket for a 1975 F0. Total cost $1.00

     Nothing but the best over here Larry.  Still using up my garage sale box buyout of Rustoleum and other paints. Even got a can of 'chrome' in the box.

Balanced my rear wheel. Was able to remove one of the big weights that was on there from the previous tire. In the process I definitely heard some SLOPPY/CRUNCHY bearings... ordering replacements soon, as well as steering stem bearings.

Lubed the chain.

Also tightened my swingarm bolt to 50ft-lbs. It was LOOSE. That might explain why my chain was going slack often, too... I've got new bushings on tap from Kenosha_Kid.

After riding in the rain from a VJMC event and then having the clutch cable break a few miles from home I finally got to lube the hastily installed replacement cable.

Also cleaned & re-lubed the drive chain, then took up a little chain slack with about 1/4 turn on each jack bolt.

I also did a couple of hours cleaning the entire machine, including using some brake cleaner to remove the inevitable oil & dust collected below the cylinder head.

Nice relaxing evening it was.

My K5 finally developed the tach drive seal leak issue.  I was amazed at how much oil leaked.  Since my budget is extremely fixed, I use my bike as a daily rider and I am a cheap bastard I wanted to wait until I saved up enough for a bulk order of several items from DSS.  I noted the seal size was 4.8 x 14.5 so as a TEMPORARY fix I cut a washer out of tire patch rubber 3/16 x 1/2 with hollow punches, cleaned the face of the existing seal, applied a small amount of rubber cement and pressed the homemade washer against the face of the old seal.  I then slid a 4.8 ID oring over the tach drive shaft and reinstalled the cable.  Three days riding and no leaks.  Not a "purist" fix but not bad Hillbilly engineering to keep you riding and your engine clean TEMPORARILY!

I don't run an original tach any more, but I am using the end of the tach cable as a plug (packed with JB Weld and shortened). I wrapped the end a few times with PTFE tape just to ensure perfect seal, as mine was leaking before, too. Turn it in the same way you wrap the tape so it doesn't come unraveled!

My local Honda dealer does not even want to look up parts on these old bikes even if you give them the part number much less offer to order it for you.  If your not buying a new bike, getting a 200 buck oil change or a 300 dollar tire they make it clear your wasting their time.  Winston Salem and Charlotte both have the seal in stock but it is not worth the drive to go pick it up so I will wait till I order multiple items and save on the shipping and gas.

+1 that's exactly my experience too with the only honda dealer here in Canberra Australia, which is a newfangled motorcycle super store that also sells all the new non japanese budget brands. I ride further and pay a little more for my parts by ordering them from the suzuki dealer in Queanbyan- then they have to deal with the unhelpful bastards!!

Luckily my local Honda dealer goes under the name of Cyclepartsnation on the internet so I can order from home and just walk in and pick the stuff up. About a mile from my shop, But unlike you fellas these are a bunch of very helpful folks behind the counter. Have known most for many years. One guy rooted around for 1/2 hour once through a bunch of stuff and dug me out a pair of NOS 1975 Kaw 900 Z1B keys that matched my ignition.

Local shop here has the same bike displayed along with a CBX,  by and large the shop is helpful and friendly.............and not all that over priced.  The younger guys(all compared to me) seem to enjoy hearing some of my stories about shop life back in the 70s-80s..Larry

Did a 500 mile loop up here in NW Colorado.  Went from Craig to Grand Junction and visited the new grandkid.  Next a.m headed south to Delta and then east through Crawford and Paonia.   Backtracked to Cedar ridge and then up and over the the Grand Mesa.  Still snow on the ground up there and some of the lakes are still iced over.  Dropped down the other side and hit I-70 at Debeque and then back north to Craig.  Fun ride!  The old bike did good.

sounds too good to be true- but I have plenty of grease so I'll definately try packing some in where the tacho cable attaches to the tacho drive and see if it makes any difference to the oil leak there..

Has anyone else tried this?

Removed the crankshaft oil seal and drove in a generic, no-lip one on my 750 because I had put it in backwards and it started leaking badly. Posting this in hopes it can stop someone else from doing this. Metal ring in! This is wrong...

repaired my 77 matic after a small electrical fire under the left side cover.sure am glad i never throw out stuff as i had everything in the junk wiring milk crate

Now that sounds like a better idea- sold!  -what if the leak it between the tacho drive and the engine though?

I'm talking about the end of the cable that attaches to the engine.

I cut the end off a cable to make a plug since I use an electronic tach.

My bike wouldn't start yesterday.... OH NO A GREMLIN!!!


Took my tank off, started jiggling wires... IT CAME BACK ON. WOOHOO! Got me home...

Inspection (further jiggling of wires) this morning before big Ride for Dad event (you can still donate here) found that the switched power wire for my electronic speedo had come a bit loose! Fuxed her up good, and threw some electrical tape on there for good measure, too. All working fine now!

actually something I did nearly a year ago- scored a set of used oem carb boot clamps and popped them into a jar of fuel/kero mix, covered it and left them to soak for a while....
Today I finally pulled them out and to my dismay some of the fuel has devolved into a thick white powder crust all over the clamps arrrrrgh the opposite of the intended effect!
