1977 cb750f2 (915cc)
« on: April 10, 2010, 07:42:08 AM »
MLK day was a Holiday so I day tripped from Seattle to Eugene OR to pick up my next project.

"Secret ninja"   1977 cb750F2  The bike looked pretty good from a distance, but it had some serious rust that was covered up (pretty good) by spray bomb.  I hate it when PO's do this to sell a bike.

After the first day on the bike;

Trashed parts / The exhaust was taken out of the trash....

I wanted to get the motor out asap because I want to tear it down first to were I am at.

Finally got some more wrenching time in.  here is the case with the broken cylinder studs (what a #$%*).  Took it to a machine shop but they had no luck.  Luckily I c=have a spare case for the build.

The second set of cases are getting media blasted.  The internals looked pretty good considering how the outside of the engine looked.

New CAD plating system (www.caswellplating.com) works great to refinish old metal bits.  I am re plating and polishing all the fasteners and small pieces.

The engine is getting:
New HD studs
New cam
New camchain
New rings
Hone
New high flow valves
New valve springs and retainers
New valve guides
mild port/ polish
Barnett Clutch

I also plan on installing the Gordon frame kit once it arrives so I will be able to work on the motor in the future ( big bore?) if I decide to.

This "new project" of yours is the exact bike I need if I ever buy another.  The lines are just perfect, it comes with mags, and the rear disc brake.

Really crappy deal with the head studs.....glad to hear you had a spare case available.  Will you be painting the motor back to black?

I sure hope you will powder the frame. (Gloss black???)

Have you seen the Yellow one on here that was a BOTM?  Absolutely beautfiul, and could be inspiration for you!

The lines on this bike, with a 1/2 fairing and some clubmans or clip on's would be KILLER.

I'll be watching this build with great interest!

The motor will be a mix of black and silver (silver case with gloss black powdered covers).  The frame and most of the bike will be gloss black, with the tins painted Porsch dark metallic grey.

My harley is pretty blacked out and my 400t has some color.

The yellow 750f is beautiful, I am digging alot of things about that bike.

Sweet dude, we'll be twinners! Let me know if you need a second pair of hands for whatever. I'm only 30 minutes away. Working on an F2 is right up there on my list of things I would rather be doing.

Put some time in today on the 750.  Began working on the engine with the heads.  Putting in some new highflow valves, guides, hd springs and retainers.  I also dod some mild clean up of the chambers.

Tomorrow I will finish this up and start on the "Gordon frame kit"

Gordon frame kit is installed and tach welded into place, until I can get it finish welded.  Next off to powdercoat.

I also got my tires mounted, rotors on and front forks rebuilt with Progressive springs.

Name changed to "secret ninja"

The name change is because I was getting bored working on the bike until I heard a song from my past of racing bikes.

Engine is coming along pretty smooth.  so far...

All new bearings
Barnett clutch and  heavy duty springs
Tsubaki HD cam chain
Dyna ignition
powdercoated covers
polished SS bolts and re-plated NOS bolts

NOS pistons and rings

Powdercoated comstars with drilled rotors wrapped in new avons.

This weekend I hope to get the engine all finished up.  The frame and some other small bits are off at powdercoat.  Joe Knapp (powder Pro) is doing the powdercoat on my brake calipers, hope to get that bake soon.

I could not fight the temptation to add a big bore kit to this build.

Now I just need to find a reputable place to bore my jugs.

Awesome so far. Keep it up.

Wishing I had time / motivation to work quickly and effectively on my build...ah well I'll get there eventually.
Eventually I'll get something that runs, but until then I'll wrench until I make it run.

Thanks HN. Your frame kit will already pay for itself since the 836 kit is on back order.  With your kit installed I can move forward with the build and install the engine in pieces.

The tires are Avon Roadrunners.

That's great news! I'm loving your build...and the frame kit looks great in there!  I have finally installed mine...still have to  do welding though...and I'm looking forward to not having to wiggle that beast of an engine back in there.

Thanks for the tire sizes! I'm going to look into those bad boyz....love it!

Cheers!

I had Joe (JRK) @ PowderPro hook up some of my 750 brake parts and I am impressed.  The parts were in rough shape and he powdercoated the brakes and made them look great.

Today I completely reworked all the brakes today.  Honed out the internals of the brakes and installed all new master cylinders and caliper parts.  Black braided brake lines and SS pistons.

Have to stop...

Not the entire engine but the rebuilt bottom end with HD studs.  Fresh powder on the frame.  I am waiting on my 836 kit to show up from dynoman so I can bore the jugs and instal the top end.

Funny how the cost starts creeping up when you start buying engine stuff, huh? ;D

travler--yep the cost starts to creep up with the engine but what the hell, you only live once and life is short.  I just want to try and do most of this build correct (in my mind) the first time rather than re doing things at a later date.  Since I do all my own labor I can justify doing a lot of the work on the bike until my wife cuts me off.

wannabe--  No frame welds except for the frame kit instal.  all the welds you see are from the moco.
